Go Deep…

… if you’re going to wear a side part in your hair. Whether you’re sweeping your hair off of your face completely like Katie Holmes, or just tucking a piece behind your ear like Jessica Simpson, the trick to perfecting this look is to part your hair all the way to the crown. The deeper the side-part, the better!

Fight Back Against Frizz!

Frizzy Hair

Spring showers might bring May flowers, but they also bring frizzy hair that’s out to there! If your hair keeps getting bigger and bigger, and you don’t know what to do, try out one of these three anti-frizz products. Just choose the formula that’s right for you! (And your hair type of course.)

Frizz Fighters

1. Nexxus Sleek Style Calming Smoothing Crème
This crème seems heavy at first, but after you work it through damp hair and blow dry (preferably with a nozzle or diffuser), it feels so lightweight that you can use it on thick or fine hair. The nutrients – silk amino acids, avocado oil, nourishing botanicals, and anti-oxidant vitamins – will strengthen the hair while moisturizing it, so frizz fades fast. As an added bonus, it contains UVA and UVB blockers, so the sun can’t suck out all the moisture you just put in.

2. Bumble and Bumble Defrizz
Perfect for curly and other frizz-prone hair, this serum creates a barrier between your hair and any humidity to keep hair soft and manageable. Smooth it on when hair is damp or dry, and keep adding more to touch up during the day depending on your level of frizziness. The clear gel-like substance looks like it would be sticky, but it actually leaves your hands feeling velvety smooth and hair looking shinier than ever, thanks to two types of silicone.

3. Profound Beauty HUSH Frizz Zero Spray
Use this spray on damp hair to create a flyaway-free foundation for the rest of your styling routine. Good for all hair types, HUSH Frizz Zero Spray helps makes blow drying easier since your hair dries ready to style. Whether you have naturally frizzy hair or it’s from humidity interference, the spray’s Amino-Fusion complex technology finds the strands that will frizz the fastest, and corrects them before they get out of control.

Visit Nexxus, Bumble & Bumble, and Profound Beauty online for more deets.

Reader’s Question: How to Style Your Hair After 60

Beautiful Over 60

I’m always touched when I receive a heartfelt beauty question that’s actually genuine, instead of pompous. Read on, and you’ll see why I jumped at the chance to help Beverly H., a mature GlamBlush fan with her urgent hair dilemma:

beverly-hale.jpgbeverly-hale.jpgbeverly-hale.jpgbeverly-hale.jpgbeverly-hale.jpg“I am over 60, graying, have a pale pink complexion, green eyes, short hair. Desperately need some help. Should I be coloring my hair? What about lengthening it with extensions?”

I enlisted one of my favorite hair know-it-all’s, Shane M. of the Chris Chase Salon here in Manhattan. Here’s what he had to say:

“Coloring your hair is a great way to make yourself look and feel a little younger. I think you would look incredible as warm blonde, golden blonde, or even a very light coppery blonde. Be careful with strawberry blonde - some strawberry tones have too much pink in them and that will make you look monotone and washed-out.

Hair extensions are fun for a while, but they require maintenance, and on fine or medium-fine hair, extensions easily and quickly slip away from the root. I am not a fan of them on most women unless they are willing to spend extra time and really care for them, keep them up, which could get expensive. A new color might make you think twice – it could be just the change you are looking for!”

Get Carrie Bradshaw’s Gorgeous Waves

Of course she’s known for her addiction to Mr. Big and expensive shoes, but when we think of Carrie Bradshaw, we tend to think about her fabulous mane.

Carrie Bradshaw Hair

In anticipation of the New York premiere of the Sex and The City movie, curl expert Ouidad shares simple steps on how to get gorgeous waves like Carrie Bradshaw.

Sexy Carrie Bradshaw Hair

1. After shampooing and conditioning your hair, leave about 25% of the conditioner in your hair. Apply styling lotion in fatter sections (about 2 inches wide and 2 inches thick) so you are able to create bigger waves, and perform the Ouidad Rake & Shake method.

2. Be sure to apply the styling lotion evenly working your way all the way up to the top of the head.

3. When you get to the top, create a side part.

4. Next, take the side part section, apply styling lotion and create a wave pattern with the Ouidad Rake & Shake method.

5. Be careful not to rake too much or you will create too much bounce.

6. Allow hair to set. Once it is set, gently diffuse the hair, without placing hair in the diffuser, or again you will be creating too much bounce.

7. Once hair is completely dry, apply a pomade such as Ouidad Clear Control Pomade by rubbing your palms together, pulling hair into a mock ponytail and running your hands through. For the final touch, add a dollop of pomade at the top of the head to smooth any flyaways.

8. Get ready to turn heads with your sexy ‘do!

Get the Locks Look: Naomi Watts

Is that you, Marilyn Monroe? Wearing the iconic white halter dress and racy red lips, it was the softly culred blonde coif that set tongues wagging about the Naomi Watt’s dressing up as Marilyn as her hero for the Costume Institute Gala.

(Sidenote: Do you think Marilyn Monroe was a superhero? I do!)

Luden Henriquez, stylist at the Rita Hazan Salon in Manhattan shares his thoughts, and tips on how to recreate her look.

Naomi Watts

Says Luden: She’s definitely going for the Old Hollywood/glamour girl look with the white dress and hairstyle. To achieve Naomi Watt’s look, follow these simple steps:

1) Blowdry hair with a round brush.
2) Set dry hair in hot rollers, the larger ones on the top of the head, with the smaller ones on the sides and on the back of the head. Leave curlers in for 10-15 minutes, which allows them to cool.
3) Spray hair with a strong-hold hairspray, and remove the curlers.
4) Brush the top of the hair so that it is smoother around the face and on the top of the head. 5) Use fingers to tousle the curls, and spray again with hairspray to set the hair. All done!

