Resort Re-Cap: Alexander Wang

Not too long ago I took a sneak peek of Alexander Wang’s sporty resort collection. The young designer’s cruise separate were very much in the athletic vein, so the crafty Wang decided to showcase his latest designs in an exclusive Soho gym.

While I admired his sequined racer-back dresses, tailored shorts, and body-conscious dresses, his use of acid orange and yellow is what captured my attention. (So much so that I had to sneak back into his showroom, The News, to get a closer look.)

Neon as you know, made a comeback on the runway recently, as designers mined all those festive ’80s and ’90s looks. However, I have on good authority from a friend in Paris, that neon hues are slated to be even bigger next season, so ready your shades now. (Said friend has the enviable job of being an international trend-spotter: Her 9-5 consists of traveling around Europe to photograph stylish men, women, and children on the street. ) Taking her research into consideration as well as the latest creations from the incredibly spot-on Mr. Wang, I’d bet all of my spending money that come February, the runways will heat up again with fluorescent-colored garments.

How to prepare for such a movement? Since it’s tough to find items to buy right now, I’d suggest doing your homework before fashion week, just so you have a few fascinating cocktail conversation items on hand. For instance, do you know what pop star first made neon popular? (I’d be tempted to say Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust Glam Rock days, but I could be wrong.) Or what it is that makes neon colors, well, neon?

Neon Chart
Thanks for the chart Wikipedia

(A cursory glance at Google yielded this handy chart relating to the Neon element, while a few clicks later, I read that the phosphorescent and fluorescent pigments found in neon inks and dyes emit their own light where as normal colors tend to absorb light.) Or what about artists that use fluorescent lights in their work? (To pick up some appropriate, arty references remind yourself to brush up on the bios of Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman, Spencer Finch, Olafur Eliasson.) Make of this scant info what you will, but keep in mind that the most inspiring trendsetters out there are often those that are well-informed about the who, what, and why of their wardrobes. X S.C.
