Kate Bosworth at the Whitney Party (more pictures to come, I swear!)
Last night, after a long day of rushing around to various resort collection appointments, (all of which were beautiful, but more on that later) I swung by the Whitney Contemporaries Art Party. For those interested in knowing the official details, I’m happy to inform you that the annual fete features a VIP guest list of art, fashion, & celebrity circles as well as an silent art auction. Both the proceeds from the auction and the tickets (priced $250 a pop with a long waiting list) go to benefit the Whitney’s prestigious Independent Study Program. (Which I like to think of as day camp for really talented artists, but I know it’s much more intense than that.)
Now for those who just want the dirt, I’ll see what I can do for you. First off, the dress code: While the invitation called for Hippy Chic, (why, I’m not sure as hippy chic isn’t exactly de rigueur this season, but no matter) but many of the well-heeled guests—including the lithe Kate Bosworth—opted for the body hugging 80s-style dresses by Herve Leger. (The label, as you fashion insiders know, is owned by BCBG, the event’s co-host. See the connection now?)
Inside Skylight Studio’s vast space, guests mingled around the 6 well-stocked bars, carefully avoiding the well-lit dance floor (FYI, the fashion pack doesn’t dance, unless it’s dark and well after 2 a.m.). In one cozy section (ie, 4 white couches sectioned off in a corner by a red velvet rope and beefy bodyguards) sat Emmy Rossum, Rosario Dawson, Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ivanka Trump, and Anna Wintour’s darling daughter, Bee Shaffer. Although I’m sure they were comfy and cozy, they missed out on seeing the many fun fashion faces in attendance.
I said hello to the cheery and charming Sue Stemp who was their with beau in tow (be sure to visit her blog in a bit, for her own re-cap of the festivities). No doubt Hollywould designer Holly Dunlap will post about the night in her blog too, as she was there, looking stunningly statuesque, as per usual.
Among all the boho-styled designer beauties (including Abaete’s Laura Poretzky, Milly’s Michelle Smith, and Imitation of Christ’s Tara Subkoff) I was feeling a bit doubtful of my own wardrobe choice—a black Viktor & Rolf tux jacket, black high-waist satin shorts, white Clu tee, and ’40s-style Moschino heels—until I saw Phillip Lim, who complimented me on my ensemble. (I in turn, congratulated him on his recent CFDA win.) Lisa Salzer was looking especially fetching by layering her own Lulu Frost jewelry over her Magda Berliner dress and my other favorite jeweler, Waris, was there with the charming Chiara Clemente. We started to catch up, but I got distracted by artists Bec Stupak and Viva Ruiz who were waltzing around with floral crowns on—and not much else. There was lots of “where are you summering?” chit-chat going on in all corners, but as I was leaving all I could hear was the delightful crash of a champagne glasses tumbling out of guest’s hands and onto the floor—the sign of a successful style soiree, to be sure. x S.C.
