Modo’s Green Movement

alfredo bark modo
Modo Frames

Talk about shade-y business: Starting this week, with every purchase of their sleek sunglasses, Modo will give a cool, shade-giving tree back to Mother Nature. The initiative, One Frame, One Tree (not to be confused with E-photoframe’s similar environmental project) is a result of Modo’s partnership with Trees for the Future and the Arbor Day Foundation which is aimed at improving the globe’s eco-system and helping developing countries restore their barren lands. So trek on over to your nearest store and snag a pair–be it from Modo’s own collection or Derek Lam and Philip Lim’s line–to score a look that’s stylish, SPF-safe, and environmentally sound.–Claudia Crousillat

Haute J.Crew

jcrew globetrotter
Globetrotter for J.Crew, $2,400

The $2,400 suitcase is a rare commodity to come across online, much less on J.Crew.com. And yet, if you frequent the preppy e-emporium as often as I do, you’ll notice that there’s a new line of luxe luggage to be found at Le Jah-Crew. The Globetrotter for J.Crew collection–which features sleek valises by the famous, 111-year old London label. While the collection’s spendy tags might surprise some shoppers, it’s a small price to pay for such a timeless, iconic accent. (Just ask H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II, who took the tony, sturdy carry-alls on her honeymoon.) The Globetrotter line is just one of many chic collaborations J.Crew has in store for us (pun intended) during the upcoming seasons. Stay tuned for more–and just to be safe, prepare your credit cards now.

And the Preppy Award Goes to…

tommy hilfiger sperry topsider
Tommy Hilfiger by Sperry Top-Sider

While not 100% sure, we here at GlamChic have a sneaking suspicion that Tommy Hilfiger is RSSing GlamChic–and reading it faithfully. (Like you are, let’s say.) How else does one explain this new, all-American image that popped up in our inbox today–mere hours after our top 10 country club-chic labels post debuts? Behold the Tommy Hilfiger by Sperry Top-Sider boat shoe. Slip them on, scoop up a copy of The Great Gatsby and consider summer officially kicked-off. $75 at select Tommy Hilfiger stores including Manhattan’s Soho and D.C.’s Georgetown locations.

Exotic Accents

Roumeguère designer
Carolyn Roumeguère in Kenya

As any city-dweller can tell you, the arrival of warmer temperatures has a way of sparking one’s sense of wanderlust. Earlier this week, a few globally-minded cosmpolitans gathered to ogle at Carolyn Roumeguère’s exotic, Kenyan-inspired bijoux at the West Village’s Urban Zen. The boutique, which stocks earthy apparel to benefit Donna Karan’s charity, the Urban Zen Initiative, played hostess to the French jewelry designer and her cases of sparkling Maasai chokers and ruby droplet chandelier earrings. Carolyn, a longtime friend of Karan’s who grew up in Kenya threading beads as a child, said that part of the money raised by the event would go to help the Enkutoto Trust – a project to teach Massai children how to preserve their culture. “It’s about the bigger picture. It’s not about fashion seasons. It’s about things that will last forever,” Roumeguère said.–Jennifer Jackson

Modo Makes Waves Online

valentina modo shades
Modo’s Valentina Shades

As the mercury inches upwards, remember it’s not just swimsuit season that’s approaching–sunglass season is about to arrive too. And with UV rays intensifying by the day (muchos gracias global warming), it’s vital to protect your peepers from damage. Look for shades with polarized lenses, like the ones from luxury sunglass-label Modo, the genius behind the sleek new shades from Derek Lam and 3.1 Phillip Lim. The house just started selling its high-style, low-profile designs online (www.modo.com)–including Tretorn’s artful specs and Modo’s own cheeky Valentinas style–so you can peruse the goods from your safe, sun-free abode home instead of risking a shopping trip sans spectacles. –Jennifer Jackson

Toms Step Over into Chucks Territory

chucks toms

Are Toms the new Chucks? As evidenced at the recent Coachella festival, it appears that Toms Shoes are going toe-to-toe with Converse for the indie scene’s favorite footwear award. For decades, classic Chuck Taylors have been the go-to sneaker for punks, skaters and other cooler-than-thou folks. But recently, Toms—with their simple design and impressively altruistic mission—have become a favorite of the culturally engaged set. Can an iconic shoe be fully eclipsed by a sure-footed newbie? To answer this truly perplexing question for yourself, take a gander at the street-style shots (grass trend photos?) on Elle.com to check out this trend on the rise:

Christian Louboutin Goes on Holiday

louboutin shoes holiday
Christian Louboutin for One & Only Resorts

Round this time of year, warm-weather getaways are a hot commodity in every stylish circle, from the sorority scene to the globe-trotting elite. Come June, when the majority of sun-seekers return from their jaunts with tan lines and tales of umbrella-topped drinks, a select—and decidedly fashionable—few may come home with rare Christian Louboutins. The designer has created an exclusive line for One&Only Resorts, a luxury hotel line which has properties in Mauritius, Dubai, Bahamas, and Palmilla, Mexico. (Check them out here; Let’s hope the designer worked in trade!) While they don’t exactly replicate the feeling of sand slipping through your toe, Louboutin’s ribboned wedges are guaranteed to transport you to a sunny, exotic locale—in your mind at least—which should tide you over ’till the real summer heat waves hit.

SJP Hearts Statement Necklaces

sjp necklace beamon
Sarah Jessica Parker wears Erickson Beamon necklaces at last night’s Point Foundation Honors The Arts at Capitale,NYC

While not the kind of die-hard SJP worshipper that some of my colleagues are (the most devoted of the bunch has a photo of Carrie Bradshaw’s expansive closet as her screensaver. For reals! That is love!), I can appreciate her styling prowess. For instance, last night she stepped out (along with her Sex & the City cohorts and West Village neighbors Gwyneth Paltrow and Helena Christensen) wearing a simple satin dress and three bold necklaces from Erickson Beamon.

Now, the statement necklace trend has hanging around for some time, dripping off runway all-stars and red-carpet regulars with a high fashion I.Q. —like SJP herself—for good reason: One easy piece can gussy up every thing from jeans to simple shift dresses. Plus, the kookier the piece, the less you have to worry about finding a garment of the same hue, era, etc. (As and added bonus, long lariats like SJP’s tend to elongate the figure—a trick that comes in handy when you’ve got paparazzi nipping at your Louboutin heels!) Should you want to channel her highness on your next SATC-infused evening (You know, when you slip into some multi-hued get-up and transform into one cocktail-swilling, snarktastic flirt. Don’t deny it!), try one or two of these cosmopolitan stunners instead of the locket/name in script/charm of your homestate necklace you usually wear:

Go Green: Hayden-Harnett’s Eco Tote

hayden harnett eco tote

By now you know that organic farming has replaced DJing as the most covetable vocation for today’s tastemakers. It’s no surprise then that supporting arcadian do-gooders is also all the rage. For example, the forward-thinking folks at Hayden-Harnett are donating proceeds from their cheery eco-friendly tote go to FarmAid, a non-profit which promotes local, organic, and sustainable farming through education and training. So not only are you avoiding those loathsome plastic bags if you put your pesticide-free veggies in this HH tote, you also get to feel like some part of you actually planted and harvested them yourself!