Get the Locks Look: Thandie Newton

While the Run, Fatboy, Run star donned a dramatic Chanel dress to the gala, she opted for a simple, demure hairstyle: the ever-classic chignon.

Luden Henriquez, stylist at the Rita Hazan Salon in Manhattan shares his thoughts, and tips on how to recreate her look.

Thandie Newton Met Ball

Says Luden: There is a lot going on with Thandie Newton’s dress; the lace… the cut… it’s edgy, yet still feminine. Her sleek, elegant updo balances out her look. Get her classic look at home by following this quick four short steps:

1) Start with blowdrying the hair so that it is smooth and fully dry.
2) Brush the hair back with a flat, boar bristle brush. Gather hair into a high ponytail, and secure with a rubber band.
3) Twirl hair around the rubber band, to form a bun.
4) Secure the bun with hairpins, and spray your hair with a hairspray to prevent frizz and unruly flyaways.

Rita Hazan: 10 Rules for Being a Brunette

Jennifer Lopez Anne Hathaway

1. Make sure your shade is not too dark for your skin tone, nor too light.

2. I like brunettes to have some warmth - not red! It should be rich and I like to add gold tones, otherwise it looks dull.

3. I recommend getting a few highlights to break the color up, this way it doesn’t look dense or like a wig.

4. Make sure you keep your locks hydrated and healthy, use a shampoo and conditioner that say “hydrating” on them.

5. If you have any grey and color every two weeks, try to lighten up your color by a shade or two or get highlights around the hairline.

6. If you’re a natural brunette and are starting to get grey, you have a few options:
a. Cover it completely with a permanent dye.
b. If you don’t want to color you hair with a full single process, just get a few highlights. This will help blend and camouflage the few grays that you do have.
c. For something less harsh, you can use a vegetable dye if you have limited grey.

7. Brunettes can look exotic in a world of many blondes! So if you’re looking for a change and your blonde, use a vegetable or semi-permanent dye. This will keep your hair healthy and shiny.

8. Make sure you wear the right makeup for your skin tone; otherwise you may look washed out. Sandy Linter, makeup artist extraordinaire at my salon (and who’s taught me a thing or two on having a flawless face), says that brunettes should “make sure they wear the right makeup for their skin tone, otherwise they may look washed out. A key factor with brunettes is having beautiful brows - do not over-pluck! Brows are really noticed on brunettes.

9. When you go into the sun, make sure you use products with SPF in them. Brown hair tends to fade very fast and can get orangey or brassy in the sun.

10. If you feel like your hair always turns brassy, I suggest going one shade darker.

Blonde Ambition: Like Lily Allen’s New Look?

Blonde Lily Allen

British songstress Lily Allen debuted a new two-tone blonde hue a couple of weeks ago (just in time for summer), and it looks like she’s really dedicated to it. See - she’s already in the salon getting dipped and trimmed!

Blonde Lily Allen Getting Her Hair Done

My advice to little Miss Lily Allen: Try Philosophy’s Shear Splendor Anti-Aging Bio-Peptide Conditioner for Chemically Treated, Chronically Dry Hair, $22. Going blonde isn’t for the faint of heart, and often some girl’s manes can’t take the peroxide overload; this is the perfect blonde hair savior in a jar. It’s an intensive deep conditioner that should be used daily.

Philosophy Shear Splendor

BTW, Rita Hazan, GlamBlush’s resident hair expert, shares 10 Rules on Being a Beautiful Blonde.

Also, hey Lily! When is the new album coming out? I feel like Smile was released ages ago…

Ashley Javier Shares His Top Hair Tips for 2008

Super stylist Ashley Javier must be one busy man. An expert for Herbal Essences, and an in demand globetrotting hairstylist to the stars (he’s styled the manes of Nicole Richie, Avril Lavigne, and Chloë Sevigny), Ashley Javier still finds time to create cool coifs for the catwalk. (Shown in the photo below, he’s working his magic backstage at Sari Gueron Fall 2008 show during NY Fashion Week.)
Ashley Javier

Here’s Ashley Javier shares five trends and tips on how to get hot, haute hair for 2008:

1. Hair can be a sign of youth and vitality. So especially in winter – when our hair is dry and we’re using heat/styling tools on top of this – its important to take special care of your tips. They’ve been exposed to much more than your new growth, so they need the most love. A deep conditioner will help immensely.

2. Women today no longer feel compelled to cut their hair as they age; they can have long hair and still maintain a sophisticated, contemporary style. Add a few highlights around the face, just to frame and brighten it up. After all, long hair should be sophisticated – not like the cut you had when you were twelve! And with long hair, it’s even more important to take care of those ends. The Long Term Relationship product softens and protects hair for as long as you want. Try the Split End Protector, which can be used all throughout the day to protect hair during this dehydrating season.

3. Not everyone wants to go long. When it comes to a youthful style, cuts are going shorter with graphic lines. To compliment the bold hair cuts and shapes, women need to use haircolor to add texture and richness to their style. (Herbal Essences Color Me Vibrant has three new red shades and two new brunette shades that will give that rich, deep color.)

4. Dark colors are really a stunning accessory – they add contrast and provide a chic, stunning look. It’s not about a light blonde suddenly going black though – it’s about just going a couple shades darker for the season.

5. I tell all of my clients – with any color or style, maintenance is key to keep hair looking its youthful best. A good conditioner is really important, but a clear gloss will also give your hair a shiny boost.
