First Position Brings Ballet’s Best Young Talent Center Stage

Many young girls dream of becoming ballerinas – the beauty, the poise, and the costumes are enough to make many to hit the barre. But it takes a lot more discipline, sacrifice, and hard work to properly don a pair of toe shoes, especially if you’re just a kid. Directed by Bess Kargman, First Position follows six dancers from all walks of life, who devote their lives to the art of ballet, all in the hopes of making a career out of it through the world’s most prestigious ballet competition, the Youth America Grand Prix. Through bloodied feet, exhaustion, devastating injuries, and the angst of being a teenager, each must fight their way to the top to win scholarships and contracts and become professionals. The award-winning documentary showcases some of the most awe-inspiring and promising young ballet stars of the future and may have you looking for a pair of pointe shoes for yourself.
