We caught up with the celebrity stylist right in the midst of the Emmys madness. He’s best known for his work in fashion, but here he proves that he knows a thing or two about beauty as well.

What beauty trends are you seeing on the red carpet right now?
I think now more than ever, the beauty trends on the red carpet are natural. It’s all about getting that natural glow without feeling and looking too overdone. The celebrities want to let their natural beauty come through! And they look absolutely radiant. I was just at New York Fashion Week and one of the major trends for Spring/Summer 2010 is nude tones. For the face, it’s all about light blushes, subtle bronzers, slight sparkle, and dewy natural-looking skin. Nothing heavy. It’s very subtle and simple—and all about the natural glow. You don’t want to wear a lot of makeup or use a lot of creams and artificial colors. Keep it smooth and you’ll glide through life!
Any standout hair trends?
Hair right now is polished and chic but not too overdone. The best hair looks are the ones that don’t look like they spent hours to create and perfect. Most of the celebrities spend thousands of dollars and employed a small village to look like they’ve just rolled out of bed, tousled their hair, and are effortlessly chic. And you can achieve this look at home without spending an arm and a leg because now more than ever, it’s about natural beauty. Don’t go for the big blow-outs and the teased hair. Again, it’s all about keeping it natural. It’s you … but better!
What are your go-to products to help clients get red-carpet ready?
To get the perfect hair-free canvas, I recommend TRIA Laser (available for $795 at TriaBeauty.com) to all of my clients. That way, they are completely silky and smooth by the time the award shows roll around and there’s no risk of last minute unsightly razor nicks or burns. I also recommend using a moisturizer with SPF, a super-moisturizing lipstick or gloss, and a great hair spray to keep everything in place (even if the look is intentionally a bit askew and tousled!) and looking paparazzi perfect.
What is the most important thing celebrities do to get ready for the red carpet?
When it comes to getting red carpet ready in Hollywood, it’s all about the skin. Even when these girls are in their gowns, they’re still mostly half-dressed – there’s a lot of skin showing so you want it to be smooth and glowing. Many of my clients ask me how they can achieve that soft beautiful skin. Most of the time, they usually end up wasting their money on all these expensive creams, lotions, and potions in order to attempt to get that glamorous glow. They’re not the answer. And neither is shaving because you’re going to be left with all that stubble. And waxing is beyond painful. So I just tell them to put down their creams, razors, and wax strips and use TRIA. It will get rid of all that unwanted hair and leave your skin feeling smooth and silky 24/7. And that’s what it’s all about, after all.
How can readers get a red carpet ready look at home, say for a date night?
Let’s face it, for beauty treatments celebrities normally spend a day at the salon or spa. Or they have the added luxury of being able to have the top pros come to their home. But they pay a pretty penny for the luxury! And don’t we all want to feel like celebrities? Well, you can still get that glamour and glow in the comfort of your own home for the fraction of what celebrities pay. Do it yourself with the TRIA – it’s easy! It only takes 5 minutes to do under one arm … and in 10 minutes you can have both done and feel like a million bucks. Do you really have to go to a salon for that? Why not feel like a star without leaving home!
