Emerging Artist Alert: Shanna Fisher

Shanna Fisher Portrait

Attention all you art directors on the hunt for the next-up-and-coming photographer: Shanna Fisher has arrived. The girl’s the real deal: An LA-native turned East Village resident, Fisher will graduate from SVA next month. For now, you can find her moody, ethereal portraits online, while the artist herself in moonlights a few days a week in Steven Alan’s shop. (Just when you thought Steven Alan couldn’t get any cooler…). x S.C.

Trend Spotting: White Noise

As any avid reader of the New York Times or Town & Country can tell you, the wedding season is now in full swing. And while bells ring and wedding announcements multiply in the Sunday Times’ Style section, a profusion of L.W.D.’s are hitting stores for us non-brides. (To score one for yourself, try this shopping shortcut.) The white noise reached a fever pitch for me this week, as nearly every event I attended focused on wedding gowns or something in their signature non-color. See below for few highlights. X S.C.

Store Scout: Priscilla of Boston

Priscilla of Boston Wedding Dress
Inside Priscilla of Boston’s new Manhattan atelier

Few historians would discuss the Nixon family and wedding gowns in the same breath, but that’s why there’s scholarly fashion scribes who can connect the dots. After reading Eric Wilson’s story about the White House’s favorite bridal house Priscilla of Boston, opening a New York emporium, I hit the boutique’s opening fete to see what all the fuss was about.

Not being in the market for bridal gowns myself, I wasn’t expected to be wooed, but I quickly fell for the space: Spacious and cushy, the vast room boasted well-appointed interiors as detailed as the dresses themselves. (I especially liked the sea-urchin shaped table lamp. PofB’s interior designer wins points for putting together a fresh mix fixtures and furniture.)

The dressing rooms—roughly the size of an East Village studio apartment—were both dramatic and intimate, adjectives that no doubt many women use to describe their dream I-Do day. Each dress was confectionary masterpiece, and all were in the same refined, romantic style as the bridal label’s best known creation, Grace Kelly’s wedding dress.

Something To Think About: Wedding Mini-Gowns

Priscilla of Boston Mini Bridal Gown

For the bride who elopes in Vegas: With an empire waist, baby-pink sash, and layers of dainty lace, it should be considered a condensed version of the classic fairytale gown. Plus, there’s no train to drag you down on the dance-floor. What’s not to love? X S.C.

Store Scout: Henri Bendel

Henri Bendel Interior

Inside Henri Bendel

Fresh off his Milan Furniture Fair tour, new Lladro creative director Jaime Hayon recently joined his Lladro team in redecorating Henri Bendel’s Fifth Avenue flagship. With Lladro’s butterfly chandelier suspended from the store’s cavernous atrium, and the new Re-Cyclos Magical (made entirely from recycled porcelain) collection displayed next to a well-edited collection of all-white accessories, the shop resembled a futuristic wonderland. (How fitting for spring’s space-age trend!)

May I suggest Lladro’s horse-leg cups and decanters for those hard-to-find tongue-in-chic gifts. The all-white installation has since been dismantled, but never fear: Designer must-haves are of course, always in store at Bendels and the Lladro shop around the corner.x S.C.

Style Survey

Congratulations. You’ve made it to Friday—a common goal shared by nearly one and all. Yet some outside the fashion industry might be puzzled to think that the style set is just as eager as say, insurance claim specialists, to end their work-week. What about all those free clothes? What about all those parties? How can you ever get sick of all that? From my experience, response for many includes late nights, intense deadlines, and fanatical superiors. I’d even venture to guess that if asked to give an assessment of their day-to-day, most industry insiders would say it’s 5% glitz, 95% grunt-work.

Wanting to take a more thorough evaluation, I took an informal poll of a few industry insiders and asked each to describe their job and workplace in 5 words or less. Most avoided specifics—and expletives—but even so, their responses might surprise you. Here’s what they had to say, listed from glowing niceties to tormented prose. (When reading, cut the particularly aggravated editors some slack: It’s finally Friday after a long week of preparing for the big September issues, and since cocktails aren’t allowed in the office, quip-y comments have to suffice. Feel free to add yours.) x S.C.

Style Spotlight: Nanette Lepore

Nanette Lepore London Shop
With an aesthetic best described as flirty English Rose and sweetly Victorian name like Nanette, it would be easy to make the same daft mistake that I did, and wrongly assume that  Nanette Lepore is British. Not the case, as I recently found out during a Q&A session I had with the designer. Among the other fun tidbits, I learned that Lepore actually hails from Ohio, taught Thakoon a few tricks, shops at American Apparel, and recently opened a boutique in London. (Here, one would be correct in assuming that hershop fits in well with the city’s fashionable Knotting Hill neighborhood.) For more on Miss Lepore, click here, and for a shopping shortcut, check this out. X S.C.

