Rita Hazan Colors J. Lo’s Locks

Looks like Jennifer Lopez is back into the swing of things.

Having given birth to twins less than a month ago, this past Friday, J. Lo dropped in on celeb colorist Rita Hazan (who has colored her hair for many years) at Rita’s namesake salon situated on swanky Fifth Avenue.

Says Rita Hazan on giving Jennifer Lopez a chocolate brown base with toffee highlights: “She let me do my thing… It’s lighter than her ‘normal’ look - we’re working towards making it blonder for summer. A work in progress til the warmer months get here.”

Added Rita, “She looked amazing - glowing - happy. Motherhood agrees with her, for sure.”

Patrick Melville Styles the Stars

Patrick Melville, owner of the Patrick Melville Salon at Sports Club/LA, is no newbie to styling the celebrities and socialites, not to mention the Victoria’s Secret Angels. The former head-stylist of the Warren-Tricomi Salon was the master behind the locks of Nicole Richie and Mischa Barton at New York’s Spring/Summer 2008 Fashion Week.

nicole-richie-mischa-barton.jpg

To achieve the voluminous ponytail of Nicole Richie for the Max Azria show, Melville started by using a one-and-a-half pipe curling iron to give the hair body. He followed by pinning the hair into a ponytail at the crown, for height. With some teasing for added volume, a few products (L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray, Kiehl’s Silk Groom) for texture, and the right tools (Mason Pearson brush)…Voi la!…the voluminous ponytail.

Melville also styled Richie’s hair for Fashion Rocks. For a more casual, chic look, Melville chose a textured and slightly messy chignon, while keeping the bangs cleanly swept to the side. To keep the style in place, he used Kersastase Spray Volumactive and L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray.

For the “Une Journee A Paris” event hosted by Van Cleef & Arpels, Melville gave Mischa Barton a relaxed, wind-blown up-do. Melville started by blow drying Mischa’s hair with a Mason Pearson brush. To create a natural look, he loosely curled Mischa’s hair with a one-inch barrel curling iron for soft waves. He used Kersastase Spray Volumactive and Peter Hantz Styling Glaze, and then teased at the roots for volume. He finished the look off with L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray.

Beyoncé’s Beautiful Zebra Hair

Beyonce 2008 Grammys

Beyoncé Knowles has always been known for playing around with her hair color; this year alone she’s been brunette, honey blonde, and as seen above, both. The bold, multidimensional platinum highlights she wore to the 2008 Grammys was such a fun, rebelish contrast to her Cinderella-style ball gown.

Love the look? Try L’Oréal Paris Hi-Light Styliste in H90 Iced Champagne, an easy-to-use highlight kit for home use.

And Andy Warhol Still Lives On and On…

… even though he passed away 21 years ago.

Iconic NYC perfume house Bond No. 9 has collaborated with The Andy Warhol Foundation for a second time. The result - Andy Warhol Union Square.

Andy Warhol Union Square

Being that Andy Warhol once said, “My favorite smell is the first smell of spring in New York,” it only makes sense to release this scent at the commencement of spring. This floral scent is bustling with notes of lily of the valley and green stems, blue freesia and white birchwood, and mellow amber and musk.

This springtime scent retails for $195 for 100ml and $135 for 50ml.

BONUS - Are you an avid Andy Warhol fan? Bond No.9 is introducing a limited edition set of ten bottles each featuring a different print of Andy Warhol’s famous Flowers piece. Think you might want to purchase? Ante up $1500 for ten 100ml bottles.

Remember when I wrote about Bumble & bumble’s Spray de Mode (The Most Fashionable Hairspray Ever) a few months back?

Today the website for Spray de Mode launched, and I must say - I’m excited to try fun, new styles with my can of Spray de Mode. (Lately, I’ve been interested in the Dita Von Teese pinup look - I’ll let you know how that goes.)

Spray de Mode styling spray is all about expressing your personal style… in celebration of that, for the product campaign we used all real people with cool, individual style to create characters that show different looks the product can create.

Check out these candid YouTube videos, aptly named the Spray de Mode Sessions, of each character before and after. Oh, BTW - all of these people were casted through Myspace!

Dewy Skin Gone Wrong

Yes, spring has sprung.

From a beauty standpoint, I guess that means overly matte skin is out, and a bit of shine is the new skin look du jour. But when is a touch of dewiness a bit too much?

Renee Zel;weger shiny skin

We have our answer.

At the Maysville, Kentucky premiere of her latest film, Leatherheads, 38 year-old actress Renee Zellweger turned up on the red carpet looking downright shiny as opposed to dewy and refreshed. I wonder why?

Some say she undergoes a few extensive skin treatments before promoting a movie… I’m guessing a chemical peel. Sex and the City fans, remember when Samantha Jones had a chemical peel for Carrie Bradshaw’s book release party?

