Look Like Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos!

Maria Menounos
Maria Menounos at The 15th Annual Race to Erase MS Red Carpet Extravaganza.

The theme of the red carpet event was Old Hollywood, and with that in mind, celebrity makeup artist Bret Boreman took his inspiration from the icons of the 1960’s and created a modern day ‘Glam Goddess’ look on Maria Menounos. “I took Old Hollywood, and gave it a modern twist,” says Boreman. “I wanted the look to have fresh, dewy skin with a stained red lip. To do this, I colored in the lips using a red pencil, then with my index finger, I pressed the color lightly giving the lips a raspberry red, stained appearance. For the skin, I combined a moisturizer with the Stila All Over Shimmering Illuminizer, massaging it into the skin, followed by foundation. This three-product combination; moisturizer, illuminizer and foundation conceals, protects and makes the skin shimmer for a modern take on a classic look.”

Get Madonna’s Hard Candy Cover Look

Madonna Hard Candy cover

In case you didn’t know, for the cover of her latest album Hard Candy, Madonna (the ultimate chameleon), called on Gina Brooke, the Artistic Director of Shu Uemura, to create her super sexy look. Says Brooke, “It’s all about the eyes and we were both inspired by images taken in the sixties by photographer Sam Haskins (Cowboy Kate, Five Girls, and November Girls). I wanted to put a modern-day twist on these beautiful photographs of beautiful women from the sixties”.

Here’s how Gina designed the look using Shu Uemura products:

STEP 1: Prepare the face
Begin with prepping the eyes with the Moisture Eye Zone Mask ($43). This will not only calm puffiness but it will give your eyes the ultimate hydration. Then apply Phyto Black Lift Firming Anti-Wrinkle Cream ($125) on the whole face – it’s an amazing moisturizer and also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Lastly, apply Face Architect Smoothing Fluid Foundation ($42) beginning at the arch of your brow down to the middle of your eye, directly onto the middle of the cheekbone. Each time the sun reflects off your skin, it will create the illusion of glowing, dewy, healthy, radiant skin!

STEP 2: Prime the eyelids
Using a Kolinsky Brush 11, apply Pressed Eye Shadow in M Beige 800 ($20) above the eyelids. Then, use Cover Crayon in 9YR Light ($24) in the inner corner and water line of the eyes to make them appear larger. Using the Drawing Pencil in Black ($19), begin at the inner corners extending the line out all the way to the end of the eyebrow.

STEP 3: Prep the lashes
Use the Eyelash Curler ($19) before applying Basic Black Mascara ($27.50) beginning at the base and rolling the brush through the tips of lashes. Apply Soft Cross Lashes ($20) to draw attention and enhance the shape of the eye.

STEP 4: Finish off with the lips
Since the focus is on the eyes, use Rouge Unlimited Crystal Shines in PK 301S ($23) layered with Gloss Unlimited in BG 930N ($22) for a soft, natural look.

How to Look Fresh-Faced and Fabulous

Ashely Olsen is incredibly inspiring to me. While she definitely takes risks in the fashion arena, her beauty look tends to more or less remain the same. I ran across this photo of her at the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards that sums up her preferred look perfectly:

Ashley Olsen Fresh-Faced

Her smooth glistening skin + lush upper lashes = PERFECTION.

Here’s everything you need to recreate her utterly flawless look:

foundation-mascara.jpg

For a seamlessly even, glowing complexion, brush-on L’Oreal Bare Naturale General Mineral Foundation. It’ll feel incredibly light on your skin, plus it’s infused with SPF & nurturing vitamins. BONUS: It’s perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin since it won’t clog your pores. Can’t beat that.

For come-hither eyes, long lush lashes are key. Create standout eyes with Maybelline’s Define-a-Lash Volume Mascara; simply pull the brush from lash root-to-tip a couple of times, and you’re done.

Could achieving Ashely Olsen’s look be any easier? BTW - head over to your local Wal-Mart to pick both of these up must-have goodies up.

