2007’s Best Fashion Moments

Let the countdown begin! As we usher out 2007 (and make a few wardrobe resolutions for ‘08), it’s time to reflect on the year’s sartorial hits and misses. Below you’ll find a few of the best fashion moments of the past year–people and places that made 2007 tres, tres chic:

#1 Designers Conquered Cities:

From Valentino’s weeklong Roman fete and John Galliano hosting Dior’s 60th anniversary bash at Versailles to the Great China Wall runway show orchestrated by Fendi’s Karl Lagerfeld, the year’s most memorable festivities proved that fashion’s influence knows no bounds.

#2: Trend Alert: Disaster Dishabille

Earlier this year—even before Marc Jacobs debuted his Spring ’08 lingerie-meets-surrealist styles—young headliners started opting for an updated version of dishabille.
Defined as being “the state of being carelessly or partially dressed,” the barely-there trend took hold thanks to some troubled VIPs; As their lives unraveled in ’07 so too did their wardrobes. Britney and Amy seemed to decide, simultaneously, that bras and scraps of lace were suitable cover-ups for all occasions, while sleep-ready sweatsuit ensembles spoke to those stress-filled femmes who have barely the strength left to get out of bed.

#3: Our Sex Goddess Icons Transformed Into Mommies-to-Be

Salma Hayek led the coming-of-age trend at the start of the year, trading her body-hugging red carpet gowns for breezier, more diaphanous looks. Her sensual-meets-maternal style-a natural fit for bombshells with a bun in the oven-was later was later co-opted by expecting glamazons, Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry.

#3: The Beckhams Land in Hollywood

…and with their high-profile arrival, an intriguing new style icon is inducted into the fashion hall of fame. With her distinctive bob, barely-there waist and penchant for Birkins, body-conscious cuts, and oversized shades, Posh Spice blends Barbie-worthy style with a Hollywood housewife’s finesse. The influence of her style echoes in the trend…

#4: Our Favorite Trendsetters Are Sexier, & Glossier Than Ever Before

Gone are the fashion world’s knock-kneed, flat-chested, Twiggy-types. Sultry silhouettes and toned bodies are back in again, as proved by two of the year’s headliners, Victoria Beckham and newly svelte Marc Jacobs.

#6: Sibling Revelry

Two sets of siblings both alike in dignity-and style prowess-debut their own fashion lines. Sienna Miller and her St. Martin’s-trained sister Savannah launch twenty8twelve, a collection of quirky yet wearable tailored pieces. Meanwhile, the Olsen twins expanded their empire by expanding their knit-wear based line, The Row, and unveiling party-frock licensees line, Elizabeth & James, which they named for their younger (and not fashion-inclined) siblings. Surprisingly for some, no boho separates-in the style the stars helped pioneer just a short while ago-were among those unveiled.

#7: Cate Blanchett Keeps on Supporting the Art Crowd
Paralleling the way in which she selects her films, Blanchett continues to gravitate towards designers who prioritize creativity and craftsmanship over pomp & circumstance. Blanchett remains a style icon in artistic circles by wearing understated yet detailed gowns by Boudicca, McQueen, and Balenciaga.

From Reese’s blonde bangs to Katie Holmes’ and Rihanna’s distinctive bobs, the red carpet queens made it clear that in 2007 at least, one’s signature look revolves around fashionable tresses.

#9: TV Stars Rule the Red Carpet

Once upon a time, Tinseltown’s style scene was ruled by blockbuster leading ladies & heir-heads, but in ‘07, a few well-coiffed silver screen stars took over. From Katherine Heigl and her endearingly sweet wardrobe to Ali Larter with her Veronica Lake-inspired glamour, today’s trendsetters can be found on the TV screen–and at the top of designers’ rolodexes.
