Rita Hazan: How to Transition Your Color Into Spring

Winter to Spring color

As the temperature starts to change from cold and dry to sunny and breezy, so should your hair. We do “spring cleaning” for our homes, change our clothing and alter our skincare regimen - why wouldn’t the same theory apply to our hair?

When it comes to color, it’s important to take it step by step, just as the weather does. You don’t see the temperature changing from 30 to 80 degrees, and as a rule, you should never color your hair from dark to light in one step, as drastic change like this can wreak havoc. It’s important to start now and slowly change your color for healthy, damage-free hair.

Keep in mind that spring trends are multi-dimensional color, tone-on-tone, a la blonde-on-blonde and brown-on-brown. For redheads, I suggest going for more of a strawberry shade that is one shade lighter than your natural color, rather than blonde.

If you follow these basic rules, achieving vibrant, healthy color will be effortless this spring.

xx, Rita Hazan

The Look du Jour: Heavy Metal Eyes + Light Lips

As celeb-obsessed as our culture is, we all know whatever Hollywood says pretty much goes. If this is any indication, it looks as if the racy red lip look is on it’s way out, and the subdued-but-still-sexy nude lip is set to take its place as the haute look for all Hollywood It girls, fashionistas, and everyone else in between.

Case in point: Just last week at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, trendsetters like Mary-Kate Olsen, Mischa Barton, and Paris Hilton were all spotted with nude lips softly played up with metallic eyes.

Paris Hilton

According to MAX Factor Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey (who kept Indie actresses Mena Suvari and Shoshonnah Stern looking red-carpet ready during the film festivities), ‘This look is popular because it draws attention to the eyes, the most glamorous part of the face. Nude lips naturally complement the more dramatic metallic eye, with a twist on modern glamour.’

Lucky for us, Bailey has graciously shared easy-to-follw tips on how to achieve this stunning look at home with MAX Factor products:

Step 1: Play up eyes using the MAX Factor Vivid Impact Eye Shadows in Two Cents.
-Apply the dark bronze end of the duo all over the eye lid, up to the crease,
-Follow by lining the eye lid with the gold end of the duo and then blending the two shades together for a multidimensional sheen.

Step 2: Finish the eye look by applying 3-4 coats of a dark black mascara to the upper and lower lashes.

Step 3: To complement the eye use a nude gloss for super shine with a hint of shimmer. (Bailey recommends MAXalicious Glaze Lip Gloss in Weekend Getaway or Champagne Bath).

BONUS: If you still want a hint of color on your lips, Bailey suggests you try one of the subtle pink/red-based glosses – the color will look very neutral which complements the metallic eye, but adds just a bit of extra drama.

Did Everyone Have the Same Makeup Artist - Or is There a New Trend Sweeping Tinseltown?

Sag Awards Makeup

Yup, I’m five days late posting on the SAG Awards, but hey - better late than never, I always say!

Moving on… Is it just me, or was the red carpet at last Sunday’s show lacking some serious beauty drama?

It looks as if everyone went for a girlish subdued look - maybe this year, less is more?

Someone Else Has Made the Cut…

Hollywood has truly gone snip happy this season. (What is it with the bob haircut this year?) Add Anne Hathaway to the long list of celebs who’ve decided to chop it all off!

Anne Hathaway Bob Haircut

Instead of an angular cut like Rihanna’s and Victoria Beckham’s, or perfect & precise like Katie Holmes’s, Anne Hathaway’s cut is a bit choppy, and decidedly undone. And you know what? I actually like it!

While her off-center part is a little jagged, and a few pieces look a little longer than the next, I can see what look she was going for when she opted for this cutesy cropped coif. I’ll call this look “shaggy chic.”

Anne Hathaway, you’ve been officially inducted into GlamBlush’s Haute Bob Club. Wear it well.

Rihanna Looks Ravishing with Red Lips

Looks like my ladylove Rihanna got the red-lip memo just in the nick of time at last week’s World Music Awards in Monaco. In mere moments, her makeup artist had turned up the va-va-voom factor on this gorgeous girl; between the time Rihanna had gotten out of her limo and when she hit the red carpet, she’d undergone a major makeup transformation; who knew a couple of coats of lipstick could do so much for one’s look?

Rihanna World Music Awards

Not that she looked bad before (seriously, how could she?), but that one addition turned her red carpet look from sophisticated to SIZZLING. I guess that age-old makeup mantra still holds true today - a lady should never step out in public without her lipstick!

From Black to Blue

Blue Crush! Fashionistas in the know (present company included) are getting ‘blues clues’… GlamBlush translation: We’re now painting our nails a daring blue hue. From cobalt, to navy, to cerulean, to sapphire, to indigo, it’s just as edgy & mysterious as black, but a tad bit softer.

Blue Nail Polish

Here, a description of my five favorite blue hues:

1. Essie in Aruba Blue, $7, a matte sapphire blue.
2. Rimmel Play Fast Quick Dry Nail Polish in Night Before, $4, a metallic indigo.
3. N.Y.C. Long Wearing Nail Polish in Skin Tight Denim Crème, $1, a shiny royal blue.
4. Duri Cosmetics in Encore, $5, a deep navy blue.
5. O.P.I. in Russian Navy, $7, a dark indigo.

Blushing Beauties

Recently I found myself strolling through a roll in my iPhoto library when I came across this photo:

jessicastamirinalazareanu.jpg

Taken backstage at Zac Posen in February 2007, lucky me – I got model BFF’s Jessica Stam and Irina Lazareanu to say cheese and actually give me the ever-rare-from-a-top-model-smile! Take a moment stare at the picture… do you see what I see? While Jessica’s piercing eyes or Irina’s full fringe could easily be the focal point of this image, I can’t seem to take my eyes off of their cheeks.

GlamBlush Tip of the Day: Put away your bronzer for a few months (don’t worry – a burnished face will be ALL THE RAGE come March); it’s time to break out the blush. When it’s freezing cold outside, a face with flushed cheeks looks warm, radiant, and healthy. Nothing’s worse than dull, drab winter skin… I’m just saying.

Back to the blush. My obsession du jour? Mounia by Nars. In the package, it’s a cinnamon red hue, but on my face, it looks like a natural light flush.

Tips from Ouidad: How to Get Flirty Curls

The girly-girl look is in for Spring 2008, and at the hairstyles at the Derek Lam fashion show displayed just that; a flirty bob (curled & pinned up) was the style of choice, and Ouidad (the Queen of curl and author of Curl Talk) shares her tips on how to take this look from the catwalk to the sidewalk.
derek-lam-hair.jpg

Here’s how to get the look:

-To get a bob, have your hair cut about three inches below the chin. This look can work for all hair types and lengths.

-After shampooing and conditioning your hair with Ouidad Clear & Gentle Shampoo and Balancing Rinse Conditioner, work Ouidad Climate Control Gel through your hair in sections to make sure the hair is coated with the gel.

-Then position your hair the desired part you wish, (Ouidad recommends a center part) and use duck clips at the roots to create volume.

-Diffuse your hair until it is dry. You can control the looseness or tightness of your wave by working your diffuser; the more you scrunch the tighter the hair and the less you scrunch the softer your wave will be.

-Complete the look with a touch of Ouidad Clear Control Pomade to smooth and define the ends.

Tips from Ouidad: How to Get Sporty Curls

The catwalk always gives birth to the newest trends and styles for celebrities and budding fashionistas alike. It seems as if the hairdo of choice on the catwalk for Spring 2008 was the loose tousled curl. Undone locks will be in come March, so Ouidad (the Queen of curls) tells us GLAMonistas how we can get the look!

At the Cynthia Rowley show, the look was a “Sporty (but) Stylish Tomboy.”

cynthia-rowley-hair.jpg

Heres how to take the look from “runway” to “realway”:

-Begin by shampooing and conditioning your hair with Ouidad Play Curl Shampoo and Conditioner.

-While the hair is still wet, spritz with Ouidad Botanical Boost to preserve the moisture.

-Follow by working Ouidad Tress F/X Gel throughout the hair

-Dry slightly with a blow dryer on medium heat and set your hair with medium heat rollers (Ouidad recommends Tourmaline Static Free Rollers). Set the top center row of the rollers going back all the way to the back of the head, and the sides of the head down.

-When the rollers have cooled, remove them from the hair.

-Apply Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum to your palms and run your hands all over the set hair.

-Then use a natural bristle brush and brush your hair gently for couple of minutes to relax the set.

-Using your fingers, part your hair in the center to allow the flow of the set (using a comb would cause the hair to fan out)

-Finish the look with a touch of Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum to flatten the roots.

I Predict a Celebrity Beauty Trend…

After seeing these pictures from last week’s star-studded Fashion Rocks event at Radio City Music Hall, I couldn’t help but notice the onslaught of heavily-lined eyes on the red carpet (keep in mind, this look was seen all over the catwalk in February - see HERE).

Guess I should pull out my favorite eyeliner: BADGal by Benefit.

Oh, by the way…
