Hefty Heels Rule in Milan

It may be tough to see in all these runway photos, but clunky colorful heels were, as they say, all the rage in Milan. Some of the most stunning scarpe could be found on Belstaff and Derercuny runways.

Belstaff Orange

Belstaff

Belstaff, the storied Italian house best known for their motocross jackets, unveiled a sleek ‘n’ sporty collection of leather minis, anorak-style silk dresses, and cropped jackets, all of which were made more futuristic (and appealing) by chunky cubist platforms.

Belstaff Black

Belstaff

On the Derecuny runway, artful, girlish dresses were de rigeur, but when worn with tri-color strappy platforms or studded sandals, the sweet dresses looked hip not saccharine. Many a fashion week attendee pulled of this of-the-moment look, by pairing opaque tights and hefty-looking heels with dainty dresses.

Milan Fashion Week Highlights

best of milan

Paris fashion week kicks off tomorrow, but before we zoom in on the City of Light’s shining stars, let’s review the high notes of Milan fashion week:

Ferretti Spring 2008 dressAlberta Ferretti Black Dress
Alberta Ferretti

Mighty Aphrodite indeed! Putting a sporty twist on her signature Grecian style, Alberta Ferretti turned out short dresses in draped silk jersey, two-color togas, and watery prints that resembled Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. The collection’s few refined flourishes—like the clusters of dark crystals which looked a bit like Julius Caesar’s crown—gave good reason to go Greek for spring.

Burberry Spring 2008Burberry Spring 2008 Agyness Deyn
Burberry

The Burberry show opened with hair color chameleon Agyness Deyn (our It-Girl) waltzing out with jet-black hair—the first surprise of many to be sent down the runway. The edgy English Rose who had romanced Christopher Bailey for so many seasons seemed to have been banished, and in her place came a feistier ‘80s heroine. Spring’s sexy Burberry girl prefers clingy ruched dresses, bold lace-up coats, and the kind of studded belts and bags which epitomize tough luxe.

dSQUARED Y DRESSdsQUARED SPRING DRESS
D Squared

Sure, some designers many have a few A-list pals sit in their front row but Dan and Dean Caten had Rihanna walk in their spring runway show. While the siren proved to be the inspiration for the show—which like her new Shut Up and Drive video featured a body shop full of flashy cars and oiled-up boys—the flashy ‘60s-feeling collection was geared toward the party-hopping set. (Editor’s Note: No mainstream fashion press picked up on the fact that the Canadian designers co-opted her video. What, are they not watching the same Euro MTV I am? If not, they’re clearly missing out. ) The designers’ barely-there dresses, perky shifts and Elizabeth Taylor-worthy caftans recalled Hollywood’s big-haired heyday when hostesses served wine spritzers, Valium, and pâté at their VIP pool parties.

Dolce DayDolce Gown
Dolce & Gabbana

The Sicilian designers aren’t exactly known for being conservative, but for spring, the duo tempered their seductress styles with thoughtful arty accents. For day, the designers showed sculptural brocade minis and minimalist dresses in nearly transparent silk— just the thing to spice up the workplace instantly. The showstopper gowns—voluminous tulle constructions doused with colorful paint washes—made the biggest splash on the runway, and would have the same effect on the red carpet.

Pucci Best of
Emilio Pucci

For spring, Matthew Williamson tinkered with Emilio Pucci’s iconic pastels, amping up the hues by applying them in bolder, wider swaths than usual. His exploratory mood brought him to the American West for inspiration, which helps explain his tinkering with tribal motifs, feathers, and fringe. The most dramatic results are suited to adventurous types who aren’t afraid to take a fashion risk.

Emporio Armani Best of
Emporio Armani

While technically the little sister line to Armani’s blockbuster Giorgio line, the Emporio collection is more appealing to those who don’t have loads of red-carpet events in their date book. The collection featured many of the designer’s flourishes tempered for the 9-to-5 world—including jaunty black-and-white checks dresses, draped skirts, and long lady-like blazers—a series of sexy black sequined numbers seemed to suggest that working girls should have a wild night out on the town from time to time.

