A Day in the Life of Beauty: New York Dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman

Glam caught up with New York Dermatologist, Dr. Debra Jaliman, as she screens patients for skin cancer, injects others with Botox and follows her own trade secrets to a healthy life. Here she shares her daily schedule:

6:00AM: I wake up early and take my vitamins that sit by my bedside. I take 2,000 mgs of Vitamin D (Rule 15 from my book, Skin Rules: Vitamin D is good, but not when it comes from the sun). I also squeeze a lemon and put it into a bottle of Evian with a small amount of sweetener, which I bring with me on my walk. I eat a Kind bar (Madagascar Vanilla Almond); it has seven grams of protein and only four grams of sugar so it’s very filling and tastes great. I wash my face with Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Cleanser and then apply Neova DNA Damage Control Everyday SPF 44. I take out my Havanese dog, Truffles and we walk three miles. On the way home, I stop for a steamed skim milk with a splash of hazelnut coffee topped with cinnamon.
8:00AM: After my shower, I reapply sunscreen and use Latisse to my lashes (Rule 12: Ditch the fake lashes and grow real ones instead). Once I blow-dry my hair, I use my new Solia flat iron—it’s a dream! It’s been a long winter so I finally got to wear one my new spring Chanel dresses.
9:00AM: My first stop of the day is skin cancer screenings for a magazine. I explain the importance of wearing SPF 30 every day (broad spectrum) to the employees and also find some abnormal moles that are potentially cancerous. For lunch, I visit the cafeteria and choose a chicken salad sans dressing with Evian water. I top it off by splurging on two small pieces of chocolate (Ghirardelli milk chocolate with caramel). I know dark chocolate is healthier but I have a sweet tooth!
2:00PM: After the magazine skin screening finishes at 1:30 p.m., I start seeing patients in my own practice. In between sessions, I drink plenty of green tea iced to keep me refreshed (Rule 75: Drink lots of green tea because we know that it aids weight loss by boosting metabolism) and snack on a Siggi’s Icelandic Peach Yogurt. I end up injecting some patients with filler, some with Botox. I also perform surgery on a patient with an early malignant melanoma. Another life saved! One patient had Coolsculpting to freeze fat on her inner thighs. A very busy day!
6:30PM: I finish my last patient and go to the gourmet store to buy line-caught salmon (love those omega oils). I also pick up tomatoes rich in lycopenes, macadamia nut oil for my salad dressing because it’s a monosaturated fat and high in omega-3/omega-6 fats, and organic baby carrots which are high in beta-carotene vitamin A.
7:00PM: I bake the salmon in the oven as my main course. For side dishes, I make quinoa (high in protein) and a salad of arugula with tomatoes and spinach. I need my anti-oxidants, so I keep dessert simple and healthy by choosing blueberries and mangoes. According to Rule 76 in my book, I always recommend eating right by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables (go organic whenever possible). There’s a lot of research that shows if you eat a lot of junk or high-sugar/high-glycemic food, you are more prone to acne or premature wrinkles. Dinner and dessert are a hit with my boyfriend and my daughter, and I even have Truffles by my side begging for scraps.
8:30PM: I wind down at this point and start my evening skin care routine. I wash my face and apply RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream (Rule 50: Anti-aging creams and serums aren’t just hype). Did you know that RoC pioneered retinol 25 years ago? The Night Cream is one of the top products I recommend to my patients who are interested in effective retinol solutions. Once that’s over, it’s time to catch up on reading and be in bed early for my eight hours of beauty rest (Rule 77: Beauty sleep is no myth. Try to sleep on your back or if you sleep on your side, use a satin pillow case or a beauty pillow to avoid getting sleep lines)

Gwyneth Paltrow Is the Face of Hugo Boss’s Newest Scent

Gwyneth Paltrow has a lot on her plate lately. Besides maintaining Goop, she’s opened a blow dry bar, published her second cookbook, and was named People’s Most Beautiful Woman. But now the multi-tasking mom is adding an old title back to her resume: fragrance spokesperson.

The Iron Man 3 actress is the face of Hugo Boss’ newest scent, Boss Jour Pour Femme. Lensed by Guy Aroch and Jordan Scott (daughter of Ridley Scott) for print and TV respectively, the pair focused on the energizing air that it takes to keep up with Paltrow’s schedule. “I think Jour is the perfect name for it – it’s very uplifting,” she told Women’s Wear Daily. She wakes up everyday at 7:00 AM to get her children ready for school before a workout and putting effort into her ever-expanding wellness site.

