I recently spotted the video of Ford model Elyse practicing her runway strut on COACD, a guilty pleasure/awe-inspiring industry must-read of mine. Ford Models, in case you’ve had your head buried in big September issues instead of gazing online, is beefing up their web presence with Ford Models.TV. The new site features trend reports, interviews, style and fitness tips all of which showcase the agency’s impressive roster of talent. While the clips are short, sweet, and entertaining for all, the Elyse clip is geared toward industry types looking to cast models in their runway shows—which is why I found it so fascinating.
Many in the style sphere are skittish—or more likely, too stressed out—to reveal the nuances of their day-to-day to inquiring minds—a.k.a. outsiders. Instead, some prefer to take a cloak-and-dagger approach (considering fall’s trends, perhaps cape-and-dagger is a better fit?), avoiding interviews and any interaction that may reveal their. However, as the Ford clip demonstrates, even revealing the most mundane aspect (in this case, a make-up free model prancing up and down a carpeted hallway) help illuminate, not detract from, the intriguing, inner workings of the industry. The process! The people! The products! It all forms a glittering web, one that entrances many. And afterall, it’s worth remembering that even when the curtain was pulled back on the Wizard of OZ, the gleaming Emerald City never lost its luster. xS.C.
