The seasonal struggle of treating dry skin has suddenly crept up into my daily skin routine. By now it is obvious that my daily use of lotions and moisturizers can help treat the symptoms of dehydrated skin, but what about treating the source?
According to EverydayHealth.com, certain dietary choices can help remedy dry, itchy, scaly skin. Here are a few healthy, helpful tips:
An important part of the skin barrier is lipids. Without lipids, the water that keeps our skin hydrated escapes. Foods that are high in omega-3 and omega-6 acids like salmon, flaxseed oil, and some types of eggs, hydrate the skin and prevent water from evaporating. Also, by taking vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin C, Copper, and Zinc, you can help promote the formation of collagen which assists in maintaining plump, hydrated skin.
Contrary to popular belief, drinking large amounts of water may not affect skin. The water that we drink, while it is extremely beneficial through out the body, may not impact the external look or feel of our skin. It is the skin’s outer layer that is essential for keeping moisture in.
