Blue Lagoon: A 10-Part Breakdown

I have a confession. Before I’d physically gotten here, I’d done extensive research on The Blue Lagoon, and for some odd reason, I just didn’t completely ‘get it’. I couldn’t really understand what, why, how… anything about this place. Little did I know, most visitors feel that way before their visit!

Blue Lagoon Iceland

Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. The Blue Lagoon is compromised of four entities; a resort, a clinic, a skincare collection, and a laboratory.
2. The resort is the biggest lifestyle destination spa in northern Europe, let alone on the island of Iceland. The geothermal water is totally natural! It’s heated from the porous lava based at the core of the earth, and it replenishes itself every 36 hours, so there’s no need for chlorinated chemicals - especially since there’s already a natural antiseptic within the water. Also, it’s chock full of good-for-you algae and silica.
3. The geothermal water here in Iceland is composed of 70% sea water, and 30% fresh water.
4. The clinic is best known for its positive rehabilitation work done with arthritis and psoriasis patients. (Some say a visit here is even good for battling acne and cellulite!) Over 3,000 patients from over 20 different countries have been successfully treated here.
5. The skincare collection was born out of demand from visitors who loved the beauty benefits of The Blue Lagoon, and wanted to maintain resuts at home. Comprised of over 20 different SKUs, the best sellers remain the silica mud and the algae & mineral body lotion.
6. The skincare collection is currently only available worldwide online and physically in Iceland, Scandanavia, and Germany. Plans to enter Saks Fifth Avenue in the states will commence in mid-April of this year. Yay!
7. The laboratory is dedicated to further developing Iceland’s already extensive knowledge about how nature and natural resources can contribute technologically to the advancement of the human society. Plenty of positive strides have been made, and the research continues!
8. By 2011, expect to add hotelier to the long list of Things to See at The Blue Lagoon. Plans for a luxury hotel are already underway.
9. Plenty of celebrities and political bigwigs have visited. Find out who HERE.
10. The mission of The Blue Lagoon is “Energy for Life Through Forces of Nature.”

P.S. Recently two key presidential candidates stopped by for a brief dip in the Blue Lagoon… Clinton & McCain. Obama, what’s up with that? Where are YOU?

Adventures in Reykjavik, Part One

Hi GLAMonistas!

Very sorry for the delay in posts, but I’ve been without internet, in the middle of nowhere (it’s relaxing, trust me) at this magical resort on the island of Iceland:

Blue Lagoon Iceland

I’ve been at the famous Blue Lagoon!

Picture this: The air is roughly 30°. The geothermal hot spring water - close to 90°. It sounds a bit weird, but it’s really, really cool. Stay tuned - more details TK shortly!

In the meantime, watch this quick vdeo to get a sense of what a day is like at The Blue Lagoon.

Guess Where I’m Headed…

Map of Iceland

I’m off to a fun five-day jaunt to Reykjavík, Iceland! Don’t worry, you can virtually come too - I’ll be dishing about the Icelandic culture (from a beauty standpoint), fantastic beauty products not available statesside, and I’ll chit-chat about my magical experience at The Blue Lagoon.

Bæbæ (that means Bless, the proper way to say goodbye in Iceland),

The Secret to French Beauty

When I was in Paris earlier this fall, while I was in awe of the Eiffel Tower, the Lourve, and the La Grande Roue, something else caught my eye - I couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous French women are!

No matter their native nationality, most seemed to follow the same sort of beauty theme, as they all ultimatley looked the same, just as gorgeous as the next: flawless skin, finely-lined eyes, lashes out to there, nude lips, wavy tresses, and the French woman’s M.O. - brow-skimming wispy bangs. I wanted to take photos of a few of the girls, but since I’m not The Sartorialist, I decided against it.

Fast forward to today. I found myself perusing French Vogue online, and I came across this photo of a model backstage before the Stella McCartney show this past October. It totally embodies the French gal’s beauty mantra. Minimalism at it’s finest.

UncoverTheCity.com

For visitors & newbies, the city of New York can be oh-so-overwhelming…. aside from hitting up the major tourist spots (Statue of Liberty/ Broadway/Times Square), you may not know where else to go, and what other attractions personify NYC.

Not sure what to do? You could A) Watch Sex and The City re-runs and follow the path that Carrie and Co. took after hours, or you could B) Buy a book and visit a few of the generic restaurants and clubs, or you could C) Simply visit UncoverTheCity.com.

I vote for option C. Here’s why:

Uncoverthecity.com surpasses the traditional interactive online experience. The journey begins with a choice of whether to “Take the Night by Storm” with the girls, “Meet the New Boyfriend”, or “Experience New York for the First Time.” With each option, one is transported to the authentic New York City locations of their choice, each accompanied by a fictional conversational narrative. The animated pages bring the city to life as traffic lights change, ambient music plays, cars streak by, and inhabitants peer from apartment windows, as each continued choice provides new twists and unexpected surprises.

Visitors can read text messages specific to each story line, listen to hot new music tracks, change the music to suit their mood and taste, view behind-the-scenes footage of the DKNY Delicious Night commercial, as well as exclusive information about hot NYC clubs, restaurants, shops and music.

I have to say, IT’S SUCH A CUTE SITE!!!! I’ve been a NYC resident for over 4 years, and even I didn’t know about a few of the hotspots highlighted on this site. I’m definitely obsessed… whatever mood I’m in, UncoverTheCity.com gives me a few options of places I can go… Love it!

And while you’re at it, be sure to check out DKNY’s newest scent, DKNY Delicious Night. It’s the perfect sweet-smelling scent to spritz on before you hit the haute streets of NYC!

Venus de Milo is One Hot Chick

I came across the Venus de Milo statue at the tail-end of my lengthy 9-hour tour of the Louvre, and I fell in love.
venusdemilo.jpg
While this truly is a magnificent work of art, and an important piece of classic Greek history – I have to admit, I could not stop looking at her hair! Someone please tell me – how does she have the best hair ever???
venusdemilocloseup.jpg
GLAMonistas, be advised: this is how waves are supposed to look. I repeat, this is how waves are supposed to look. Let Venus de Milo’s mane be your blueprint if you’re a fan of waves. Her waves are glorious. Marvelous. Splendid. I’d kill for waves like hers. Look at that detail… the curve of each wave is perfectly aligned with the curl of the next wave… which weaves in perfectly with the next wave… it’s just spectacular. Who knew sculptors paid that much attention to tress details over 2,000 years ago?
venusdemilohaircollage.jpg
I’m still in awe. I just felt the need to share.