Fendi BOM
Fendi

It’s hard to say which piece of news from the house of Fendi generated more buzz: The fact that the house will present a runway show on the Great Wall of China next fall, that the Baguette bag just turned ten, or that Karl Lagerfeld introduced an unexpected ¾ silhouette for spring. The latter preoccupied the fashion set as the modest mid-calf length—which was also big in New York—became quite complex, complete with fly-away skirts, wide-belts, graphic prints and tiers of ruffles.

Gucci Spring 2008
Gucci

The show was kicked off with a screening of David Lynch’s new Gucci perfume commercial, which reminded viewers that the house’s consists of so much more than just what’s shown on the runway. Spring added a new chapter to Gucci’s history of catwalk chic one that focused on Barbie-style dresses and skirts—i.e. cinched waist numbers with plenty of pouf—biker jackets, and streamlined plaid separates, all of which came with a layer of rockabilly gloss.

Cavalli GirlsRoberto Cavalli
Roberto Cavalli

While his show featured an illuminated backdrop of Versailles, Cavalli skipped over the grandiose scenes in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette film, and instead focused on the carefree moments the queen spent indulging in pastoral romps. (Editor’s Note: The runway show opened with Air’s Playground Lover track, which was featured in Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides; I wouldn’t have pegged the designer for being a Coppola fan, would you?) His long petticoat gowns, ‘70s calico silk blouses, floral stenciled trenches and fringe-accented separates made for a breezily sensual vibe.

MissoniMissoni Gown
Missoni

What’s not to love about the Missoni collection? Sexy-meets-sophisticated knits, festive looks covered in confetti-like sequins and pool party-perfect caftans appeal to a variety of tastes. And it doesn’t hurt that the soft hues and romantic cuts are flattering to nearly one and all.

Church, State, & Style

Milan Duomo

If there was any question as to the strength of the fashion industry’s presence in Milan, a quick drive by the Duomo would surely put such silly speculation to rest. Logos of Italian Elle and Marie Claire currently cover the scaffolding that surrounds the city’s most famous site.

Drama at Dolce & Gabbana

This (above) is what we’re used to Dolce & Gabbana girls looking like: Curvaceous, coquettish, and seemingly always clad in some sort of cinched or satin-y number. The best of the bunch maintain a balance between class and sass, teetering on the fine line in killer stiletto heels.

Come spring however, devotees of the Sicilian design duo (which include Rose McGowan and Naomi Campbell, who attended yesterday’s show) will trade in their traditional flirty threads in for more refined, artistic ensembles.

And of course, the showstopper dresses—voluminous tulle constructions doused with multi-color paint washes—made a big splash on the runway. The gowns would no doubt do the same for those willing to take a risk on the red carpet.

Fendi’s Fashion Bites

Fendi BAR

Fendi Food
Fendi food

There’s been a lot of buzz in the industry (as per usual) about eating disorders, what will all those intense Nolita jeans ads plastered here, there, and everywhere. But I’ll have you know, that true to stereotypical Italian form, the fashion folks here in Milan encourage eating. In addition to Armani, many houses have offered sustenance in the form of espresso and sandwiches to their runway show guests. The spread (above) was set out before the Fendi show yesterday. (Love the little tooth-pick flags, though I’m not sure if the festive markers were used as decoration or as a color-coded guide to direct Fendi’s many international patrons to a delicacy that might suit their palate.)

FENDI SPRING 2008 CIRCLES
Fendi, Spring 2008

After indulging in pre-show nibbles, the crowd had bigger things to digest such as Karl Lagerfeld’s use  (remember the multi-talented maestro designs for Fendi too) of sweeping ¾-length silhouettes, circular shapes, and snappy geo-accents. The show also marked the 10th anniversary of the house’s original It-Bag, the Baguette. It’s a pity that birthday cake wasn’t served as well, as that’s a fashion milestone well worth celebrating.

Versace Spring 2008

Versace BAR

Versace spring 2008 dress
Versace Spring 2008

Versace is the kind of show that renders dictionaries useless: There’s simply no other way to describe the spring Versace show other than sexy. In previous seasons, Donatella Versace has toned down her house’s trademark sensuality, masking seductive pieces under retro influences, artful silhouettes, or glittery embellishment. But this season she eliminated any excess frills or fashion pretense. Instead, she served up text-book sexy looks fashioned out of liquid, body-hugging materials in lush shades; i.e. the kind of pieces that make die-hard Versace fans start panting.

Colors crossed the spectrum—from slick nudes to spicy reds—while cuts ranged from the merely coquettish (supple leather trenches to fuel those flasher fantasies) to the dangerously provocative (heart-stopping silk shifts). Even floor-length evening gowns took a racy turn. The most scintillating of the bunch look somewhat conservative until the back slit—which starts at the toes and ends right below the gluteus maximus—comes into sight. Such ensembles remind even casual bystanders that the bold Versace girl has many tricks up her sleeve—and skirt.

PUCCIS
Pucci Spring/Summer 2008

Milan Update: It’s still raining here, which means planes, trains, and automobiles–specifically taxis–are moving at a very slow speed. I didn’t take their tortoise pace into consideration when I left my hotel today. As a result, I missed the Emilio Pucci show, which sucks because (as you can see above) it looks pretty fantastic and spot-on in terms of trends (Colorblocking, feathers, etc, you know the drill.) I’d put more pictures up of Matthew Williamson’ s latest concoctions, but I have to leave now to make sure I catch the Versace show. Which is in 5 hours.

Emporio Armani Spring 2008

Emporio Armani BAR

Like their New York and Paris counterparts, Milan cab drivers can be quite a cast characters. Yesterday, while en route to a show, my cabbie commented on how stylish I was. I thanked him, and told him I was a fashion editor (I said all this in Italian, thanks to those college courses) to which he replied affirmatively “Superficiale.” (Surely, with or without any Italian vocab skills, you don’t need a translation for that.)

I was aghast. Not for the jab he threw at me, but because he had also committed Italian blasphemy! In addition to pasta, vino, cappuccino and cheese, fashion is one of the country’s most storied and treasured exports. Which means—in case you’ve experienced a memory lapse like my cabbie’s—it’s a pretty big business for the ol’ boot nation. The shoes! The bags! The gloves! The furs! The bedazzled jeans and shades!: It seems foolish to dismiss these things as being unimportant when they make up a big chunk of the Italian economy. Unfortunately, my language skills weren’t quite strong enough to express all that to my driver, so I hopped out of the car in a huff, and headed into the Emporio Armani show.

Giorgio Armani’s vast empire is perhaps the best example of Italy’s impressive and expansive fashion industry. Mr. Armani has dozens lines under his jurisdiction, ranging from his elite Giorgio line to Casa Armani, his haute homegoods collection. Armani’s sartorial reach is so great that he has to present each runway show twice and send two girls out at a time. (To entertain his second show guests, who had to wait for the first show to end, Mr. Armani thoughtfully provided a snack and coffee bar.)

Emporio Armani Cafe
Snacks are served at the Emporio Armani show

As for his show, he, like the Gucci kids, kicked off the presentation with a short film. To help remind us of his multi-layered, international eminence, the designer screened his new Diamonds perfume commercial, which featured spokesgirl Beyonce crooning “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Afterwards, (much like he did in his earlier Giorgio Armani collection) Mr. Armani played up many of his greatest hits at the Emporio Armani runway show. ‘80s pastels and neutrals dominated, as did flippy skirts, drapey blazers, and seductive dresses—not to mention all those intricate shoes and bags. While Armani’s familiar styles may draw criticism from some, he knows what he’s doing. After all, these are the kind of sexy sartorial statements that the Italian fashion industry was founded on.
