Two looks from Rachel Roy’s Fall ‘08 Line
At the risk of seeming a bit less like a know-it-all editor and more like a respectful fan of fashion (I’m both by the way), I’m going to let Rachel Roy’s collection speak for itself. Unveiled today, at sunset, at a spacious studio overlooking the Hudson River, the collection breathes a nonchalant elegance while giving a gentle nod to classic Western aesthetics.
Although several styles come trimmed with colorful feathers or edged with Navajo patterns, never do her richly-hued separates veer toward Pocahontas territory. “I don’t do costume,” Roy said while greeting her many guests, and excitedly pointed out the suede booties she collaborated with Manolo Blahnik on. As for who helped her whip together the feathery accents—from wide ruffled collars to dainty speared brooches—Roy gave credit her creative team “and lots of interns.” To see their handiwork and hers, gaze on.

Designer Erin Fetherston
California-native-turned-Paris-expat-turned-Manhattan-resident Erin Fetherston has had a busy year. Her Target collection hit (and subsequently flew off the shelves) stores, she and her artistic auteur fiancé Hedi Ferjani relocated to lower Manhattan, and, right this second, she’s finishing up a very impressive fall 2008 collection which will be unveiled tomorrow at the Bryant Park tents.
While others may query her on her inspiration and favorite fairytales, Fetherston can talk the real New York talk; specifically real estate, restaurants, and where a woman of impeccable good taste gets her shopping done.
Here, the talented Miss Fetherston (whose tres chic Paris abode has been featured in many a glossy magazine) points out her top 5 favorite home décor shops:
1. ABC Home; shop with Matt Falcone
2. Degournay for wallpaper
3. Erin Martin; she has a store in St. Helena, C.A. and her style is really cool
4. Maurice Villency in NYC
5. Bleu Nature for eco-decor

Take a good look at this runway show clip. Notice anything different? No? Well, nor should you. Those khaki, ivory, and ink-hued ensembles come from names you know well–Derek Lam, Rodarte, Yves Saint Laurent, and Givenchy–BUT these svelte little numbers are fashioned out of sustainable materials. A collaborative effort helmed by the green-minded folks at Barneys New York, eco-friendly fabrics materials house Earth Pledge, and a group of fashion’s biggest names, today’s Future Fashion runway show was subtly persuasive. When rendered in organic materials—from hemp, bamboo, and soy—designers’ artful silhouettes seemed just as beguiling and masterful as they do in more toxic threads. Today’s show reinforced the fact that using sustainable materials doesn’t mean the final product is any less tempting. In a way, the show was a bit like eyeing a gooey slice of cake and then being informed that it’s gluten free—i.e. highly encouraging of healthy habits.

Rebel Yell Football Tees
This Sunday, while the fashion crowd swarms the Bryant Park tents—all decked out in sartorial cocktails comprised of two parts top-shelf designer label, one part H&M flair and a splash of bright patents—the rest of the country will be getting comfy on communal couches getting ready for the Superbowl. As the most social spectator sporting event of the year, wearing the right gear is a sizable concern for some gals. Fortunately Rebel Yell has the athletic aesthetic covered: The sportswear label helmed by Andi Ballard specializes in, among other chic casuals, flirty football jerseys. To channel fashionable football fanatics Jessica Simpson and Gisele Bündchen on over to Revolve Clothing to score one for yourself.

Can’t wait till the shows begin? To get your fashion fix check out these sketches from a few of New York fashion’s favorite names and stay tuned for more:

Don’t recognize this last one? No, you’re not behind on your WWD readings: This sketch comes from Ludmilla, a Romanian designer who entered our Be Discovered: Design a Dress competition. Unfortunately, since she’s not in the US Ludmilla isn’t eligible to enter, but if you’re over age 18, a U.S. citizen living in these stellar 50 states of ours, and fancy yourself a frock star, YOU ARE. To find out more (including the all-important winnings) go here.

Here’s a few names to add to fashion week’s VIP list: ’90s greats Guinevere von Seenus, Amber Valetta, Shalom Harlow, will join Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam and today’s other top catwalkers at the FashionFuture show. Hosted by the forward-thinking folks at Barneys New York, the runway presentation will feature eco-friendly threads from Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein, Derek Lam, Marc Jacobs, among other favorites. Stay tuned for the verdict on which of the shows inspiring visions (the girls or the garments) are more beguiling.

There are plenty of reasons to aspire to be an American Express Platinum card holder: the way it enables a Barney’s shopping binge, the way it makes globe-trotting hassle-free, the whole fancy-dancyness of it all, etc. Now, the chance to score choice seats at New York fashion week ranks high on the Platinum card’s appealing list of attributes. During New York fashion week card-carrying members of the charging elite can take in the shows at Bryant Park from the cushy Amex Skybox, steal some one-on-one time with hair and make-up experts, and even catch a sneak peek of Peter Som’s latest collection. Pretty chic perks huh? But Bryant Park security better watch out: The Amex Platinum just may be the new backstage pass.

While some designers only show their affection for the art and music scene at benefit events, Elise Øverland’s connection to those creative circles runs deeper than most. The Norwegian-born New York-base designer has long outfitted her downtown pals and arts section all-stars (including artist Hope Atherton and Elephant’s Diego Garcia) with elegantly rebellious leather, lambskin, and silk threads. While she prepares to unveil her stage-ready fall collection (which she’ll show later this week as one of Ecco Domani’s elite circle of designers), Øverland reveals what sounds like music to her ears. It’s no surprise–considering her classic rock aesthetic–that more than a few hall of famers top her list:
Elise Øverland’s Top 10 Iconic Rock Bands
• Led Zeppelin
• Pink Floyd
• The Doors
• Rolling Stones
• Jimi Hendrix
• David Bowie
• Steven Tyler/ Aerosmith (He’s the most amazing stage performer)
• Elvis
• Os Mutantes (a quite interesting band emerging out of the Brazilian psychedelic 60’s movement)
• White Stripes (one of my favorites as far as newer bands)

Agent Provocateur Esme thong
Oh la-la...I’ve received a flood of Valentine’s Day gift ideas in my inbox lately (heart-shaped cuticle files! Playboy Bunny lingerie! cloud-printed satin sheets!) from a variety of sources, but few are as appealing and straight-forward as the announcement Completely Bare recently sent out. The hi-tech spa known for its masterful hair removal treatments has a promotion which offers “when purchasing a bikini wax before January 31, 2008 you get one FREE. Buy one now and use the other for Valentine’s Day, before that summer vacation, or just whenever since you have a year to use this freebie!” There’s a cornucopia of wax styles to choose from, including the “Relax Wax” which comes with an application of mild numbing cream and the “Flair” which features Swarovski crystal embellishments. The final results seem so well suited to V-Day themed sweet nothings, here’s hoping that the next CB promotion includes a gift certificate to Agent Provocateur...
To see a few chic Valentine’s Day gifts that aren’t geared toward the boudoir, check this out, otherwise, better book an appointment today at Completely Bare:
