Hair Q & A

Hair Q & A

I have to say my hair is thin and straight and breaks easily so I would love to know how to make it full and break free without a perm. - Joanna

Joanna, I’m glad you are going in the anti-perm route because damage to the hair is a guarantee anytime you apply a chemical application to your strands. The damage can be felt as well as seen with a lot of breakage. So, congrats to you for choosing the healthier path! The solution to getting a fuller look without causing damage starts in the shower. Try using Pantene Pro-V Volume Shampoo and Conditioner because you will be able to achieve almost half of your desired volume just by washing your hair. For even more volume, apply Pantene Pro-V Volume Mousse after washing while your hair is still damp. Don’t worry, it’s a non-sticky formula so you don’t have to fret about your hair scrunching or becoming hard when applying the product and it will give you up to 50% more body when used with shampoo and conditioner versus shampoo alone. Make sure to blow-dry your hair in a heat setting to activate these volumizers and bring to life a new voluminous look.

My hair breaks very easily. How can I get big poufy hair without backcombing? - Lisa

Hair that breaks easily can be very difficult to control and style the way you want. It’s time to give your hair some freedom to show its natural beauty and strength. You can start doing so by using the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner to help protect your hair against looming damage and breakage, and it will also help grow your hair longer in the process! If you’re looking to further protect your hair on top of using Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner, pick up some of my miracle water, Pantene Pro-V Breakage Defense Strengthening Spray. I call it my “miracle water” because I use it on almost every head of hair I touch! The spray will improve the strength of your hair and leave it silkier, shinier and smoother than before. Once you have your hair longer and stronger I suggest using a volumizer to get your desired volume. Try Pantene Pro-V Volume Root Lifter to get your desired “poufy hair”. It’s a lightweight spray that boosts body from root to tip. Use this product by spritzing it in at your roots. Then, blow-dry the roots of your hair away from the head in opposite directions for the volumizing effect. It’s a safe and easy way to get the volume you crave without the damage of backcombing.

I have naturally curly hair (hence my name)and I love to get volume, but all the volumizer products I’ve tried so far tend to dry out my hair from about mid shaft to the ends. I end up with a Gilda Radner style and it’s not cute. Can you recommend something? - Natural Curls

Unfortunately, as funny as Gilda Radner was, it’s not so funny to don her hairstyle. Start your routine with the right shampoos and conditioner. For curly hair you can’t go wrong with the Pantene Pro-V Curls Shampoo and Conditioner. This combo will work together to lock in the moisture in your hair and help create defined, virtually frizz-free curls…and we all know hydration is key to maintaining curls and fighting off dryness. To get the volume you love, try using Pantene Pro-V Volume Flexible Hold Hairspray. What’s so great about the hairspray is that it’s lightweight, so you barely feel like you’re wearing hairspray, but it’s strong enough to provide outstanding hold, even in high humidity! Give your hair a generous spray with the hairspray to pump up the volume, especially by flipping your head over to spray underneath your hair so it can support your wonderful head of curls!

I have straight dark not so thick hair. I want it longer and thicker. So I decided to not to dye them anymore. My main problem though is - they get really oily at the end of the day and flat as well. Please help me with any kind of tip! - Katia

Katia, if you are looking to grow your hair longer, I highly recommend the new Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner which will work together to make your hair ten times stronger against breakage and help you grow long, beautiful hair. To achieve more thickness and volume in your hair, I suggest applying Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Mousse before blow-drying. To prevent your hair from getting oily and flat, make sure you use volume products on wet hair rather than dry hair. Heat from blow-dryers cause the formula in volume products to swell which will give you lasting volumizing style support. The mousse is a lightweight formula that will help pump up and lift thinner hair, giving it a thick, full look.

