An absolutely amazing book has just come across my desk, the coffee-table book, America at Home. Seriously, it arrived today and I can’t stop looking at it!
It’s actually a pretty cool collection of photos. So, Rick Smolan and Jennifer Erwitt (the two creators of the book) decided to apply a documentary approach to explore what the concept of home means to Americans today. To do that, they enlisted the help of professional photographers, journalists, writers… and tens of thousands of amateur photographers to document home life across America over the course of a single 7-day period.
All these images were submitted to a panel of leading magazine and newspaper photo editors who selected the final 250 images that make up this book. And I have to say, some of these images are just so amazing and insightful.
One of the coolest things about this book, is that you can customize the cover with one of your own images! You can buy this cofee-table book that stars YOU on the cover and then is filled with unique and touching photos from around the country. (Anyone looking for a good Mother’s Day gift?)
Anyway – I was so blown away by the book, I had to share. Here is the website — and here are some photos from the book to give you a little taste….

This book is truly absolutely outstanding – the quotes/facts have a great deal of impact and the photographs are poignant, contemplative – and beautiful. One of the best photography books I’ve experienced.

Love that little house on wheels! It is SO cute. Looks like she parked it in someone’s backyard! Can’t wait to check out the rest of the book.

This book is beautiful. I love Rick Smolan’s work. The photographs are always stunning and the custom cover idea is terrific. I am going to put my baby on the cover and give it to all the grandparents!

What a inspiring book. I love to see all the different ways people live. I guess I’m like most people and think the way I live is the norm. This book proves just the opposite. Hats off to the creators.
