Accessory Spotlight: ONE OCTOBER

ONE OCTOBER clutch

What do celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Jennifer Aniston, Shannen Doherty, and Amy Lee have in common? They’re all fans of ONE OCTOBER, a new accessory and handbag company based out of Malibu, California. The up-and-coming line applies a fresh take on classic shapes. Roxana Zal and Naomi Stokeld, the designers of the brand, integrate cast off salmon skin from fish farms to create environmentally conscious pieces. Their goal: to produce a style that is timeless and edgy at the same time. The line starts at $77 with skinny salmon wrap bracelets (just right for layering!) and caps out at about $450 for the largest clutches. FYI: Patent leather against salmon is a gorgeous contrast. Just take a look at the rich burgundy handbag above. I’m craving it already. Most of the stores are located in California so if you’re in the area head to www.oneoctober.net for listings. You can also find some of their merchandise on www.bleuclothing.com. Remember, a change of season means a change of accessories. Then again, we’ll always find a reason to shop, won’t we?-Maria Denardo

Modo’s Green Movement

alfredo bark modo
Modo Frames

Talk about shade-y business: Starting this week, with every purchase of their sleek sunglasses, Modo will give a cool, shade-giving tree back to Mother Nature. The initiative, One Frame, One Tree (not to be confused with E-photoframe’s similar environmental project) is a result of Modo’s partnership with Trees for the Future and the Arbor Day Foundation which is aimed at improving the globe’s eco-system and helping developing countries restore their barren lands. So trek on over to your nearest store and snag a pair–be it from Modo’s own collection or Derek Lam and Philip Lim’s line–to score a look that’s stylish, SPF-safe, and environmentally sound.–Claudia Crousillat

Go Green: Hayden-Harnett’s Eco Tote

hayden harnett eco tote

By now you know that organic farming has replaced DJing as the most covetable vocation for today’s tastemakers. It’s no surprise then that supporting arcadian do-gooders is also all the rage. For example, the forward-thinking folks at Hayden-Harnett are donating proceeds from their cheery eco-friendly tote go to FarmAid, a non-profit which promotes local, organic, and sustainable farming through education and training. So not only are you avoiding those loathsome plastic bags if you put your pesticide-free veggies in this HH tote, you also get to feel like some part of you actually planted and harvested them yourself!

Get Green: Driftwood Bangles

bangles drift new

In honor of April being Earth Month and all, we’re celebrating here at GlamChic by showcasing one eco-chic product a day. First off, take note of driftwood bangles by the thoughtful folks at SURevolution. The NYC & Bogota-based company prides itself (rightfully so) on using sustainable materials and working with many native craftsmen (and women!) in South America. For spring, SUR has unveiled a line of gold and silver covered driftwood bangles–which cleverly repurposes Mother Nature’s handiwork, and provides a price-friendly answer to the jewelry lovers current plight: the rising price of gold. For more on SUR go here, or check out Vivre.

Listmaker: Jesse Kamm

Designer Jesse Kamm and pal Kate Schelter wear Kamm’s spring line

Today’s Listmaker, designer Jesse Kamm, has one of those enviable, Sundance Channel-worthy lifestyles. The L.A.-based designer fashions her cool-girl separates out of hand-printed silks, cruises through Hollywood in a custom bio-diesel Mercedes Benz, and spends half the year in Panama, on an eco-conscious reserve she and her husband recently purchased with actress Alison Lohman and other green-minded pals. Occasionally, much to the good fortune of her Manhattan-bound friends and fans, Kamm wafts into New York to show off her latest line. Unfortunately I missed her most recent visit (thanks a lot, fashion week flu) but managed to extract her well-earned wisdom on why sometimes it’s best to skip the border and head south. Get ready to get jealous:

Top 10 reason to live in Panama (Part time:)

1 Waking up at 7 am to surf for hours with no one else on the water, is a pretty centering way to start your day..

2. $. 50 “Panama” Cerveza’s

3. Hiking around in the jungle you may stumble upon a howler monkey, a crocodile, a boa constrictor, or a blue morpho butterfly….Keeps you on your toes, and reminds you that you are alive.

4. The water is always about 84 degrees, so even on a cloudy day you can sport your new bikini.

5. The humidity keeps your skin beautifully hydrated, and toxins moving out your pores.

6. No cell service keeps a gal in a deep state of relaxation: I highly suggest it!

7. Having fewer amenities to fill up your day, allows your mind the ability to open, and spawns great creativity.

8. Central America produces some of the best coffee in the world……yummmm!

9. There are no fast-food joints or strip-malls.

10. It is beautiful.

The Future of Fashion…Looks A Lot Like Today’s Stuff

Take a good look at this runway show clip. Notice anything different? No? Well, nor should you. Those khaki, ivory, and ink-hued ensembles come from names you know well–Derek Lam, Rodarte, Yves Saint Laurent, and Givenchy–BUT these svelte little numbers are fashioned out of sustainable materials. A collaborative effort helmed by the green-minded folks at Barneys New York, eco-friendly fabrics materials house Earth Pledge, and a group of fashion’s biggest names, today’s Future Fashion runway show was subtly persuasive. When rendered in organic materials—from hemp, bamboo, and soy—designers’ artful silhouettes seemed just as beguiling and masterful as they do in more toxic threads. Today’s show reinforced the fact that using sustainable materials doesn’t mean the final product is any less tempting. In a way, the show was a bit like eyeing a gooey slice of cake and then being informed that it’s gluten free—i.e. highly encouraging of healthy habits.
