Fashion magazines are notoriously competitive with one another in regards to just about everything, from staff and feature stories to covergirls and more. And come fall, it appears the industry’s publishing heavy-weights are taking their battle into the bookstore.
Just after New York fashion week, Elle’s Nina Garcia—she of the Project Runway fame—Little Black Book of Style is slated to hit the Barnes & Noble scene. The petite book—only 8 x 6 inches, roughly the size of a Jimmy Choo clutch —which is published by HarperCollins , rolls all of her fashion insight into a tidy 160 pages. Sketches from Ruben Toledo—illustrator extraordinaire and husband of the equally talented Isabel Toledo—accompany Garcia’s anecdotes.
But in November, a bigger, 240-page tome from the folks at Bazaar will be edging in on the LBBS’s shelf space. The book, Great Style: THe Best Ways to Update Your Look, helmed by the magazine’s Senior Fashion News Editor, Jenny Levin, promises to be filled full of “practical know-how about timeless style.” In otherwords, the HB hardback number will contain all the same sort of insider tips, quips, and shortcuts as the magazine, but thankfully for us pack-rats, it will be much easier to store than piles of back-issues.
So what’s the price-tag on these precious style secrets? Well, as per Amazon—where, by the way, you can pre-order both right now—Bazaar’s book has the friendly sticker of $24.95 while Garcia’s will only set you back $12.21. The lesson learned? Even fashion foes can agree that much like black stilettos, white button-downs, and little black dresses, a cost-conscious attitude will be forever in style. xS.C.
P.S. HB & Elle may be entering the reading rainbow this season, but it’s worth remembering that they’re not the only glossy name to have done so. Here, a survey of some titles with editorial roots:

InStyle’s Secrets of Style (hmm; it appears everyone has secrets)

Catwalk Cat’s by Vogue’s Grace Coddington

Grace Coddington’s 30 Years of Fashion at Vogue

And the best of all, a re-cap of the short-lived yet still-unrivaled Flair

Susan,
Thanks for mentioning Nina’s book. A small edit: HarperCollins is actually publishing it, and I’d be delighted to send over a copy if you’d like.
Cheers, Felicia

There is another big book this season.Martin Dawbers “Big Book Of Fashion Illustration” 384 pages of contemporary fashion illustrations from all over the world.
A homage to an art that still flourishes despite or because of the influx of photography.