I’m just saying.

Leech Therapy?!?!?!?!?

Actress Demi Moore has made no qualms about wanting to keep up her gorgeous appearance by any means necessary. (With a hot young husband like Ashton Kutcher, why woudn’t she?)
Demi Moore on David Letterman

While I can certainly understand a nip and tuck here and there, or attending a botox party every few months, I can’t quite give my seal of approval on her latest beauty trick: detox therapy with blood-sucking leeches.

Ew. Typing that just made my skin crawl.

Last night on The David Letterman Show, Demi Moore said the following: “I feel like I’ve always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimize your health and healing… I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy… These aren’t just swamp leeches though - we are talking about highly trained medical leeches. These are not some low level scavengers - we’re talking high level blood suckers… They have a little enzyme that when they are biting down in you it gets released in your blood and generally you bleed for quite a bit - and your health is optimized… It detoxifies your blood - I’m feeling very detoxified right now. I did it in some woman’s house laying on her bed. We did a little sampler first, which is in the belly button… It crawls in and you feel it bite down on you and you want to go, ‘You bastard.’ Then you relax and work on your Lemaze breathing just to kind of relax… You watch it swell up on your blood, watching it get fatter and fatter - then when its super drunk on your blood it just kind of rolls over like it is stumbling out of the bar.”

Barf.

To each their own.

Rita Hazan: “I HATE my new hair color!”

Bad Hair Color

These are thoughts that often run through a girl’s mind if she ends up hating her newly dyed hair color: (1) Do you go back to the same person? (2) Can you see someone different at the same salon? (3) What if you have a long relationship with your colorist… can you leave and how?

You’re NOT alone - I hear all these questions all the time. Just a few things to remember:

~ You’re the client and ultimately YOU should be happy. this is your hair and you definitely have a say in who touches it.

~If you’re seeing someone for the first time and don’t like the result, I would still give them a second chance. I always say the second time is always better for the colorist /stylist because you’re getting to know your client’s hair and how it reacts to color. Exception to this rule: If your experience was a total disaster, then you can totally ask for your money back or simply see someone else - I wouldn’t recommend going back to the person that destroyed your hair!

~If you’re looking to “break up” with your long time colorist for any reason (they were rude, or your color has been the same for years, or they’re just not getting it anymore), don’t feel bad for wanting to see someone else. The most important thing is that you look and feel gorgeous! You can even go back to the same salon if you want; actually sometimes telling your colorist a little white lie is okay too - you can say “I really needed my hair done and you’re busy, so I will try someone else and see you next time.” I know that colorists/stylists have a bad rap when it comes to things like this, but we are not as sensitive as you think. We know that the reality is people come and go and come back - as long as the clients are happy , then we’re happy! So don’t be afraid to make your move, we can handle it.

Good luck!

xx, Rita Hazan

Ashley Javier Shares His Top Hair Tips for 2008

Super stylist Ashley Javier must be one busy man. An expert for Herbal Essences, and an in demand globetrotting hairstylist to the stars (he’s styled the manes of Nicole Richie, Avril Lavigne, and Chloë Sevigny), Ashley Javier still finds time to create cool coifs for the catwalk. (Shown in the photo below, he’s working his magic backstage at Sari Gueron Fall 2008 show during NY Fashion Week.)
Ashley Javier

Here’s Ashley Javier shares five trends and tips on how to get hot, haute hair for 2008:

1. Hair can be a sign of youth and vitality. So especially in winter – when our hair is dry and we’re using heat/styling tools on top of this – its important to take special care of your tips. They’ve been exposed to much more than your new growth, so they need the most love. A deep conditioner will help immensely.

2. Women today no longer feel compelled to cut their hair as they age; they can have long hair and still maintain a sophisticated, contemporary style. Add a few highlights around the face, just to frame and brighten it up. After all, long hair should be sophisticated – not like the cut you had when you were twelve! And with long hair, it’s even more important to take care of those ends. The Long Term Relationship product softens and protects hair for as long as you want. Try the Split End Protector, which can be used all throughout the day to protect hair during this dehydrating season.

3. Not everyone wants to go long. When it comes to a youthful style, cuts are going shorter with graphic lines. To compliment the bold hair cuts and shapes, women need to use haircolor to add texture and richness to their style. (Herbal Essences Color Me Vibrant has three new red shades and two new brunette shades that will give that rich, deep color.)

4. Dark colors are really a stunning accessory – they add contrast and provide a chic, stunning look. It’s not about a light blonde suddenly going black though – it’s about just going a couple shades darker for the season.

5. I tell all of my clients – with any color or style, maintenance is key to keep hair looking its youthful best. A good conditioner is really important, but a clear gloss will also give your hair a shiny boost.
