Today our office, and surely yours too, was all atwitter this morning about last night’s premiere of Gossip Girl. While y’all eagerly await next week’s episode, let’s review a few of the top fashion (TV) shows and why they’re worth watching.

Gossip Girl cast at the show premiere party
What: Gossip Girl on the CW
Why Bother: The hype about the show being the OC in NYC is all true. (Imdb.com succinctly summarizes its plot as “high school/jealousy/manhattan/new york city/private school/teen/wealthy.”) Like the fashiony Fox show, GG will surely feature designer cameos in every episode. (Did you spot the Coach bag in last night’s show?) Such logo-dropping is to be expected when the wardrobe head honcho is Eric Daman, who gleaned his skills on the Sex and the City set.
What: Mad Men, on AMC
Why Bother: It’s a smart, retro soap opera set in Manhattan’s ‘60s advertising scene. There’s lots of saucy dialogue, dynamic characters and plenty of clever innuendo. And if that wasn’t enough to pique your interest, Katherine Jane Bryant—who won an Emmy for her work on HBO’s Deadwood—outfits the characters in spot-on vintage threads. Her gray flannel suited men make all the pencil-skirted lasses (in the past and present) swoon.

What: Dancing With the Stars, ABC
Why Bother: Granted, reality TV shows aren’t usually terribly inspiring (especially those that revolve around the fashion industry) but this one is worth tuning into if only to get in the mood for spring’s Studio 54-style frocks and Travolta-worthy white suits.
What: My Super Sweet Sixteen, MTV
Why Bother: If you can get past the fact that all the subjects seem to be spoiled, harpy, and completely IQ-impaired, the show provides an enlightening snapshot of what the kids are buying/wearing/coveting these days. More importantly, it provides viewers of a certain age with a new-found appreciation for the grungy, Sidekick-free sartorial scenery of their (ahem, our) youth.
What: Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, Bravo
Why Bother: Unlike many, I’m not a die-hard fan of Bravo’s fashion shows. But there’s something about Mr. Gunn’s demeanor and perspective that is nothing short of spectacular. Few in the industry’s inner sanctums have his rare blend of humor, insight, and heart. (And Veronica Webb, his side-kick, is just as charmingly down-to-earth.) Chances are savvy shoppers such as your selves won’t pick up any new styling tips while watching this show, but the enjoyment of listening in on the most endearing character in the fashion world is surely reason enough to tune in.
