Casual Observations: TV Patterns & Trapper Keepers

patterntv

Good-bye neo-Goth, hello old-school graphics. For our second installment of Casual Observations, I’d like to turn your attention to the recent resurgence of TV test patterns and Trapper Keeper-style graphics. Both feature bold colors, distinctive patterns, and conjure up bygone eras which many of us associate with a sense of joyous naïveté. (Remember when you actually wrote on paper and had to turn the non-cable TV on by manually turning a dial?) And as a quick glance at a few of today’s pop-culture artifacts and sartorial backdrops will demonstrate, these iconic graphics are current favorites of today’s taste-makers:

First, take a look at Apple’s latest Ipod commercial:

Then compare it with the intro credits to everyone’s favorite ’80s guilty-pleasure, Saved by the Bell:

Both recall your ’80s school supplies, no? Surely you remember Trapper Keepers and their distinctive geo-patterns…

trapper keeper 80s

Meanwhile, back in Manhattan, savvy window-dressers are zooming in on the same ’80s graphics as well as TV test graphics, as they make a perfect back-drop for the season’s vivid, New Wave-inspired pieces…

Bergdorf Goodman, Fifth Avenue:

Diesel, 14th Street @ Union Square:

Note the color palette and gradient pattern in the backdrop of the store’s “Diesel TV” window, and how similar it is to the Ipod commercial. Nice how it all comes full-circle isn’t it? (That’s what the fashion demi-monde likes to call A Moment.) Considering the ’80s TV inspiration behind this nascent trend, it seems fitting to now say, “Stay tuned for more…”

Beyonce’s Wedding Dress

beyonce jay z wedding

This weekend, rumors swirled both online and in NYC that Beyoncé  & Jay-Z tied the knot last Friday. Details, denials, and guests’ camera phone snaps are scant, as is confirmation of most important aspect of the VIP event: Which designer did Beyoncé choose to whip up her wedding gown? While the world wonders what kind of ivory confection the star selected, we couldn’t help but imagine her in a few of our favorite fashionista wedding gowns:

While You Were Sleeping…

…the cool kids partied at Gucci’s gigantic Unicef fundraiser at the United Nations–a locale which had surely never looked so stylish. Madonna and fam headlined the event while Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Salma Hayek, among many others, all turned out for the event, which included a performance by Rihanna. More could be said about the high-profile affair, but when inspecting the VIP wardrobe choices is the first priority, why waste words? Gaze on below:

Superbowl Style: What to Wear on Game Day

rebel yell tees
Rebel Yell Football Tees

This Sunday, while the fashion crowd swarms the Bryant Park tents—all decked out in sartorial cocktails comprised of two parts top-shelf designer label, one part H&M flair and a splash of bright patents—the rest of the country will be getting comfy on communal couches getting ready for the Superbowl. As the most social spectator sporting event of the year, wearing the right gear is a sizable concern for some gals. Fortunately Rebel Yell has the athletic aesthetic covered: The sportswear label helmed by Andi Ballard specializes in, among other chic casuals, flirty football jerseys. To channel fashionable football fanatics Jessica Simpson and Gisele Bündchen on over to Revolve Clothing to score one for yourself.

Get Waisted

barneys loomstate jeans
Loomstate for Barneys Green Reflection Jean

A friend of mine recently asked me where she could find the perfect pair of high-waisted, stiff-denim, slightly-flared but not in that kitschy, potentially self-tripping style. I pointed her north and sent her off to Barneys to scoop up a pair of the new Loomstate for Barneys Green Reflection jeans. This brand-spanking-new style sits just above the natural waist, comes in a pared-down ’70s-inspired silhouette–and is made out of organic cotton. (What, you expect the uber-boutique that’s going all-out on the eco-friendly front to offer up toxic threads? Get with it.)

Now in honor of this high-waist season, I’d like to take a moment to pay homage to the quintessential ’70s film, Dazed & Confused. Me being an ’80s baby myself, the film defined my description of flower children–and I’m betting it did the same for more than a few of you. I spotted this cheesy-yet-captivating “Where are they now?” Dazed & Confused story online today. Take a quick flip-thru to indulge in some star-spangled nostalgia.

Clothing Conundrum: Party Lines

Regretfully, I wasn’t at last night’s Louis Vuitton-hosted kick-off gala for the Murakami exhibition at the Los Angeles MoCa (my invite must have gotten lost in the post). However, my lack of attendance isn’t preventing me from doing some wall-flower-style speculating about the guests’ attire. Mainly my musings center around a 21st-century etiquette concern: When going to a fashion-sponsored event, should you wear the designer/label of honor? Many would be inclined to say yes, while rebels—like Courtney Love who brazenly sported a studded Burberry dress at YSL’s recent runway show—think otherwise.

kerry washington vuitton murakami

The Vuitton event seemed to be a 50/50 split: Christina Ricci, Kerry Washington, and Dita Von Teese opted for subdued frocks from the label’s fall line. (Which led me to another question: If you’re borrowing designer duds, why not go all out? Where are all those feather duster gowns?)

Meanwhile, Cindy Crawford showed up in a leopard-print Dolce & Gabanna-feeling number, and Kanye West’s main squeeze, Alexis Phifer wore a fantastic photo-print dress (I should know the designer behind this, but I’m blanking right now). The quandary is this: Do you get all brown-nosey and wear whatever bold-face name is printed on the invitation or do you pull on any old party dress and show off your personal style? Where o where is a modern-day Emily Post when you need her?

What To Wear On A Date…

Here’s the thing about dating: No two dates are the same. The setting, the stage of the relationship, and oh yeah, the person you’re sharing cocktails with never form the same combination more than once. Chances are that you try to take all of these variables into account when deciding what to wear on a romantic rendezvous, a thought process which can lead to a migraine, hair-tearing madness, or worse. Which is why the ole straight-forward What to Wear on a Date style advice story just doesn’t do the trick.

And that’s where I come in.

Every week, I’ll outline a dating situation—hypothetical of course, but don’t blame me if it borders on eerily familiar territory—and supply some suggested attire.

Now, granted this isn’t the usual GlamChic fare, but admit it; you’re intrigued. And the second you stop looking for outside opinions on your sartorial decisions, I’ll cease to offer mine. Until that day comes, read on, consider yourself saved—and feel free to email me with your own “hypothetical” quandary:

BBALL BAR

SCENARIOFirst things first: This is not a date. Or at least you don’t think it is. It’s a “group thing,” which you think is maybe the number 1 romantic buzz kill of all time, but regardless you’ve agreed to suck it up and meet the ever-expanding gang at the local sports bar to watch the playoffs or whatever it is. Your reward? The opportunity to spend more time with J; a die-hard Red Sox fan, a bespectacled advertising VP, and your current friend-crush.

You’ve known J for a few years; you went to the same college but didn’t know each other then. (How that could have happened—considering your quaintly Arcadian alma mater—you don’t know.) When you first met, after graduation, you had been dating some debonair young law student who was Boring with a capital B, but really, ridiculously cute. You thought J was nice and smart and all, but a tad too nerdy for your taste.

Now, a few years later—and with the experience of a few more lame lawyer-type boyfriends under your, ahem, belt—J’s low-key geekdom has become distractingly attractive. But you’re afraid that he still considers you an old-school chum, one who only dates the dashing and dumb. You want him to see you as someone more than a friend, and someone who is as thoughtful and down-to-earth as he is. And you need him to start seeing this way A.S.A.P. before the sexual tension (which you think is SO there) kills you. You know that clothes clearly don’t matter to him—you recently saw him wearing a corduroy L.L.Bean button-down and not in the ironic, hipster way—but you’re hoping to catch his eye somehow.

SOLUTIONUnfortunately for you, baseball will be the only thing on this boy’s mind tonight. But since you’re crushing so hard, I know that won’t stop you from trying to make a good impression. In that case, take cues from TV’s most unlikely style icon, My Boys’ PJ Franklin. The sportswriter character is forever surrounded by boys, and her laid-back approach to fashion is something to strive for given your current predicament.

Don’t bother with anything frilly or flirty; you’ll only look out of place in the neighborhood saloon. Go for cute cotton top in a dark color. (Brights scream LOOK AT ME while subdued shades can speak volumes about the wearer’s low-key confidence.)

Hudson Jeans
Hudson Jeans, Couture Candy

Well-tailored jeans fit the bill, but make sure you like how your rear looks in them as the whole bar—including J—will get a good look when you ask the bartender for a fresh pitcher.

Belted Sweater
Saks Sweater

Since it’s still officially fall, skip the jacket and slip on a cozy sweater. That way, even if nothing happens with J, you can channel Ali McGraw in Love Story to get all tingly.

bottle tap necklace
Thorn Tab Necklace, Shopbop

Skip the bedazzled accents; You don’t want glittering gems to distract anyone from the bar’s glossy flat screens. But if you must, try a whimsical necklace to get conversations going during commercial breaks.

Edelman Flats
Edelman Flats, Urban Outfitters

Flats flats flats; it doesn’t matter what color, make, or model just slip them on. Sporting heels in a baseball-watching bar scene makes you 1)Look uber-obvious about your reason for swinging in the ole sports bar 2) liable to receive a round of well-deserved teasing from your aforementioned friends.

red sox hat
And whatever you do, don’t wear a Red Sox hat unless you’ve got a Massachusetts license or are card-carrying member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; You may play with a boy’s emotions, but you can’t pretend to like their team.

Expert Advice: Richard Ostell on the Working Wardrobe

Sunday nights are known to bring on a bad case of the blues. The frequency of this nocturnal depression increases in the summer, not only because it marks the end of a sultry summer weekend, but also because many of us come face to face with a fear we’ve managed to repress for a day or two: Not knowing wear to work during these warm-weather months.

Richard Ostell Liz Claiborne
Liz Claiborne’s Richard Ostell

With fluctuating temperatures—thanks to those heavily AC’d interiors—and equally inconstant casual dress codes, figuring out which summer style is going to come off as successful-looking as you are is one of the most perplexing clothing conundrums out there. Fortunately, we’ve got Richard Ostell—Creative director of Liz Claiborne—to help steer us in the right sartorial direction. Read on for his tips & style shortcuts; they’re guaranteed to banish at least some of those Sunday blues. (For the others, squeezing in one last margarita before Monday might just do the trick.) X S.C.

Who is a good role model today for how working women should dress?
Jackie O and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and today, Julianne Moore embody the kind of clean, simple style I believe make great style role models for working women.

What item, style, or trend, is totally off limits for the workplace?
Anything that is too bare or revealing, or any work-out clothes are totally off limits for the workplace.

What are 5 key pieces a working woman should have in her wardrobe & why? Tailored options that you can dress up or down. It’s all about these basics so that you can then get creative with fashion pieces or one great accessory.

1) A Great fitting trouser
2) A Fantastic white Shirt
3) A Tailored versatile jacket
4) A Clean tailored skirt
5) A Fabulous bag (especially one that does not look like a work bag but holds it all)

What are some office outfit DON’Ts?
Nothing see-through, too tight, too revealing, obviously sexy, or fashion that distracts from who you are as a professional.

How do you feel about flats at work? Sandals?
I absolutely love flats for work! They are so fashionable, chic and timeless. And I also adore flat sandals, today they are a wardrobe basic. They just need to be worn with the right outfit.
What’s your ideal Casual Friday ensemble?
For summer, a great casual Friday look for a working woman is white wide-leg cotton pants, tan leather sandals, a white cotton T or short sleeve shirt and a great pair of earrings.

What’s a good alternative to or way to dress up a…
…Tailored Blazer
Alternative: A great sweater with a wide belt
Dress up: By wearing nothing underneath , just jewelry

…Tailored Trouser
Alternative: A really great wide leg pant
Dress up: With a fab silk white charmeuse blouse

…Knee-Length Skirt
Alternative: A slim crop pant
Dress up: With a fashion stocking and great high heel

Any general tips for how to make an office outfit more up to date?

A woman can update her office outfits with the accessories and the right fashion pieces she chooses to mix with the basics. My advice is don’t try to do too much, pick one fashion piece or accessory and keep your look clean.

What item should the working woman..
..invest in?
Tailoring
…splurge on? Accessories
..by multiples of? Great fitting pants and white shirts

What’s the most important accessory for a working woman & why?

It’s not about what gets the most attention, it’s about what works best for you and how that makes you feel. I think the most important accessories for working women are her bag, and shoes, but don’t ignore the watch. As my mother used to say “You can really tell a great deal about someone by their shoes and watch.”

