For the May 2009 cover of Essence magazine Michelle Obama once again went for an affordable all-American brand. The First Lady posed with her mother Marian Robinson in Talbots’ rose print silk dress, which is currently available for $169 at Talbots.com and a Hanii Y green and blue cardigan. ~Nola Weinstein

Her mother looks great for a 71 year old woman. I love how Michelle can put on anything and make inexpensive clothes look like a million dollars — LUV MICHELLE!

Oh, the knockoff of the Thakoon dress she wore to one of the debates during the election.

The top half of the dress looks completely diferent though – look at the neckline and the straps.

@ nancy o’donnell & all others who doubt the dress on the cover is actually Talbots:
for high profile magazine cover shoots it is not unheard of to have a garment altered to be most flattering on the specific person. The picture of the dress in the Talbots magazine shows it with a more modest neckline, which makes sense because of the Talbot’s demographic. Because Michelle Obama is at the younger spectrum of the Talbots demographic, it is appropriate and not suprising that she would not only individualize the look, but tailor it to better suit her age and body type. This is just an example of the versatility of the Talbots brand. I think this is great!
