Marc Jacobs’ Surrealist Manifesto
By G J DONNELLY 09.10.2007 imt
The Short(ish) Story: Doors to show didn’t open till one hour after the scheduled start time. Show started 2 hours late. Many camped out in the risers in the Armory for the entire time, to protect their seats. Celebrities (who must have gotten a memo informing them of the delay) who snuck in just before the show started included Victoria Beckham, Heath Leger, Carmen Electra, Mischa Barton, Sheryl Crow, Courtney Love, and Helena Christensen. Runway was staged with large white cubes and backdrop of drawing of perspective view of more boxes. Show was presented in reverse; Marc came out to take his “bow” first, then 57 models paraded by finale-style, then proceeded to walk down the runway one at a time, starting with the evening gowns first. While girls were walking, a video of the models walking in their (MJ) underwear and full hair & make-up was played on screens at the back of the runway.
Clothes—though some might not call them that—included: Satin slip dresses with swaths cut out. Chiffon track suit-inspired pants with color blocked waistband, pieced-together in a way that seemed as if revealing undergarments worn beneath. Blouses with all ruffles and no back. Gray cashmere dresses with nude tulle panels that showed a flash of midriff. Versions of floral patterned New Look-worthy ball gowns and cocktail dresses that were cut here and there to reveal black underpinning. Accessories included see-thru lady-like totes in jewel tones, shoes with 1/2 heels, baggy gloves, rumpled leather clutches. Show ended at 11:17, editors scrambled home to write, buyers puzzled over what would sell best, and club kids headed to the Gramercy Park Hotel or to Ono to kick-off their night.