Free Style Tips 129-134: 5 Ways to Look Long & Lean

Sure all those runway strutters are skinny to start off with, but with a few styling tricks, even everyday Janes can look as lithe as models. Here’s how:

Marc Jacobs
Marc Jacobs Fall 2007

1) When pumping up the volume, drop the waist.
Come September, summer’s breezy baby-dolls will be pushed to the back of the closet while tailored tops and blowsy skirts will take their place. To elongate the silhouette, pair a full skirt with a slim-fitting top that hits at the hipbone.

Proenza Schouler
Proenza Schouler Fall 2007

2) Cinch it, cinch it real good.
Forget about logging hours at the gym: A well-placed belt can take 5 pounds off anyone’s frame. Avoid narrow styles or those fashioned out of fabric, as they tend to emphasize love handles instead of hiding them.

Bad Ankle Straps
3) Avoid wearing ankle-biters, except those in nude or metallic hues.
Dark ankle straps are sure way to make legs look stumpy–trashy too. For sylphlike gams slip into neutral colored shoes which seem to lengthen the leg.

Kors Runway Look
Michael Kors Fall 2007

Calvin Ankle Booties
Same goes for fall’s booties: Wear with dark or opaque tights to avoid coming up short (legged).

Philip Lim TIghts
Philip Lim Fall 2007

Carolina Herrera Gloves
Carolina Herrera Fall 2007

4) Get a (slender) arm up with sleek leather gloves.
Try the season’s cropped sleeve jackets—fashioned in fur or any other luxe material—with a dark-colored glove to channel a dainty Hitchcock heroine look. A pussy-bow blouse further slinkifies the style.

Marchesa
Marchesa Fall 2007

5) Layer on the long lariats.
Ropes of beads add inches and intrigue to any outfit. A long scarf—with the tails dangling just below the waist—has the same effect.

Full-Figure Fashion Finds

fULL-FIGURE STYLE

Here’s a fun fashion game: Think of your favorite designer separate, track it down online, and see if it’s offered in a size larger than an American 12. As you’ll find, many clicks later, fashionable separates sized in the full-figure range are few and far between.

For many of you, this revelation is nothing new, but nonetheless I thought it worth pointing out because puzzlingly enough, the clothing conundrum hasn’t been fully addressed by industry VIPS. (When recently visiting a fashion powerhouse I spotted a sign in the elevators asking their design team to come up with a new brand that filled a yet-untapped niche: Surely runway-worthy separates for the size 12+ crowd would work? Instead, said company decided to take the eco-friendly route. )

Jennifer Hudson

Anyhow, this morning I spotted a photo of the charming Jennifer Hudson wearing a Foley & Corinna dress. I’m familiar with the dress—and you should be too—as it’s a signature Foley style, one guaranteed to flatter and sex up its wearer, whether they’re curvy or not. Seeing Hudson looking so stunning and stylish made me think that a list of designers that offer their creations in a variety of sizes would make for a handy shopping guide.

I then encountered the aforementioned problem. Even the designers that full-figured stars sport for red carpet appearances don’t always carry their styles in all sizes. What’s a fashion-savvy girl that needs a size larger than 12 to do?

My first suggestion would be to head to Macy’s—either online or in real life. Though best known for their parade, the department store boasts an equally impressive “women’s” section. (Why any of the terms—women’s, full-figured, plus-sized, and others—are employed…especially when a large percentage of American women are over size 12…is a discussion for another post.)

Nordstrom has an amazing selection too, especially of Michael Kors pieces. (As if his witty Project Runway antics weren’t reason enough to adore him, Mr. Kors’ full-figure styles are sure to attract a whole new roster of fans this fall.)

The secret to making any jersey dress into something special? Killer heels. And FYI, Rachel Pally, the designer of this flirty frock, recently launched a plus-size line. Score her stuff at Nordstrom.

Dark Jeans Newport News
The ultimate fall essential: High-waist, dark tailored jeans.

Also, check out Newport News. Now, before you fashion snobs move onto the next post, give these pieces another glance. A statuesque college friend of mine from a very well-to-do family often wore NPN from head to toe. And thanks to her sophisticated styling, (classic silhouettes paired with luxe jewels) she usually looked better than her more petite sister, who was without fail, perpetually clad in country club classics.

And so ends the first installment of our full-figure fashion finds. If you spot more, please send them my way so I can spread the word. X S.C.
