Carine Roitfeld and Anna Wintour…Speak!
By G J DONNELLY 10.15.2007 imt
Fashion editors are a notoriously tight-lipped group–or so it seems when they’re perched ever so stoically in the front-row. This sense of removal combined with their unquestionable influence over the industry creates an enigmatic allure that few can resist. (Case in point? You’re reading this post instead of doing your work.) The unflappable Anna Wintour and cool’n'composed Carine Roitfeld have the largest circle of curious onlookers. While we don’t have a graphologist analysis to offer up, a review of these EIC’s tone of voice (rarely heard by those outside the industry) may provide a bit of insight onto what goes in minds of these head-honchos: Here you’ll find Carine walking and talking about the recent Paris shows, tossing a brand-spanking new Balenciaga scarf, posing with fans, etc. You know, the usual:
And also check out a Parisian Kelly Ripa interviewing the French Vogue EIC in her uber-modern office. (Don’t miss the gigantic, Warholian portrait of Roitfeld that’s propped up on her leather couch.) My French is rusty, but I’m pretty sure that she says she gets 3 bouquets of flowers a day:

The Vogue EIC’s office is very English rose (remember what I reported earlier about Vogue girls and their preferred blooms?), the kind of cushy interior where one might have a spot of tea if it were not for the grueling schedule of producing several influential tomes. Everyday Janes will appreciate the fact that Wintour thinks t-shirts and jeans can be fashionable and admits that her haircut might be boring, but it works for her:
If you’re in the mood for some Schadenfreude, watch the daring Julie Frederickson, cozy up to Wintour while the EIC waits for a runway show to begin:
And….while you’re getting your fashion fix via YouTube (of all places), check out the Style.com‘s Candy Pratts Price avatar interviewing the Giorgio Armani avatar, in the designer’s Second Life boutique. (Three points to you have a Second Life avatar. Ten if you don’t know what an avatar is. Twenty if you don’t care.) The best, most-meta part of the whole thing is that the Price and Armani figurines don’t speak; there are only subtitles. The highlight for me was Price’s non-sequitor, “Will Armani be competing in the
Finally, if you need help finding your way back to reality, cue up a clip of Elle EIC Roberta Myers. Her straight-forward attitude brings those lofty fashion ideas down to earth, reminding us that style and smarts can—and should—go hand in hand.
