When picking up today’s New York Times, prudish grandmother-types and sartorial snobs alike will be pleased to see a Style section piece on the fashion blasphemy that is the baggy pant phenomenon. The style is now under scrutiny—even being newly outlawed in some states—hence the reason for its prime, pre-fashion week placement. I’m a firm believer the side that much like other sacred bonds, one’s relationship with fashion shouldn’t be legislative concern, but even so the article left me a feeling a little disconcerted: I mean how could anyone write about saggy trousers and not quote Clueless? (see above) Alicia Silverstone’s vintage quote—pulled from the 1995 classic—suggests that the 10 year+ long trend isn’t going to anywhere soon, laws or no laws. xS.C.
