Victoria’s Secret Surrealist Manifesto
By G J DONNELLY 11.16.2007 imt
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is nothing if not absolutely spectacular. As seen yesterday in Hollywood, the show featured a blinging Heidi and Mr.Klum bringing down the house while upping the ante on Sonny & Cher-style coupledom. Dozens of the most successful sex kittens on earth prowled the mile-long catwalk, balancing fantastical lingerie-like contraptions with awe-inspiring ease. Some might think red-blooded American males make up the prime demographic for the annual extravaganza, but this year’s show is sure to appeal to the smarty-pants, Bust-reading female population too.
The show’s surrealist influences—from Salvador Dali’s Mae West lips to Picasso‘s cubist guitars and Elsa Schiaparelli‘s glove motifs—played on the idea of fantasy, a key component of the Victoria’s Secret boudoir. By creating clothes that reveal all, the VS masterminds craftily continued the trick-question game which Marc Jacobs* posed with his spring collection: When wearing certain garments—be they made by big-name designers or meant for the bedroom—what is left more exposed; Your flesh or your thoughts?
