

For his 40th anniversary spectacular, Mr. Lauren drew on his favorite motifs, namely that of equestrian elegance. Though a few models wearing jockey-style silk blouses in hues bordering on neon and pastel-colored jodhpurs pranced down the runway, a horse and pony show this was not. Instead, the well-shod spectators of the sport—a la Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady—were the inspiration for spring. There were nipped-waist blazers, ruffled skirts, and floral garden party dresses that suited the show’s setting at the Central Park Conservatory. The accoutrements—top hats, canes, gloves, and boutonnières—were plucked from the English dandy’s wardrobe. The only glittering gems to be found were in the crowd….