How do I get big volume like Brigitte Bardo at the crown of my head without looking like Elvira? Every time I try to tease my hair it turns into a rat’s nest mess. Help I want that sex-kitten look! - Julie and Jasmine

Hi Girls - Trust me, there are plenty of ways to achieve eye-popping, fabulous, healthy-looking volume without having to go through the horrors of hair teasing! It’s especially important for me to remind everyone to treat your hair with a tremendous amount of care when using products and styling tools to try and pull-off the sex-kitten/glam movie star look we all crave. It’s all about healthy hair looking beautiful in the styles we create! My preferred method for creating a volume boost is a technique called “French Lacing”. This is a great way to get volume without all the damage. You first start with clean hair (removing the residue will help give you that needed boost). Next, grab a great brush instead of a comb and simply lift the entire section of hair where you want to achieve the boost. Using your brush, pull the hair down lightly and away simultaneously layering each section on top of each other. Remember to keep it very light because you are aerating the hair with a softer volume. I like to mist the “lace” base with a finishing volume aerosol spray to lock down the look without weighting it down. Pantene’s Volume Hairspray is perfect for this. Finally, softly brush over the top of each section to achieve a smooth seamless volume without all the hair stress.

When I blow dry my hair, it always ends up limp and super flat. I’ve tried a root-lifting spray, but it just makes my hair sticky and still leaves it flat! What am I doing wrong here? - Syndia, Nikki and Lauren B.

All 3 of you seem to have the same problem. Coming from years of hair experience, I can tell you that volume is always an asset to have after styling your hair - no one wants to lose the volume in the process and have your hair fall flat! To start, use Pantene Pro-V Volume Shampoo and Conditioner which build body and lift without weighing your hair down. This will give you the base treatment for the natural-looking, high volume you desire. When blow drying make sure you are directing the heat from root to tip (away from the head). A quick and easy trick is to flip your head upside down. Make sure you do not apply too much volumizing products and always add heat to get the full effect from the products. Finally, spray your hair with Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray to add fullness. The hairspray will work well with your hair because it has a lower water content than other hairsprays so it won’t weigh your hair down or saturate it with too much product. It’s great for styling hair into the big, soft voluminous look you are all going for because it’s strong enough to provide outlasting hold to any style you feel like creating. It’s also super flexible, so your hair can move and bounce naturally – no one will believe you are even wearing hairspray! It can be our little secret.

xx, Danilo

Danilo Answers Your Textured Hair Questions

textured hair

LaurenB
I have really straight hair… Is there any product I can just spray in and scrunch my hair to get a messy-chic beachy look? Every product I’ve tried just makes me look messy (minus the chic)!

A beachy style is one that is created naturally with the help of the outside world; e.g. wind, salt air and salt water but, no worries, you don’t even have to go to the beach to achieve this look. Instead, place a dollop of my favorite “tousling product”, the Pantene Pro-V Texture Foam Wax, into your hands and gently rub together. Rake the mousse through slightly damp hair using your fingers to scrunch random sections. For best results I recommend pulling the product through under-layers of hair first, before moving to the surface of your hair. Do this and you’ll look like you came straight from the beach in no time.

Ariel
How do I get beachy waves without my hair looking really frizzy?

Ariel, try the technique I shared in the question above to get the “beachy” waves in your hair. To help lessen the frizz, I would use Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray in affected or prone areas of your hair where frizz is a problem for you. This will give you long lasting flexible hold even in high humidity conditions and will lock in your “beachy” wave style while leaving your hair bouncy, smooth and frizz-free.

I have curly hair but a day at the beach leaves my hair wind blown frizzy/straight and lifeless. What product would be best to use to define the curls but not weigh my hair down and as a bonus, add some shine?

First and foremost, don’t be afraid to play with your curls. Start by giving your hair a healthy base; try the Pantene Pro-V Texture Shampoo and Conditioner help prep your hair for styling. After you have washed and gently towel dried your curls, I recommend shaping some of your curls with your fingers while they are wet. Next do an all over spritz and scrunch with the Pantene Texture Spray Wax. Finally, spray your curls with Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray to further lock the definition where needed. The hairspray is great because not only will it help keep your curls under control, it will also give your hair a boost of shine!

Meghan
Hi Danilo, What is the best product & technique to get piecy, textured, “just-spent-the-day-at-the-beach” tousled waves that will last well into the night? Thanks!

To achieve a textured “piecey” style, use fingertips to pull or twist the Pantene Pro-V Texture Sculpting Wax through dry hair strands of selected hair pieces. Gently slide your fingers down the length of each section, lifting, molding and twisting them into shape. This formula contains ceresin wax, which creates gravity-defying styles that will last well into the night, perfect for a summer party! Mold, shape and scrunch strands where you’d like to create that natural-looking beach style.

Alexis
My hair is between wavy & curly, but not in a good way! How do I get this (texturized) style without the frizz and without the waves falling limp?
To add more definition to your in-between wavy and curly look, I recommend creating a “cocktail” with the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Serum and the Texture Spray Wax in the palm of your hand. Apply this “cocktail” to slightly damp hair from the roots to the ends, starting in the back and working toward the front. Allow your hair to dry and you will be happy to see a more defined curly look without the frizz. The mixture of the two products will also double the fight against frizz!

Beth le Roy
I have baby fine hair and not much of it. What would be a good style, with my round face? Would highlighting help give texture and body? How do I get body?

To perk up your “baby fine” hair, I recommend using a Pantene Volume Shampoo and Conditioner regime. This will help maintain your hair’s natural look but give you the body and volume you want. To achieve a volumized textured look, I recommend flipping hair over your head and giving it an all over Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray spritz. This product dries fast and creates a great textured style with a simple flip and spray. I also love this hairspray because it creates fantastic shine for all hair types, and will keep your thin hair flexible so it moves naturally with a little bounce!

Danilo Answers Your Questions on Straight Hair

istock_000004902671xsmall.jpg

Joan
1. I have naturally very straight, very fine, and rather thin hair. It is permed and color treated. What products should I be using?

Since your hair is color treated and processed, it is really important to keep a healthy regimen. This always starts with the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair. Pantene makes a great collection for color treated hair called Pantene Pro-V Expressions and you can choose the shade that’s right for your hair including blonde, brunette, red, or highlighting. The new upgraded formula has liquid crystals, which will help to maintain smoothness and shine for your hair. I would also recommend that you use Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Time Renewal Mask every few weeks. It is an amazing conditioning treat for your hair and will provide the moisture and nourishment your strands need. Once you have this healthy base your style will hold better. Since you have finer hair, don’t weigh your hair down with a lot of product. Try blowing in styling crèmes as base (these are generally lighter) and will help you get to your desired end look.

Vijal
2. Hello, I am Indian and have long thick straight hair but they are little frizzy too. Can you tell me how to make them super straight? Thanks.

Absolutely Vijal, no one wants frizz, especially when showcasing long hair! Fortunately, there is a simple solution to calm the frizz down. My advice would be to use Pantene Pro-V Extra Straight/Extra Liso Comb-in-Cream. This extra creamy leave-in formula delivers moisture to the hair leaving it straighter-looking and virtually frizz free. Make sure you comb in with a wide tooth comb while your hair is still damp. Again, your styling should start in the shower with the right shampoo and conditioner. Pantene has several different lines that could be good for your hair. Try the Pantene Pro-V Anti-Frizz and Conditioner, or Pantene Pro-V Extra Straight Shampoo and Conditioner to help fight the frizz and make your hair radiantly straight. If you are looking to grow your hair longer, you should try the new Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner which will help you grow your hair longer by helping to prevent breakage. The goal here is to say goodbye to frizz, hello to sleek, and straight beautiful hair!