Three Tips to Help You Get Your Beauty Sleep

Beauty Sleep

Have trouble sleeping? Don’t rely on dangerous sleeping pills - try a safer, non-prescription approach. “Most people who have trouble sleeping do not need sleeping pills,” says sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus. “The scents in Aromatherapy Sleep products are scientifically proven to help provide a better night’s sleep. I recommend that those who have trouble falling and staying asleep try the formulas before turning to more drastic measures like sleeping aides.”

Dr. Breus shares his top tips for falling deep into slumber the old-fashioned way:

1) Take a hot bath: “Taking a hot bath before bed heats up our body’s core, then cools it down just like the process when we sleep,” says Dr. Breus. “Therefore a hot bath can trigger a biological function that our bodies associate with being at rest.”

2) Get a relaxing massage: “A relaxing massage is a great way to de-stress and help us get ready for bed,” says Dr. Breus. “Ask your partner to give you a massage using Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy Sleep Body Lotion to help relax or apply the formula yourself very slowly, taking deep breaths along the way.”

3) Be aware of surroundings: “Our surroundings play a huge role in the quality of our sleep,” says Dr. Breus. “By using the Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy Sleep Pillow Mist on your bedding you are creating a calm environment that is conducive to sleep.”

Leech Therapy?!?!?!?!?

Actress Demi Moore has made no qualms about wanting to keep up her gorgeous appearance by any means necessary. (With a hot young husband like Ashton Kutcher, why woudn’t she?)
Demi Moore on David Letterman

While I can certainly understand a nip and tuck here and there, or attending a botox party every few months, I can’t quite give my seal of approval on her latest beauty trick: detox therapy with blood-sucking leeches.

Ew. Typing that just made my skin crawl.

Last night on The David Letterman Show, Demi Moore said the following: “I feel like I’ve always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimize your health and healing… I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy… These aren’t just swamp leeches though - we are talking about highly trained medical leeches. These are not some low level scavengers - we’re talking high level blood suckers… They have a little enzyme that when they are biting down in you it gets released in your blood and generally you bleed for quite a bit - and your health is optimized… It detoxifies your blood - I’m feeling very detoxified right now. I did it in some woman’s house laying on her bed. We did a little sampler first, which is in the belly button… It crawls in and you feel it bite down on you and you want to go, ‘You bastard.’ Then you relax and work on your Lemaze breathing just to kind of relax… You watch it swell up on your blood, watching it get fatter and fatter - then when its super drunk on your blood it just kind of rolls over like it is stumbling out of the bar.”

Barf.

To each their own.

Rita Hazan: “I HATE my new hair color!”

Bad Hair Color

These are thoughts that often run through a girl’s mind if she ends up hating her newly dyed hair color: (1) Do you go back to the same person? (2) Can you see someone different at the same salon? (3) What if you have a long relationship with your colorist… can you leave and how?

You’re NOT alone - I hear all these questions all the time. Just a few things to remember:

~ You’re the client and ultimately YOU should be happy. this is your hair and you definitely have a say in who touches it.

~If you’re seeing someone for the first time and don’t like the result, I would still give them a second chance. I always say the second time is always better for the colorist /stylist because you’re getting to know your client’s hair and how it reacts to color. Exception to this rule: If your experience was a total disaster, then you can totally ask for your money back or simply see someone else - I wouldn’t recommend going back to the person that destroyed your hair!

~If you’re looking to “break up” with your long time colorist for any reason (they were rude, or your color has been the same for years, or they’re just not getting it anymore), don’t feel bad for wanting to see someone else. The most important thing is that you look and feel gorgeous! You can even go back to the same salon if you want; actually sometimes telling your colorist a little white lie is okay too - you can say “I really needed my hair done and you’re busy, so I will try someone else and see you next time.” I know that colorists/stylists have a bad rap when it comes to things like this, but we are not as sensitive as you think. We know that the reality is people come and go and come back - as long as the clients are happy , then we’re happy! So don’t be afraid to make your move, we can handle it.

