Have you noticed any textural changes in your hair during the colder seasons? (If you’re like me, you probably tend to use your blow dryer and hair products more frequently in in the winter.) For those with fine, dry, or damaged hair, the change in maintenance can often make your hair more oily between washes. Here are a few techniques that can help keep a “slicked back” look purely intentional.
Don’t Rub Your Scalp
Avoid vigorously rubbing your scalp while shampooing, as that will over activate sebaceous gland that secrets natural oils into your hair, and in turn your hair will become more greasy. If you don’t have naturally oily hair, try not to wash your hair everyday. And when you do wash try using a mild shampoo.
Condition Your Tips Only
Some say the best thing you can do for your hair is to stop conditioning all together. But if your mane is a bit more difficult to manage, conditioning just the ends of your hair (starting below the ears) will scale down the amount of oil that accumulates on your roots.
Tea Tree Oils
Natural tea tree oils are great for reducing oil from your scalp, while also fighting unsightly dandruff. Apply a few drops of tea tree oil to your scalp and wash using a mild shampoo. You can also find a number of tea tree shampoos that work just as well; one of our favorites is Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Special Shampoo.
The Ultimate Tip
Keep your hands out of your hair! You may think running your fingers through your gorgeous strands is sexy, but it will only make your hair more oily. And that would just start the cycle all over again, wouldn’t it?
