The Best-Dressed Crowd Goes for Conservative Chic

Blame it on the fact that the writers strike has kept more than a few red carpets from being rolled out…OR that disaster dishabille has the trend pendulum swinging in the other direction…OR that the current recession has made bling seem a tad Marie Antoinette-y excessive, but conservative chic is back in a big way.

Instead of high-wattage accessories, jewel-tone gowns, and revealing cuts, many a flashbulb magnet and magazine covergirl has opted for the subtle, fuss-free route when navigating the current sartorial scene. Best-dressed all-stars including Golden Globe winner Marion Cotillard, the worshipable Christy Turlington, and the inimitable Ashley Olsen have all donned simple, noir separates at recent high-profile events. Even Beyonce—she of the mercury-colored gowns and diamante jeans—made waves this weekend in Milan when she turned up at Giorgio Armani’s men’s show clad in a simple black dress, leather jacket, and newly-darkened chestnut mane. Whatever the reason behind this burgeoning trend, it seems that glittery spectacles (be they ensembles or events) may just be a thing of the past.