3. I have straight hair, very fine but I have a lot of hair. I´ve been using my hair dryer for years to style my hair, so now if I don´t use it my hair frizzes or waves… I would love to have my natural straight hair as I did 10 years ago… Is there a product I can use the days I don´t want to use my hair dryer, so my hair will look nicely straight?

So many women today are trapped using heating products, such as hair-dyers, day in and day out. While these tools are great for achieving certain styles, they can potentially cause damage if used incorrectly. Everyone needs a break every once in a while! I would start by using Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Shampoo and Conditioner on a daily basis. This treatment will deeply clean your hair with its powerful formula, restoring moisture back into your hair leaving it strong, hydrated, and healthy looking. The conditioner is especially good for fighting off frizz because it will instantly smooth out your hair, getting rid of unruly fly-aways. Now that you have the frizz under control, I suggest using Pantene Pro-V Extra Straight/Extra Liso Comb-in-Cream that I mention above to complete your straight, frizz-free style without the blow-dryer. Congrats to you for giving your hair a much needed vacation from the heat!

Toni Tallarico
4. I’m Italian and I have long thick black frizzy hair. My hair is one length, half way down my back. All I want is straight long hair. What products should I use to stop it from being so frizzy? And at night time it’s the worst. Should I sure different products at night? Thank you.

The key to taming that frizzy hair is starting with the right shampoo and conditioner to make sure your hair is in tip top shape. You are never going to change the genetics of your hair texture, but you can definitely treat yourself and your style by using Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Shampoo & Conditioner, as I mentioned above. To really solidify the straight hair look you desire I advise using Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Ultra-Smoothing Balm. It will help smooth down your hair to create a straight, silky and, most importantly, frizz-free style when you style. You say that nighttime is the worst for your frizzy hair, and I want to stress how important it is to make sure your hair is moisturized and strong enough to defend off any incoming frizziness. Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Time Renewal Mask will do just that, giving your hair a deep, moisturizing treatment that works immediately to help hair feel soft, smooth and glossy. Use the mask at night after shampooing and conditioning, leave in your hair for a few minutes so it can absorb the treatment, and rinse out for a whole new outlook on straight, no-frizz hair!

5. What products works best without hair damage to straighten my colored treated hair?

As a lot of women can attest to, color treated hair is very sensitive and needs to be properly taken care of so it doesn’t fade away or lose its vibrancy. As I mentioned above, start with the Expressions line for shampoo and conditioner. One of my favorite products is the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Breakage Defense Strengthening Spray. I call it my “miracle water” and I use it on almost every head of hair I touch. You want to use it before you begin straightening in order to protect your hair and add a little bit of luster. The spray will improve the strength of your hair, giving it more power to withstand the damaging effects of straightening tools, leaving hair silkier, shinier and smoother than before. It’s always good to know safe straightening techniques, so make sure you don’t have your straightener too hot; setting it on a low to medium power should suffice for any hair type. If you blow-dry your hair straight, make sure to point the nozzle downward so it doesn’t blow up little pieces of hair that can cause frizz. If your blow-dryer has a cool blast capacity, use it every once in a while so it can cool the hair when straightening instead of causing breakage through intense heat.

Sylvia
6. My hair is straight, very fine and is always frizzy and dull looking. My hair is a combination of oily on the roots and a bit dry on the ends. I live in PR where the climate is extremely humid. I’ve tried lots of products that “promise” straight frizzy free hair, but they have done nothing for my hair. Is there a product out there that can make a huge difference in my hair? Thanks.

I know just the products to help with your humid hair predicament, Sylvia. First I would suggest using Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Extra-Strength Serum. This extra strength formula provides the ultimate frizz control for rebellious, frizzy hair and is a great formula to use on fine hair. This serum is lightweight, so it won’t hold you hair down. Rather, it will help seal out that crazy, Puerto Rico humidity! I’ve seen this product instantly transform frizzy hair into soft, silky, shiny hair so give it a try! Next, just because you have straight hair doesn’t mean it has to be dull looking. After using the Extra-Strength Serum and seeing how miraculously it works to create a super straight, frizz-free look on your hair, apply Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray to lock in your straight style. Apply generously when needed, as it provides long lasting flexible hold even in high humidity conditions. As an added bonus, this hairspray also keeps hair bouncy, giving it some extra oomph for an all-day hold. No need to let humidity bog you down!

