Worth Watching: United States of Tara

If you didn’t tune into Showtime last night for the premiere of United States of Tara, I suggest finding someone who DVR’d it. It’s well worth your time. (I’m sure Showtime will also be repeating the premiere episode a few hundred times before next week.)

Toni Collette is a fabulous actress. (The Sixth Sense Little Miss Sunshine Muriel’s Wedding.) … And she’s probably one of the only actresses who could pull this role off so beautifully, comically, charmingly, and ridiculously. She stars as Tara, a mother and wife, who just happens to suffer from disassociate identity disorder (AKA multiple personality disorder). Her husband and children never know who they’re gonna get. Will they get even-tempered, loving Tara? Crazy teenybopper T? Or maybe sailor-mouthed trucker Buck?

The show is silly, cute, fun, and very poignant. At the heart of the show is a family that really sticks together despite adversity. Despite a troubled mother. A rebellious daughter. And a seriously unorthodox family-life.  I really think this show is goin’ places. I’m excited to keep watching and discover more “states” of Tara.

P.S. Oh and John Corbett (i.e. Aidan ala SATC) plays Tara’s hubby, Max. Love him.
