#NYFW Backstage: Boy by Band of Outsiders

James Kaliardos for M.A.C. and Neil Moodie for Bumble and Bumble have the Cali surfer girl down to a science behind the scenes at Boy by Band of Outsiders. Makeup and hair for the show has been the most natural and effortless chic we’ve seen on the runway this season. For the tomboys, the surf chicks, and the low-maintenance gals, Boy by Band of Outsiders SS 2010 beauty is just for you!

Makeup

Glam: Can you describe your vision for us?

James: It’s like a beach girl, Malibu or Venice…more Venice. You know like the surfer girl. Very natural. It’s almost like movie makeup. We’re taking these poor, skinny, blonde, pasty Russian girls and we’re turning them into surfer girls to make them look like they’ve been out in the sun without making it look like they have a lot of makeup on. We’re changing their skin color but not in any way glamorous.

Glam: I see you’re using a lot of bronzer. Are you also applying it to the neck and chest?

James: Yeah. We’re using face and body but it’s sheer though.

Glam: Can you walk us through the M.A.C. products you’re using today?

James: Face and Body Foundation, a little lip balm, Blush Creme in Posey. Set it with some mineral powder. That’s it.

Glam: What about nails?

James: Just a clean nail. No color. I think spring is about being selective about where you put your color- what you choose to do to your face, where you put it, and which products you use.

Hair

Glam: Can you describe your SS 2010 hair for this show?

Neil: Kind of quite natural, a little beachy. Really sort of like they’re these really cool girls-nothing too styled, nothing too much. It’s a natural texture. A little dry looking.

Glam: Are you using any product?

Neil: Bumble and Bumble Prep Spray when the hair is a little damp then some styling cream on top which makes the hair look a little more like it’s been a day old and they’ve been in the ocean. Using a little bit of Surf Spray if we need it.

Glam: What trends have you seen for spring?

Neil: Seems like it’s super structured or really effortless. I’m seeing more long hair.

Glam: What hairstyle are you over at the moment?

Neil: Straight hair! Like straightening iron hair. I think it is starting to fade out now but it’s taking a while. I think we faded it out but people on the street haven’t. It looks like a wig. I hate it!

Glam: How do you talk a die-hard NYC hair straightening addict into putting down the Chi?

Neil: I think it’s about showing them other ways to do it like how to dress it without being SO straightened. I don’t think it’s about proving a statement.
