Exclusive Q&A: Dr. Susan Taylor

Earlier this year, I had a chance to chat with Dr. Susan Taylor, an amazing dermatologist who has a skincare line that aims to cure the many dermal issues women of color face. She’s also the author of this amazing book, Brown Skin.

When did you decide you wanted to be a dermatologist?
During my third year at Harvard medical school, I took my first dermatology rotation and I absolutely loved it! I knew then that dermatology was the field within medicine for me.

What is your favorite product from your product line (that you personally use)?
Absolute Radiance Intensive Exfoliating Serum which I use once or twice a week to exfoliate dull layers of skin to reveal radiant skin!

How do you get rid of dark elbows and knees even at an older age?
Don’t lean on elbows and knees and exfoliate gently daily with lotions and apply a hydroquinone spot lightening cream for 2-3 months.

What is the best brand of cosmetics for women of color in your opinion?
MAC, because it has great colors that match our skin tones.

In your book, Brown Skin, you also focused on hair and nails as well. Why?
As women of color, we focus on hair and nails and I felt it was important to explain how to properly care for them as well.

On Shelves Soon: Sephora’s Own Beauty Guide

Well, well, well… it’s about time! On April 15th, Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair From the Beauty Authority hits shelves.

sephora beauty book

Penned by former Sephora beauty editor Melissa Schweiger, spoke last month at a preview party for the sure-to-be-a-hit beauty manual. “Over the past 10 years, Sephora has revolutionized the beauty industry, so who better to create the ultimate beauty book makeup obsessed gals will go gaga for … A true beauty junkie must-have, it’s an exciting way to celebrate the Sephora experience. With the help of incredible brand partners and Sephora experts, each chapter is filled with information and imagery that’s fun, helpful, and insightful.”

Full of the basics (how to master the smoky eye, how to get red-carpet ready hair), Schweiger also includes an A to Z glossary, as well as a ingredient master list, and must-buys from Sephora’s lengthy roster of available brands. All in all, this book is a one-stop manual on how to be a gorgeous knockout on a daily basis.

I’ll definitely be adding this one to my Beauty Bibliothèque. Pre-order at Amazon or Harper Collins today for $27.95.

Book of the Week: The 5-Minute Face

It’s about time! Carmindy, makeup artist to the stars, has finally unloaded all of her beauty knowledge onto the pages of her first book, The 5-Minute Face. I received a gratis copy a few months ago, but I’m ashamed to tell you I haven’t had a moment to crack it open until this past Monday. I really wish I’d read it sooner! I’m totally the type of girl that only wears a full makeup look when I’ve got an extra 30 minutes to spare before I leave the house (which is NEVER). She’s given me top tips to achieve the same look in five minutes flat. Life as I knew it, is forever changed. Three cheers for Carmindy!
