The Future of Fashion…Looks A Lot Like Today’s Stuff

Take a good look at this runway show clip. Notice anything different? No? Well, nor should you. Those khaki, ivory, and ink-hued ensembles come from names you know well–Derek Lam, Rodarte, Yves Saint Laurent, and Givenchy–BUT these svelte little numbers are fashioned out of sustainable materials. A collaborative effort helmed by the green-minded folks at Barneys New York, eco-friendly fabrics materials house Earth Pledge, and a group of fashion’s biggest names, today’s Future Fashion runway show was subtly persuasive. When rendered in organic materials—from hemp, bamboo, and soy—designers’ artful silhouettes seemed just as beguiling and masterful as they do in more toxic threads. Today’s show reinforced the fact that using sustainable materials doesn’t mean the final product is any less tempting. In a way, the show was a bit like eyeing a gooey slice of cake and then being informed that it’s gluten free—i.e. highly encouraging of healthy habits.