Style Spotlight: Claire Danes

Claire Danes Green Dress
Who: Claire Danes
When: April 22, 2007
Where: En route to a preview of the new Frost/Nixon play in New York City
Why It Works: Danes proves that opposites attract. Few would think of pairing Prada’s suede fringe bag (on of the season’s must-have satchels) with a sleek satin sheath dress, but it’s the unexpected combination of textures that ultimately makes this outfit seem fresh. Simple sandals with a hint of shine elongate her lithe, ballerina legs. And yes, that’s Hugh Dancy next to her.

Something To Think About: Hedi Slimane’s Website

hedi.jpg

Hedi Slimane is popular. The former Dior Homme designer has 249 friends, including The Strokes, Babyshambles, and Phoenix—at least according to his MySpace page. The fact that the edgy designer launched an online site might not be news to some of you well-rounded readers (The L.A. Times mentioned it earlier this month. ) but I thought I’d point it out anyway. Mainly because I think it’s worth nothing that there’s a major shift going on in the fashion world: Instead of remaining inaccessible and aloof like their stodgy predecessors, young industry darlings like Mr. Slimane are waking up to the fact that today’s fashion followers are chic and tech savvy—and that to stay in the game, designers need an online presence too, be it with a diary-like blog or e-commerce shop. (Now if only Slimane’s mentor Karl Lagerfeld would do some personal podcasts. ) Until then, you can sign up on MySpace Slimane’s BFF. x S.C.

Style Spotlight: Fashionable Florists

Flower Truck

At long last, spring is in full bloom here in New York. The trees are budding, the daffodils are popping up in the park, and the city’s flower district—which just happens to be near the Glam offices—has never looked so lush. Seeing the streets paved with petals, so to speak, it made me wonder: Out of all the cherry-blossom branches, potted tulips, and rose buds available, which is considered the most fashionable flower?

To find out, I called around to the florists favored by the city’s style set. “Editors seem to like peonies,” said the folks at Miho Flowers, the fleuriste of choice for many at Conde Nast. A downtown floral designer was more specific: “The girls at Vogue are into the very English, very flowery bouquets, while Marilyn modeling agency is more understated: They like their arrangements cold and streamlined.” Agency requests aside, vibrantly-hued sprays still rank high on the list of oft-requested orders according to Lewis Miller of LMD, “As glamorous as the industry may be, many fashion insiders still work in boring little cubicles; Having a bouquet with a shot color can really make a difference.” An editor based out of the 4 Times square building agrees: “I love it when people send me colorful flowers. Pinks, oranges, reds, whatever—just the kind of bouquet that I can put in the middle of my desk to brighten up the room—and hopefully, my day.”

orchids.jpg

Unsurprisingly, carnations and chrysanthemums are still considered a gauche gift, while orchids—thought by many to be a chic, classic choice—proved to be a hot topic for haute horticulturalists. “Orchids have become a very predictable and tired choice,” says Miller “They’re always around, and always beautiful, but they don’t convey luxury and chicness like they did ten years ago.” So what’s the most fashionable these days? “Cabbage roses and peonies are heavy hitters of course, but something I’m into that my clients are really on board with is using more local flowers. Instead of importing so many flowers from abroad—and using all that jet fuel—I’m buying beautiful tulips from New Jersey growers, dahlias and anemones from upstate New York, etc.”

And so while some are starting to take an eco-chic approach to office greening, others in the industry are coming up with other creative ways to express their aesthetic. “We had a strange request not too long ago to make a “sexy bouquet,” revealed one mid-town florist. “In the end we went with tightly-packed black calla lilies. Later we found out it was for Tom Ford.” x S.C.

Need to say Thank you for that amazing story about our client or I’m sorry we mis-credited your $4,000 croc bag as costing $400? Here, a short and chic list of the city’s most fashionable florists:

VSF (Very Special Flowers)
204 W. 10th St., near Bleecker St.; 212-206-7236
The West Village firm has decorated Ralph Lauren’s many offices, boutiques, and homes for years. “Mr. Lauren is one of our biggest customers,” a representative said recently, “Wherever he goes, we go.”

Miho Flowers

310 East 44th Street, ; 212-922-9122
In addition to building an impressive client roster (that includes Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs, and Isaac Mizrahi) owner Miho Kosuda has perfected the art of arranging roses in sophisticated, spectrum-crossing bouquets.

LMD

437 East 12th Street; 212-614-2734
No-nonsense owner Lewis Miller is thoughtful about where he sources his flowers and how he arranges them. If his down-to-earth demeanor doesn’t win you over, his artful arrangements certainly will.

Simpson & Co.
852 Tenth Avenue; 212-765-6929
The Bergdorf Goodman of florists. The storied firm (which boasts an on-site horticulturalist) caters to those with discriminating taste, including Calvin Klein, Saks, Tiffany, Cartier, Max Mara—and Bergdorf Goodman. If you’re nervous about booking with the big-wigs, just remember to mind your Ps & Qs: When I called and asked how they can identify a chic shopper the gentleman on the line said, “It’s not the flower you request, but the way in which you ask for it.”

Michael George
5 Tudor City Place; 212.883.0304

A favorite of the Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, and Gucci teams, Michael George specializes in sleek, monochromatic arrangements. To pick up some bouquet-making pointers for yourself, catch one of his lectures.
