Best Dressed: Weekly Wrap-Up

Some people and places—you know who I mean—like to dispel saucy criticism and harsh soundbites when reviewing celebrities’ sartorial escapades. Not so on this site. Afterall, what good does that do? I mean if you’re anything like me, you know that the A-list’s outfits supply the real juicy tidbits: Endless free style tips! All it takes is a savvy eye to suss them out, so in the hopes of eliminating those future wardrobe quandaries, here’s a glance at the latest celebrity success stories. Enjoy! x S.C.

Why It Works: By opting for nude-colored heels and upswept hair, Swank elongates her already lean frame.

Mischa Barton

Why It Works: She makes a simple shift look elegant by pairing it with high-shine evening accessories. Try the tunic dress for yourself.

Julianne Moore

Naomi Campbell

Who: Naomi Campbell
Where: Leaving her community service
, New York
Why It Works: She’s defying dress codes (normally the sanitation department workers carry on in less ostentatious gear). Plus, Campbell’s working the double shift: Rumor has it that her comings and goings from community service will soon be turned into a W Magazine fashion spread! Test drive her fedora hat look before it hits newsstands.

Party Scene: Samsonite’s Soiree

Who knew Samsonite had such a fashionable side? First, the suitcase house collaborated with Alexander McQueen on a spring line of leather, skeletal-looking trolley-style cases, and now it taps Christina Ricci to be the face of their new Fashionaire line.

To honor their new poster-girl, the luggage label packed them in (pun very much intended) last night at the Rose Bar at Ian Schrager’s Gramercy Park Hotel. Marisa Tomei mingled with event co-host Cameron Silver of L.A. emporium Decades, while Ricci held court at the tables displaying the latest Fashionaire wares (which are very retro-chic sans the unfortunate musty smell found in actual vintage trunks).

When asked her travel essentials, Ricci professed to be quite the minimalist. “Just the basics: I’m a firm believer in that there’s very few things that you can’t do without for a day or two,” she said. “I just bring comfy clothes and two pairs of heels.” As for her favorite get-away destinations, St. Tropez and Ibiza can’t compare the 90210 area. “I travel so much for work,” she says, “ That for me, staying at home is like a vacation.” Spoken like a true globetrotter.

Style Snapshot: Rosario Dawson

Who: Rosario Dawson

Where: Grindhouse premiere, Los Angeles  When: March 26, 2007 What: Donna Karan satin dress, Cartier Jewels

Why It Works: She kept it simple. A strapless satin dress runs the risk of looking prom night ’91, but Dawson skipped any bedazzled necklace or dangling earrings in lieu of a classic Cartier cuff. The side-swept pony tail normally veers in retro territory, but somehow she pulls it off. x S.C.

Market Appointments: Calvin Klein

At this morning’s Calvin Klein open house male and female models lounged on a pyramid of stairs clad in the fall CK line of velvet dresses, charcoal grey jackets, and the like.

The live model presentation always poses an interesting quandary to editors, buyers, and one would assume models alike: How does one take in the new designs without staring down the lithe young things that wear them? Engage or not engage with the models? How must it feel to have the well-shod sussing you out without the relief of the friendly runway barrier? And what about those sporting the latest under garments: Does one eye the goods (I’m talking about clothes here, so get your mind out of the gutter) or politely look away?

I opted for the latter, and trotted off to the wardrobe racks where there were more than a few white knit dresses (sure to be featured in magazines’ December/January “Winter White” trend stories) and luxe accessories positioned in picture-perfect displays.

L.A. VIPs

Before I officially log off from L.A. re-caps (until next season that is), I have to share a particularly fond fashion memory. Before heading back to the east coast I joined a few of my favorite L.A. insiders for a celebratory bite. (As for what we were celebrating, it was ½ for hellos, ¼ goodbyes, and ¼ part happy fashion week wishes, sprinkled in with liberal doses of good cheer.) The group included style gurus and girls-about-town Katherine Powers and Hillary Kerr of WhoWhatWearDaily, and Hillary Rush (owner, ie head honcho, of Hillary Rush boutique).

Kerr Powers Rush

At the other end of the table sat stylist and Milk boutique’s buyer Ilaria Urbinati, Carey Parsons of Belles Showroom (see my previous post about her showrooms latest wares), and the ingenius photographer Melanie Pullen. Dinner was held at Dominick’s and we feasted on the restaurants renowned dishes including the truffle pasta, which drew more than a few appreciative moans‑‑one guest even compared the dish to pleasures of the more carnal kind. (Beat that review Zagat.)

Conversation was equally as titillating, and of course, revolved around savory style tidbits. Hastens mattresses and their big ticket price tag (a mattress and box spring will set you back $12-50,000) made eyes roll. Rush mentioned there was a Hastens outpost in SoHo’s ABC Carpet and Home, which lead the conversation into furniture and fashion, specifically to Jessica Kagan Cushman’s distinctive ivory bangles and the news that she may be launching a secondary line soon.

The table complimented Power’s Prada headband—we all agreed look better on her than on some Hollywood starlets who shall remain nameless—which segued into a impromptu review of the fall collections. I won’t get into who said what, but the net-net is that had we been able to add a few dream guests to our fashiony dinner party, they would have included Azzedine Alaia, Nicholas Ghesquire, and Marc Jacobs. (R.S.V.Ps required of course.) x S.C.

Fashion Questions

After a quick review of what the style savvy are talking about these days, it seems the fashionably inclined should pose these questions to themselves:

Are skinny jeans officially over? Read BGlam’s quandry.

Is the new Helmut Lang line as good as the original article? See what California Style has to say.

Out with the Hollywood starlets and in with the runway stars? Get the scoop on Fashionologie.

Is there such a thing as too much patent? Read up on Refinery29’s report.

Can candy-colored clothes make one salivate? Find out for yourself by perusing Nylon’s pages.

(Hint: I’d say Yes to just about all of the above.)

Blog Tour: Eco Fashion Finds and More

For those of you who haven’t checked out my colleague’s blogs here at Glam.com, it would behoove you to do so if you want to stay up-to-date. Among the noteworthy gems I just found is the blurb on Earnest Sewn’s new uniforms for California gas station Helios House as spotted by our Merchandising Editor, Nicole Sargent.

And on GlamScene, Glam’s Entertainment Editor, Lauren Barth hones in on one of the city’s up-and-coming hotspots. (Hint: It’s where Zac Posen held his after-party during New York’s recent Fashion Week.) I could point out a few more must-read postings, but I’ll let you find a few more on your own. x S.C.

Fashion Phrases

Good clothes open all doors.–Thomas Fuller

Since college I’ve had a card with this quote of Fuller’s tacked next to my computer. It’s short, straight to the point, and it rings true more often than not. When I looked at it again today (and recalled my doorman opening the door today with what I took to be an appreciative glance at my orange suede platforms) I was thinking about how many other fashion witticisms are floating around out there. So, in the hopes of compiling a master list of amusing and inspiring style-related sentiments, I’ve started researching a few key quotes. Here’s my start. Let me know if you come across any others. x S.C.

“Personality begins where comparison ends.” –Karl Lagerfeld

“Fashion fades, style is eternal.” – Yves Saint Laurent

“Women dress alike all over the world: They dress to be annoying to other women.” –Elsa Schiaparelli

“A woman’s perfume will tell you more about her than her handwriting” –Christian Dior

“You can never be too rich or too thin.” –Babe Paley

“Looking good and dressing well is a necessity. Having a purpose in life is not.” –Oscar Wilde

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” –Gore Vidal
