Style Snapshot: Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow

This is an admittedly gratuitous post of Miss. Paltrow. The black & white strapless dress is stylish, but not jaw-droppingly so. She’s got August tan-lines like any other girl. A black cardi is her cover-up of choice–not exactly a novel look, all in all. But hopefully I’m not the only one that breathed a sigh of relief to see Mrs.Martin back in the red carpet scene; the poptarts and prom queens have stolen the limelight for far too long. Three cheers for true talent, like Miss Paltrow, to take the stage again.

Fashion Face-Off, Pt I

fashion text

Fashion, for some, runs in the family. Some of the most well-known and enviable legacies are perhaps best displayed during fashion week, as editors bring their equally well-shod offspring to sit alongside them at the runway shows and designers thank their sons and daughters for support and inspiration in the after-show swirl. When reviewing some of fashion industry’s fashionable families, there’s few rebellious moves to be seen. Instead, most mothers and daughters share a similar aesthetic. But then again, if I had access to Carine Roitfeld’s closet, I’d be borrowing from it everyday too. Skip on over to our site to VOTE on your favorite duo or trio. Last time I checked it out, the Roitfelds and the Trumps were battling it out for the Chicest of All title. Perhaps their appearances at fashion week’s shows and evens will sway the results. xS.C.

Clueless Quote

When picking up today’s New York Times, prudish grandmother-types and sartorial snobs alike will be pleased to see a Style section piece on the fashion blasphemy that is the baggy pant phenomenon. The style is now under scrutiny—even being newly outlawed in some states—hence the reason for its prime, pre-fashion week placement. I’m a firm believer the side that much like other sacred bonds, one’s relationship with fashion shouldn’t be legislative concern, but even so the article left me a feeling a little disconcerted: I mean how could anyone write about saggy trousers and not quote Clueless? (see above) Alicia Silverstone’s vintage quote—pulled from the 1995 classic—suggests that the 10 year+ long trend isn’t going to anywhere soon, laws or no laws. xS.C.

Trendspotting: Young Hollywood Tones it Down

While reading up on Glamscene’s Teen Choice coverage I couldn’t help but notice that many of the young hopefuls hitting the carpet were already working fall trends—albeit more subdued, youthful versions of those styles seen on the runway. Happily, the majority of bold-faced names at the event went for age-appropriate attire. Here’s a sampling of some of the more successful looks:

Donna Karan and Lauren Conrad
Copping a teal…Donna Karan Fall 2008, and the Hills’ Lauren Conrad in her own design

Oscar de la Renta and Hillary Duff
Golden girls… Oscar de La Renta Fall 2008, Hillary Duff in Corey Lynn Calter

Expert Advice: Fall Shopping

Glam Editors Picks Story
Editor’s Picks Stories: Nylon, Marie Claire, Refinery29

And speaking of pulling back the curtain…don’t miss our new Editor’s Picks stories on Glam. I asked a few fashion editors (full disclosure: I know and adore all of them) what was on their fall wish-lists. Since they are exceptionally well-versed in fashion and style, they sent back page-long, intricate, itemized lists which sadly, I had to whittle down to a few must-haves. Not surprisingly, the editors’ personal style bears resemblance to their publication’s aesthetic, which means there’s something in these shopping stories to suit every taste–including yours. xS.C.

Something to Think About: Pulling Back the Curtain

I recently spotted the video of Ford model Elyse practicing her runway strut on COACD, a guilty pleasure/awe-inspiring industry must-read of mine. Ford Models, in case you’ve had your head buried in big September issues instead of gazing online, is beefing up their web presence with Ford Models.TV. The new site features trend reports, interviews, style and fitness tips all of which showcase the agency’s impressive roster of talent. While the clips are short, sweet, and entertaining for all, the Elyse clip is geared toward industry types looking to cast models in their runway shows—which is why I found it so fascinating.

Many in the style sphere are skittish—or more likely, too stressed out—to reveal the nuances of their day-to-day to inquiring minds—a.k.a. outsiders. Instead, some prefer to take a cloak-and-dagger approach (considering fall’s trends, perhaps cape-and-dagger is a better fit?), avoiding interviews and any interaction that may reveal their. However, as the Ford clip demonstrates, even revealing the most mundane aspect (in this case, a make-up free model prancing up and down a carpeted hallway) help illuminate, not detract from, the intriguing, inner workings of the industry. The process! The people! The products! It all forms a glittering web, one that entrances many. And afterall, it’s worth remembering that even when the curtain was pulled back on the Wizard of OZ, the gleaming Emerald City never lost its luster. xS.C.

Fashion Week Prediction: Part I

Bat for Lashes Nathasha Khan
On the rise: Natasha Khan (left) of Bat for Lashes

Previewing clips of up-and-coming musicians before they hit their peak is the second most enjoyable aspect of sitting in on fashion shows. To accompany the debut of their latest sartorial feats—the real allure of watching the runway spectacles—designers and their production teams craft up stylish soundtracks, many of which become favorites of industry insiders and their i-pods. And, as we all know, the more photogenic musicians have been known to make the most of these chic circumstances, graduating from must-play status to most-photographed in the fashion scene. (Case in point? Cat Power’s rise from indie-songstress to Chanel poster girl.)

Bat for Lashes, the band helmed by British singer/performer Natasha Khan, seems to be a prime candidate for a featured spot during fall fashion week. Now embarking on her second tour, Khan is quickly gaining fans: Shout-outs in Vogue, Nylon, and Dazed & Confused have already come her way, and her “What’s A Girl To Do” video has garnered plenty of attention on YouTube since its June debut. (Attention DJs: The song’s steady back-beat makes it ideal choice for models strutting down the runway, while Khan’s ethereal voice sets a sensual mood that any designer show could benefit from.)

Add to this her status as a Thom Yorke favorite and the fact that her own inimitable style seems straight from a photo-shoot: With a face framed by femme fatale bangs and ribbon-accented locks, Khan transforms blouses in My Little Pony pastels into precocious sex kitten attire. And heck, her debut album was titled Fur and Gold—two trends which appear in every major fashion magazine’s September issue. How’s that for being ahead of the curve? x.S.C.

Tennis Gear, Sharapova Style

Sharapova Nike
Sharapova in her new Nike US Open dress

In the midst of the aforementioned fashion week planning, comes many a US Open event. Fortunately for me, nearly all those that I attend are style-related. Last night I made the trek to Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center’s alarmingly high/awe-inducing observation deck) for the unveiling of Maria Sharapova’s new Nike dress.

The defending US Open champion, fashion plate, and official tennis it-girl showed off her new sport frock (sprock?) to a roomful of curious photographers and editors, noting that the dress’s explosion of Swarovski crystals at the neckline echoes the shape of the New York City skyline. The scarlet version of the dress—in a bright red hue to further accentuate a Big Apple inspiration—was made for the night games, while a tamer black and white version is intended for Sharapova’s day matches. “I like simple things with special details,” she said of the dress’s design, “and I love that I can incorporate my ideas into these designs.” Considering this year’s style and the fact that last year’s version was modeled after the iconic little black dress Audrey Heburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Miss Sharapova would appear to be one cosmopolitan all-star. x S.C.