The perfume itself contrasts Boss Nuit Pour Femme with notes of grapefruit flower and lime, freesia, lily of the valley, and honeysuckle at the heart of it, and white birch and creamy amber to anchor the base.

Amongst all of her activities, Paltrow’s actually a fragrance collector with at least a hundred in her possession. “I am one of those people who have a whole closet full of perfume. I love it; I have always loved it and have always had a wardrobe full of scent.”

Boss Jour Pour Femme will be available for $46.00-$75.00.

Why I am Totally Doing Another Juice Cleanse

IT MIGHT BE ABOUT TIME TO STOP CALLING THE JUICING TREND A TREND—making green juices has become a way of life for so many. Veggies that were once the domain of the health obsessed—wheatgrass, kale, the whole chard family—are now being blended into juices and smoothies every day across America. I’ll admit, I was initially skeptical about the whole thing. That tends to be my reaction whenever something becomes too popular. But it turns out that the whole juicing and smoothie craze was actually a trend that I could and should get behind, and when I did a 3 day juice cleanse myself it made such a noticeable difference in my appetites that I knew I’d be getting into it myself.

I have an issue with texture, and the thickness of smoothies can be too much for me. I find myself preferring to juice rather than blend my vegetables for that reason. In my last post about juicing I was pretty candid about the experience—the good and the bad. So given the fact that I almost peed my pants on the way home from the post office the last time, what’s making me do another juice cleanse? The fact that juice cleanses help me to regain control and awareness of what I’m ingesting. Here are three reasons why I’m totally doing another juice cleanse:

  1. Doing a three day juice cleanse proved to me that I did have self-control. Lately I’ve been feeling a complete lack of self control, and I feel the need to rein in my appetites again. Juicing helped to slow me down in terms of my consumption. I went into the juice cleanse not thinking I could actually do it. Proving myself wrong felt awesome!
  2. Juicing helps to remind me of what food truly is about—and that is nutrition. So instead of eating because I’m bored or having a particular craving, juicing reduces it all to the bare essentials my body truly needs.
  3. It helps to kill my sugar cravings and my unholy desires for white processed foods. After my juice cleanse experience, I felt like I learned how to eat right again and it helped to reset everything. Now to just somehow manage to keep it up, forever!

I’m about to go on a decadent vacation to South Florida, where I’ll be consuming mass quantities of Caribbean and Cuban food, all washed down with sugary sweet cocktails. When I get back I totally plan to get my mind and my body right with the three day juice cleanse, and a focused exercise regimen. Summer’s coming and I want to be ready!

Are you into juicing? Have you tried a juice cleanse? What were your results?

Rita Ora Channels Smurfette

Rita Ora has been giving us some serious hair envy since last year, but this week, she took a different turn thanks to a startling hair shade switch.

The normally platinum blonde beauty decreed it was “smurf day” on her Instagram and she shared a few pictures of her new blue hair. We believe it might be a touch of the punk influence that rubbed off on her thanks to her gal pal, Cara Delevingne, who attended the Met Ball a few weeks ago.

Blue hair has been synonymous with another songstress (and colorful character), Katy Perry, but the vibrant hue surely bucks the red and blonde trend we’ve spotted on celebs lately. Do you think Ora’s new ‘do is more Smurfette or Marge Simpson?

Elisabeth Moss Goes Back to Blonde

We’re not sure if blondes have more fun, but many celebs have been testing the waters as of late! The newest addition to the bevy of bottle blondes is Elisabeth Moss.

The Mad Men star made her summer shade switch yesterday, quickly transitioning from brown in Los Angeles to strawberry blonde locks in New York City. She had originally opted for a more platinum blonde at last year’s Emmy’s, but dived into a darker hue just a month later.

While we love the new look, we can’t help but wonder if this will make it into Peggy’s plot line. What do you think of her lighter locks?

Striking Summer Polishes

Say goodbye to your tried-and-true darks and go-with-everything greiges! This summer is all about vibrant manis and pedis. It’s time to crank things up a notch by breaking out the neons, the glitters, and the vivid shades. Whether you’re a fan of a classic solid-hued manicure or a daring nail art fanatic, give your nails some serious punch with the newest bold and bright polishes. Don’t be afraid to stand out with a neon pink pedicure or a manicure laced with chunky glitter. And definitely don’t worry about matching your nails to your clothes – where polish is concerned, it’s anything goes, as long as you remember this: the brighter the better.
