On Shelves Soon: Chanel Robertson Boulevard Nail Colour Collection

In celebration of the opening of their newest Los Angeles boutique, CHANEL will launch a special capsule color collection named after its swanky location: Robertson Boulevard.

Chanel Robertson Boulevard Nail Colour Collection

California ease, hipster cool, and true luxury intersect at Los Angeles’ hottest shopping spot, Robertson Boulevard. May 2008 brings a brand new reason to hit the block: the opening of the sparkling new Robertson Boulevard CHANEL boutique. To celebrate the occasion, Peter Philips, the new Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup, has designed four limited-edition must-have nail colours, which will be exclusively available in-store.

This mini-collection of graphic, pop-art shades was inspired by the spirit of Robertson Boulevard itself, a young Hollywood hangout now famous for shopping sprees and see-and-be-seen lunch spots such as The Ivy. Just as Robertson offers a signature blend of trendiness and haute exclusivity, these nail colours are fresh, eclectic, fun — bright as a cloudless California day, and perfect for a destination where every shopper feels like a star.

MELROSE: A fun, hot pink destined to become spring’s must-have pedicure
RODEO DRIVE: A purple splash: girl power meets the power lunch
L.A. SUNRISE: A primary yellow as bright and cheerful as its name
L.A. SUNSET: A warm tangerine — just the thing for an afternoon shopping splurge

Price: $25.00

Available exclusively in-store at the Robertson Boulevard CHANEL Boutique beginning May 30th, 2008, on CHANEL.com in July 2008, or call 1.800.550.0005.

5 Signs of a BAD Manicure

Raise your hand if you’ve ever popped into an obscure nail salon in hopes of getting a quick, top-quality manicure at a ridiculously cheap price, only to be left disappointed with less-than-stellar results… Yeah, it’s happened to all of us.

manicure

Meet Nicole Dinh, a manicurist to the stars (Christina Aguilera and Dayna Devon, host of Extra TV show); she shares five signs of a bad manicure. While sometimes you may not notice manicure mishaps immediately, closely check your nails next time to see - it may be time to change nail salons.

1. Poor shape of nails.

Solution: Your hand size and nail bed should be assessed first, then shaped according to their size and proportion.

2. Ragged cuticles or hang nails.

Solution: Hang nails should be gently trimmed, never pulled on with cuticle nippers. The cuticle base should never be cut, only trimmed where there is excess skin.

3. Unfinished nail edge.

Solution: When filing natural nails, always use a fine emery board. Emery boards should be appropriate to the specific nail type, either fine quality for natural nails or coarse texture for artificial nails.

4. Poor polish color quality and application.

Solution: make sure your manicurist exercises proper technique to paint the nails, so that the nail bed is completely covered; the nail bed should not be visible on the sides of the nail. Only professional quality nail polish should be used in order to prevent streaking and/or uneven color texture.

5. Chipped polish the day after.

Solution: Nails should always be cleaned before polish is applied and a professional quality base coat should always be used. Manicures that incorporate proper tools, professional quality products and appropriate techniques typically last at least one week.

For more information about Nicole Dinh or the Nelson J Salon (350 N. Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills), please call 310.274.1553 or visit the website at www.nelsonjbeauty.com.

Straight Talk About Nails

Fashion designers in the know (from NYC to Paris to London to Milan) trust their model’s nails to CND (formerly Creative Nail Design) and their chief nail stylist, Roxanne Valinoti. I had a moment to chat with her before the madness, better known as NY Fashion Week, began. Read on to see what she shares about healthy nails:

Healthy Manicure

1. How often should women get a manicure? How often is too much?
Getting a manicure once a week or bi-monthly is enough. Any more than once a week is too often because the removal of enamel can have a drying effect on the nails.

2. What makes polish chip?
There are many different reasons why enamels chip. It can depend on anything from the nail polish formulation, to the natural nail itself. If the natural nail is dry and delaminated, enamel will quickly peel away. Everyday activity can wreak havoc on nails too. Always wear gloves when you can and treat nails as “jewels, not tools”.
A good base coat followed by 2 coats of enamel and topcoat should allow 5-7 days of chip proof nails.

3. Any special tips to keeping manicures lasting as long as possible?
The best way to keep polish lasting the longest is to:
1. Lightly buff the surface of the natural nail with a soft file to remove surface oils.
2. Dehydrate by scubbing the nail with cotton and an acetone based cleanser
3. Always use a base coat. Base coats are designed to anchor nail enamel to the base for longer wearability. I love CND Sticky base coat because it stays sticky until you apply enamel to it.

4. What is the best way to combat dry, chapped winter hands?
Always wear gloves when going out into the cold. The extreme temperature changes can deplete skin of moisture.

5. What is your favorite brand of polish?
CND, of course. They use the highest quality ingredients and it has a very nice viscosity that allows me to use the entire bottle without it becoming thick. The colors are very fashion forward and are a fashion statement of their own.

