Rita Hazan: Brunette to Blonde?

brookeburns.jpg

Dear Rita:
I am a natural brunette and I am considering going blonde, but I am afraid my hair may look too orange? What do you suggest?

Thanks, Kyra!

Says Rita:
That’s a valid concern, as that can happen very easily.

There are a few ways to avoid this:
First, take it slow! Don’t try to go too light too fast. The lighter you try to go all at once, the more red /orange pigment will come out. You can start by adding more highlights to your hair and maybe taking your base color about 2 shades lighter at first. Then, as time goes by, you can make your hair lighter each time you color.

If you are looking for more instant gratification, I would scout out the colorist closest to you that specializes in this type of color change. Do some research first, bring pictures with you and know exactly what color you want before going to the salon. Also, know that it is a process and will take time to get it perfect. Make sure the colorist knows how much you hate orange and they will try to avoid it.

xx, Rita Hazan