Good luck!

xx, Rita Hazan

Excellent Red Lip Tips

Sienna Miller red lips

In a world where everything old becomes new again within the blink of an eye, red lips seem to still be having a rather trendy moment, as they’re still popping up on everyone from Sienna Miller to Katharine Heigl to Gwen Stefani to Dita Von Teese. (Maybe for these gals, it’s not just a trend - red lipstick seems like a lifeline to them.)

Anyway, if you notice, all four of these celebs have something in common - they’re all super pale-skinned. If you happen to love the red-lipped look, but look nothing like the aforementioned stars, The Sun sought to help. They asked British celebrity makeup artist Sue Moxley to break down which type reds would look best on each complexion:

~Dark skinned or olive coloured skin you can get away with almost any type of red.

~Yellow skin should avoid orangey reds and go for pinky red so as no to end up looking more sallow.

~Pale skins should be very careful and stick to brown red and blot it so its not too strong.

Rita Hazan: 5 Tips on Picking a Great Colorist

Having your hair colored isn’t a task that should be taken lightly, and as with any big decision, a bit of investigative sleuthing is the best way to find the perfect colorist for you. Here, hair colorist extraordinaire Rita Hazan shares 5 tips on how to choose the best colorist for you:

Rita Hazan Coloring Hair

1. Make sure that you like their work. Referrals are the best way to find a great colorist or stylist. When you see a hair color that you love, don’t be afraid to ask the person where they had it done. (If you keep hearing the same name, you’ve definitely found your colorist!) If you keep hearing different names, you can always schedule a consultation.

2. You should always feel comfortable with your hair colorist. If you don’t, feel free to leave without any penalty. That is why it is important to schedule a consultation prior to the actual appointment - this will give you an idea if they are right for you.

3. I always suggest bringing pictures of color you like and don’t like. This way the colorist will have a better understanding of the tone your looking for - with pictures there is no room for errors.

***TIP: Never trust a colored swatch of hair that is typically shown to you, the color is dyed on synthetic hair and will never be the same!

4. Know what you want before you go in. You don’t have to know exactly but have an idea - never say, “do whatever you want.” You won’t be happy!

5. Always tell your colorist your chemical history from up to two years back. Whether you had a relaxer, or your hair used to be black, these things make a huge difference when you color your hair!

5 Signs of a BAD Manicure

Raise your hand if you’ve ever popped into an obscure nail salon in hopes of getting a quick, top-quality manicure at a ridiculously cheap price, only to be left disappointed with less-than-stellar results… Yeah, it’s happened to all of us.

manicure

Meet Nicole Dinh, a manicurist to the stars (Christina Aguilera and Dayna Devon, host of Extra TV show); she shares five signs of a bad manicure. While sometimes you may not notice manicure mishaps immediately, closely check your nails next time to see - it may be time to change nail salons.

1. Poor shape of nails.

Solution: Your hand size and nail bed should be assessed first, then shaped according to their size and proportion.

2. Ragged cuticles or hang nails.

Solution: Hang nails should be gently trimmed, never pulled on with cuticle nippers. The cuticle base should never be cut, only trimmed where there is excess skin.

3. Unfinished nail edge.

Solution: When filing natural nails, always use a fine emery board. Emery boards should be appropriate to the specific nail type, either fine quality for natural nails or coarse texture for artificial nails.

4. Poor polish color quality and application.

Solution: make sure your manicurist exercises proper technique to paint the nails, so that the nail bed is completely covered; the nail bed should not be visible on the sides of the nail. Only professional quality nail polish should be used in order to prevent streaking and/or uneven color texture.

5. Chipped polish the day after.

Solution: Nails should always be cleaned before polish is applied and a professional quality base coat should always be used. Manicures that incorporate proper tools, professional quality products and appropriate techniques typically last at least one week.
