Chanel Spring 2008 show, where Lagerfeld unveiled Chanel Homme
It seemed the entire population of Paris—or at least every card-carrying members of the beau monde—turned out for the Chanel show today. The spectacle was held in the Grand Palais, the same venue as last night’s YSL show, but the space had been converted into a Coliseum-like structure, complete with antechambers beneath the stage, from which the models emerged. And prowling like gladiators, burly guards filled the catwalk’s edge, no doubt to protect the models, A-list guests—which included Victoria Beckham, Courtney Love, Dita Von Teese, and Rachel Bilson—and Karl himself from the adoring masses.

In truth, it doesn’t really matter what was shown on the runway, because as I’ve said before, where ever Lagerfeld leads us, we will follow. For spring he headed in a sporty direction, picking up distressed denim, ‘80s multi-color knits, and star-spangled silks along with way.

He even contributed to the shants trend again.
Unfortunately for Chanelophiles, there were few of the house’s iconic quilted totes to choose from, as the new coquette accessory is—wait for it—and ankle bags. The size and placement of these baby bags resembled the house-arrest and alcohol monitoring anklets many pop stars have been sporting lately; No doubt the culture-vulture designer intended this tongue-in-chic reference. Despite the accent’s rebellious undertone there’s the possibility it could produce a positive effect by keeping its wearer out of trouble: These precious, tiny compartments can only hold a creditcard and lipgloss—there’s no room for car keys or any other, ahem, accoutrements.
