At the end of his spring show, Karl Lagerfeld led his gaggle of models down the rainbow-striped runway, stopped halfway and turned around, leaving the runway swans to form the coolest-looking gang of girls ever. The gesture made for a nice analogy for how the rest of the fashion world follows Kaiser’s unexpected moves, on and off the runway.
For spring, he leads us into a Technicolor land, where neon Lucite accessories seem to grow on trees. Crowns, cuffs, and necklaces all crafted out of chunky plastic thorns and plaques made a major statement, while the clothes turned up the season’s ‘80s vibe with sheer black layers, geo-patterns, and an electric palette. If everyone tags along on Lagerfeld’s trip, my prediction is that teeny-bopper shops will grow brighter this spring with juicy-looking Lagerfeld knock-offs, and those who can afford the real deal may be tempted to indulge their club kid fantasies.