Denise Rikard
7. I flat iron my hair straight after blowing it dry. My hair is also colored blonde. I have a problem with it either looking frizzy on the ends or too flat all over lifeless). I would love to have silky, shiny hair like I see on celebrities on talk shows (jennifer Anniston)as well as some soap stars. What products are the secret to getting that look?

Just because you’re not a celebrity doesn’t mean you can’t have hair that looks like you’re a Hollywood star! It’s tough for hair to withstand all the heating products we throw at them on a daily basis, but here is what I would recommend to keep your hair healthy, while creating shine and taming the frizz. As I mentioned before, find that right shampoo and conditioner for you. Color treated hair needs some extra care, so make sure your giving your hair what it needs. For styling, try a serum that adds shine. I love the Pantene Pro-V Smooth Serum. It will instantly smooth out dry, frizz-prone hair while adding shine in all the right places. This serum magically creates smooth and glossy hair when blow-drying straight, adding extra protection against damaging heat products such as your flat iron. When you showcase your new and improved glossy hair all I have to say is Jennifer Aniston, watch out!

Heather
8. My hair is thin and very straight. It will not even take a perm! My face is sort of narrow and I have a large forehead. What is the best style for me and what products can help but not hurt my hair?

Thanks for your question Heather. It seems to me you need a little more volume. Stay tuned in two weeks when I’ll provide your step by step styling regime on our Volume focused blog.

Tina Lorenz
9. My hairstylist asked me not to use Pantene at least a week before I have my hair colored. Something about wax build up…Is this true because I love Pantene.

Thank you for asking me this question. I hope I can clear up this misconception. Pantene Pro-V has been a leading hair care brand for more than 60 years and started out as a product that was exclusively sold in salons. Pantene is actually best known for shampoo and conditioner systems that contain the signature ingredient Vitamin B5 (Panthenol), a moisturizing agent. These products also help repair and prevent damage. Personally I have been using Pantene products since I began my career as a celebrity stylist. Once I discovered the true effects of the products I never looked back. Every stylist has their favorite regime they follow, but Pantene has always been my favorite and I would never promote a product that I do not believe in. I hope that his helps you understand my perspective, let me know if you have any further questions.

· Curl Defining Spray Gel
· Curl Defining Scrunching Mousse
· Curls Shaper Anti-Frizz Crème

Read on for Danilo’s answers:

  1. Alexis & Briana:
Alexis: Q: How do you make curly hair curl better? Some days my hair gets big bouncy curls and other days, it lies flat?
Briana: Q: How do you make big curls out of flat wavy hair?
A: First and foremost, 40%-50% of desired curl pattern can be achieved by using the best hair regime for your style needs. Pantene Pro-V Curls Shampoo and Conditioner not only enhance your hair’s natural curl pattern, but also control frizz. When moving into drying I like to use an anti frizz serum or crème depending on hair density and texture. The Pantene Pro-V Frizz Control Extra Strength Serum is excellent for stronger, heavier hair, while the Restoratives Anti-Frizz Crème is good for all hair types including medium to fine hair. Both products are best initially applied to damp/towel dried hair, then combed and/or brushed through.
For extra form and hold a curl mousse like the Pantene Pro-V Curl Defining Scrunching Mousse provides a great styling finish with frizz free curl formation that can be scrunched or combed in.
  2. Julie
Q: I was wondering how you revive curls after a long day at work and you’re heading out for the night? Mine always seems to go flat.
A: The most important thing is to start with the right foundation, meaning the shampoo and conditioner you use.
If you want to bump up your flat wave after a long day at work, my advice would be to use an iron and my favorite styler, the Pantene Restoratives Anti-Frizz Crème. This styler takes the day out and puts the night in, which is just what you are looking for! If you have a loose wave after a day of wear, and you want more, take a medium iron or medium to large rollers and create a mixed curl look. Spiral set the rollers to create a more casual look.
  3. Nicole D. & Caitlin (WINNER OF PRIZE BASKET!)
Nicole Q: I have small curls (and very fine hair) that often frizz and come out looking a bit triangle-like on my head. What are some ways (and products) I can work product into my hair without weighing down the roots and getting enough coverage on the ends?
Caitlin: Q: My hair has a few natural (tight) curls when wet, but if i try to rock them after it dries — it just ends up being a big frizzy mess. I don’t know what products are best to use. Help!
A: For starters there is nothing like added moisture to perk up a wave or curl. Pantene Pro-V Curl shampoo and conditioner products improve curl texture at the wet stage while the Pantene Pro-V Curl Shaper Anti-Frizz Crème and Pantene Curl Defining Mousse are excellent for curl form. These styling products provide you with less time fussing, less stress, and better results. Moisturizing products are key!
  4. Jane
Q: I have very long curly hair that I often throw up into a pony tail. What’s the best way to keep my hair off my neck without causing damage and breakage?
A: The best way to protect hair from damage and breakage is by using a restoratives line like the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Breakage Defense Collection. The Breakage Defense Spray adds luster and protects your hair from styling damage by creating a strong base. The Detangling Leave-in Crème is also helpful for locking in moisture and protecting hair from breakage caused by combing and brushing. For the best results, I recommend applying both of these products to hair after washing and before styling.
My favorite way to keep hair off of your neck is with a high-style, sleek ponytail. As I suggested above, you must apply a Restoratives Breakage Defense Spray and Crème to protect strands from breakage. After you apply a styling crème to damp hair, blow-dry hair straight with a paddle brush. After drying, pull hair back into a ponytail and secure. Add a little more crème to the ends of hair to protect from frizz and go over with a blow-dryer one more time for an ultra-smooth finish.
  5. Linda
Q: I have neither straight, curly, nor wavy hair - it’s a frizzy mixture of all three! I want a great wavy look for night? Any suggestions?
A: The first secret to loose flowing, defined curls has to do with your curl source size. Try using an iron or medium to large rollers which create a loose wave. The next concern is the manner in which curls are wrapped around the rollers or iron. Try using a “spiral set” technique (the correct term for wrapping hair around the length of the heat source). To enhance the setting effort, use a mist of Volume Aerosol Hairspray.
  6. Lauren B.
Q: I have straight, straight, straight hair and I really, really, really want beachy waves. Anything I’ve tried falls flat! Help! I want this to be my summer ‘do!
A: Straight hair will generally reshape best going wet to dry. It’s at the straight dry stage you are challenged by the already dried in straight finish. Setting wet hair under a dryer can be a whole new experience when coupled with state of the art products and equipment.
Otherwise when setting dry straight hair, one not only needs to re-shape with a medium size roller or iron, but it is also imperative that the hair cools completely in its new shape to ensure that the pattern sets and that there is no wilt or sag. On the work set sometimes I double set the hair to really get it in there.
For you, I highly recommend towel drying wet hair and applying leave in detangling lotion or the Pantene Restoratives Breakage Defense formula. After the leave in spray, wrap the hair with a medium roller or iron. Complete by misting each wrap with Pantene Pro-V Volume Aerosol hairspray for support and let your hair completely cool in its new shape.
  7. Krista
Q: I had beautiful natural curls and like an idiot I put a relaxer in my hair. Most of my curls have come back but there are sections of it that refuse to curl. How can I get my natural curl back?
A: First and foremost understand what you’ve used on your hair. Mild relaxers over time can allow natural movement to bounce back in since your hair wasn