6. How can women keep their nails super strong?
First, you need to know that super strong nails don’t necessarily mean that they will not break. Nail strength should be a combination of toughness and flexibility. If they are too super hard they will be brittle and crack. Keeping nails coated is the best thing to do, whether it be nail enamel or a professional coating like gel or liquid and powder. This will hold in the natural oils and keep nails from losing moisture. Always apply a good cuticle oil daily to keep the nail flexible, and prevent cracking and delamination. I recommend Solar Oil, particularly for its penetrating ability.

7. What are things women should look out for when choosing a nail salon?
First and foremost - - Salon Wellness. Make sure the salon is clean. Look to make sure they wash their hands before each service and are disinfecting tables and metal implements between use. Customized Client Service is always important as well. Make sure you can communicate your needs properly and are serviced by a well educated professional - - this should be standard in any salon.

8. What are some of the hottest colors for this upcoming spring/summer season?
Spring / Summer is defined by transparent and candy colored see-throughs. Sheer pinks and blues are perfect for fingers, while bright pinks, corals and oranges look great on toes.

9. The skin on hands tends to age more rapidly, how do you keep younger looking hands?
The hands can sometimes tell a woman’s age more than her face! Exfoliation is just as important on the hands as it is on the face. This will keep skin looking fresh. Always follow with a good moisturizer. If you are going outside, it is important to apply sunscreen.

10. What is your favorite manicured look? (nude vs. color, long vs. short, oval vs. square, etc)
Personally, I love the nails to look as natural they can. I love longer oval nails that look feminine. Unfortunately I don’t have great nails, so I create them by using Gel. That keeps them shaped perfectly and keeps them protected.

11. The machinery that is used in nail salons is said to be dangerous to the nails and hands; Is this true?
Nothing is dangerous if used properly. All chemicals and tools can be used safely with the proper education.

12. Are the cuticles supposed to be clipped or pushed back?
Eponychium is the term for the skin we commonly refer to as “cuticle.” This thin skin is living and should not be cut to prevent infection to the matrix. Cutting also promotes more skin growth, creating a harder callused “cuticle”. True cuticle is actually dead skin cells that are usually found stuck to the nail plate and can interfere with the enamel adhering smoothly. If you get a hang nail or dry skin tab, it’s ok to cut. Follow up with a treatment that will repair damaged skin, like Rejuvenator which has copper peptides. Pushing the cuticle back is easy to do. In the shower when the skin is moist, use a washcloth to gently push back your cuticles and use an AHA cream, like Cuticle Eraser, daily to micro exfoliate dry skin and hangnails.

13. What are the best ways to keeping your feet in shape during the winter without getting a pedicure?
Keep dry heels exfoliated daily with a foot file in the shower. At night slather on Cucumber Heel Therapy which will aid in the repair of dry, cracked skin.

14. What’s the best way to deal with nail fungus issues?
Always refer to a professional medical practitioner, podiatrist or dermatologist.

I. Am. Obsessed. OBSESSED!

I spotted this at my girl Susan’s blog: My Fashionation, and I simply couldn’t resist sharing with my GLAMonista’s…

Well, this totally blows Lee Press On-Nails out of the water!

Technically, they’re fingertip rings - Bijules Serpent Rings, but I think they’d be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FLY as fake nails! I’m trying my hardest to get my paws on a set of these:

From Black to Blue

Blue Crush! Fashionistas in the know (present company included) are getting ‘blues clues’… GlamBlush translation: We’re now painting our nails a daring blue hue. From cobalt, to navy, to cerulean, to sapphire, to indigo, it’s just as edgy & mysterious as black, but a tad bit softer.

Blue Nail Polish

Here, a description of my five favorite blue hues:

1. Essie in Aruba Blue, $7, a matte sapphire blue.
2. Rimmel Play Fast Quick Dry Nail Polish in Night Before, $4, a metallic indigo.
3. N.Y.C. Long Wearing Nail Polish in Skin Tight Denim Crème, $1, a shiny royal blue.
4. Duri Cosmetics in Encore, $5, a deep navy blue.
5. O.P.I. in Russian Navy, $7, a dark indigo.

Fall Nail Trends from Creative Nail Design

ICYDK, Creative Nail Design runs fashion week when it comes to nails. Not just in NYC, but also London, Paris, Sydney, and even Dubai! I had a chance to chat up Roxanne Valinoti, Lead Nail Stylist for CND. Here’s what she’s reporting are the nail trends for Fall 2007:

Shades of Grey

“For Giles Deacon our UK team customized this cream charcoal grey by mixing Black “voodoo” enamel, and white “cream puff” enamel together. This trend is a favorite for fall, because nails stay dark, sleek and rich like fine knits and cashmere, but not black and ‘goth’.”

