This scent was originally created in 1920 by a famed French perfumer, Ernest Beaux. Supposedly, Madame Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel asked him to create six original scents – something different from the traditional ‘pretty floral’ scents that were en vogue at that time. Apparently Chanel wanted a scent that ‘reflected her personality, something unique and abstract.’ He happily obliged, named them No. 1 – No. 6, but as you may have already guessed, No. 5 was her favorite.

Sales for this fragrance were fair for the better part of 30 years, but business began booming when Marilyn Monroe publicly acknowledged her love for the scent in 1953. Once asked what she wears to bed, she famously cooed, “Two drops of Chanel No. 5”…

Just in case you rarely read fine print, notes of Chanel No. 5 include ylang-ylang, jasmine, rose, neroli, vanilla, and vetiver. Such a yummy fragrant cocktail! Even Madame Chanel herself said the scent should only be worn where you want to be kissed…

Andy Warhol adored Chanel No. 5 so much, he made silk-screen prints of the bottle! (Looks like Campbell’s Soup wasn’t his only tangible love!)

The fragrance became a part of modern history in 1959. The bottle/packaging was added to the collections in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Take a quick stroll down memory lane, and watch Chanel No. 5, the three-minute film directed by Mr. Chanel himself, Karl Lagerfeld. It stars Nicole Kidman looking gloriously gorgeous while romping around on a roof with a ridiculously sexy stranger. She makes it seem like wearing this scent will make you do the darndest things…

This is one of those classic fragrances that never go out of style. Love it!
Because I’m a Marilyn Monroe, that quote was really influential in getting me to try it.

That quote by Marilyn Monroe has always been one of my fav. I believe every fashion loving female should own a bottle of Chanel No. 5 (even if she rarely wears it)