Creative Nail Design

Au Natural

“Going natural doesn’t have to be bare. Grooming matters most, paying attention to detail , like clean cuticles and smooth edges. The newest neutral can be customized to match the skin tone. Serenity is a popular color because its warm nude tone has a bit of coverage. My favorite bare essential is a coat of Ridge Out base coat with one coat of Serenity and one coat of Air Dry.”

aunatural_nailtrends.jpg

Red, Red, Red

“Red is the ultimate classic nail. Finding the right shade of red is the trick to wearing it well. Cooler skin tones look best with a blue based red. Warmer skin tones wear orange reds better. This schock of color on the nails is a classic tell tale sign of feminism. Make sure it’s never chipped and always shiny.”

red_nailtrends.jpg
Purple Reign

“Wearing deep velvet purples, like Rock Royalty is similar to the dark trend we saw last fall, but again much more regal, rich and pigmented. It’s a sophisticated way to wear a darker color.”

purple_nailtrends.jpg

Gold Rush

“Metallics have been strong in nail enamels, for the past few seasons and will continue throughout fall. However, this season’s metallics are infused with black and copper so they are deeper and more wearable. Try a metallic instead of a white tip for a French manicure.”

Get the Fall 2007 Look: Makeup for Women of Color

Think Roaring ’20s and Great Gatsby. Whether you’re African, Caribbean, Black, Latina, Asian, Arab, or even a Caucasian chick with an ill tan, here’s everything you’ll need to keep up with four of the hottest beauty trends of the season.

1. Dewy skin looks drab. Oddly enough, flat flawless skin is in.

If you have a HONEY hue, try Full Coverage Foundation in NW35 from M.A.C. ($27, maccosmetics.com).

If you have a CHESTNUT complexion, try i.d. bareMinerals SPF Foundation in Warm Deep from Bare Escentuals ($25, Ulta.com).

If you have COFFEE-color skin, try the Oil-Free Moisturizing Makeup in True Ebony from the Cover Girl Queen Collection ($7.49, CoverGirl.com).

2. Give up the gloss. Trade in the nude shine for matte lips in all shades of rich red.

If you have a HONEY hue, try Balanced Matte Lipstick in Great Australian Bright from Sue Devitt ($20, Ulta.com).

If you have a CHESTNUT complexion, Colour Riche in Spice from L’Oréal ($7.19, Ulta.com).

If you have COFFEE-color skin, try HIP Lipstick in Extrovert from L’Oreal ($10, Ulta.com).

How to be a ‘Sole Survivor’

Here’s a tip: simply do your pedicure yourself, as a yucky bacteria infection is just NOT glam! Granted, I may be a bit of a hypocrite since I do enjoy a good mani/pedi session, but I must admit I’ve always been weary of nail salons, as you never really know how well they’re cleaning their tools and footbath. I’ve spied the nail technicians placing nail kits in the infrared incubator that’s “supposed” to disinfect and ward off bacteria, but who really knows just how clean their tools are?

According to The Beauty Brains (which has a fabulous in-depth article on how to avoid pesky pedicure infections), pedicure chairs with an attached footbath are most likely more contaminated than you’d think… That’s a HUGE problem for me, especially since 99.9% of Manhattan nail salons have fancy hi-tech pedicure chairs (with the footbath attached obviously).

From now on, I pledge to do my own pedicures. Well, a modified pledge, meaning if I have the time and the patience, as I’ve never mastered the art of polishing my own toenails. Nevertheless, I’ve assembled my own pedicure kit:

pedicure_glam-blush.jpg

1. I clip and file my toenails, then place my feet into my footbath full of warm water and a few drops of tea tree oil.

2. This may sound a little unorthodox, but I wear flats and flip-flops on a daily basis, and I walk ALL THE TIME, so my heels are a bit rougher than I’d like to admit. After I’ve soaked my feet in warm water, I just glide a brand-new razor over my heels ever-so-gently to remove the top layer of dry, rough skin.

3. Bliss Hot Salt Scrub is an excellent follow-up exfoliator – perfect for smoothing my entire foot.

4. After I’ve allowed my feet to air-dry, I follow up with Curel® Targeted Therapy™ Deep-Penetrating Foot Cream. It’s a super intense moisturizer that’s incredibly nourishing (it contains vitamin E and shea butter), and better yet, it has anti-bacterial agents! (P.S. Here’s a tip from Curel expert Dr. Berson: “Apply it at night and then put on a pair of socks to lock in moisture. This should be done EVERY night during the summer, not just when feet look rough and dry. And make sure to use 100% cotton socks as they trap moisture better while still allowing your skin to breathe.”

BONUS: Lastly, I grab the vampiest bottle of polish I can find (Voodoo by Creative Nail Design is my favorite), and I try my very best not to paint my skin! Oh, and I can’t forget Stickey by Creative Nail Design (base coat) and Super Shiney by Creative Nail Design (top coat).

creative-nail-design.jpg

Voila! A salon-worthy pedicure in the comfort of my own home.
