Couture Slouch Nesting Dolls, $50, Etsy
My friend Joanna pointed these chic nesting dolls out to me today, which helped me out by 1) giving me a cute item to post about this A.M. and 2) finding the perfect B-day present for a fashiony aesthete I know. In addition to channeling the same kind of retro glamour that appears in AMC’s Mad Men (another stylish treat that will make my day when it comes around again) the old-school styles look vaguely familiar to those that just premiered on Louis Vuitton’s runway. Priced at just $50, cozying up to the nesting dolls is far easier than slipping into Vuitton’s pricey (gorgeous) threads.

Rebel Yell Football Tees
This Sunday, while the fashion crowd swarms the Bryant Park tents—all decked out in sartorial cocktails comprised of two parts top-shelf designer label, one part H&M flair and a splash of bright patents—the rest of the country will be getting comfy on communal couches getting ready for the Superbowl. As the most social spectator sporting event of the year, wearing the right gear is a sizable concern for some gals. Fortunately Rebel Yell has the athletic aesthetic covered: The sportswear label helmed by Andi Ballard specializes in, among other chic casuals, flirty football jerseys. To channel fashionable football fanatics Jessica Simpson and Gisele Bündchen on over to Revolve Clothing to score one for yourself.

Actress Nicole LaLiberte as seen in NY Mag’s Look Book
One of the recent New York Magazine Look Book subjects set herself apart from her predecessors by citing an unlikely yet worthy fashion icon; Romancing the Stone’s Kathleen Turner.

Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone
No doubt many a hip, ’80s-loving downtown romantic will second the actress’s thoughtful choice but it’s important to remember that Turner’s floor-grazing shirt-dresses and poet blouses have long been a wardrobe essentials for a surprisingly large sartorial demographic: the suburban mom.

Linen shirt-dress from Newport News
Readily available via catalog (Chadwick’s of Boston, Newport News, etc) in a rainbow of soft rock shades, the monochromatic ensembles speak to those whose own sultry peak coincided with Turner’s. It’s no surprise that today, the children of the Me Decade moms–who pioneered madras shifts and lace-trim blouses–are seeking out the same sort of styles they once eyed in their mothers’ wardrobes.

Loomstate for Barneys Green Reflection Jean
A friend of mine recently asked me where she could find the perfect pair of high-waisted, stiff-denim, slightly-flared but not in that kitschy, potentially self-tripping style. I pointed her north and sent her off to Barneys to scoop up a pair of the new Loomstate for Barneys Green Reflection jeans. This brand-spanking-new style sits just above the natural waist, comes in a pared-down ’70s-inspired silhouette–and is made out of organic cotton. (What, you expect the uber-boutique that’s going all-out on the eco-friendly front to offer up toxic threads? Get with it.)

Joey Lauren Adams in Dazed & Confused
Now in honor of this high-waist season, I’d like to take a moment to pay homage to the quintessential ’70s film, Dazed & Confused. Me being an ’80s baby myself, the film defined my description of flower children–and I’m betting it did the same for more than a few of you. I spotted this cheesy-yet-captivating “Where are they now?” Dazed & Confused story online today. Take a quick flip-thru to indulge in some star-spangled nostalgia.

American Apparel’s “’70s roller skater”
If you’re as lazy on the Halloween-hoopla planning as I am, you may appreciate American Apparel’s fool-proof, one-stop-shopping online costume guide. This being American Apparel, you won’t find any cute kitten ears or trompe l’oeil t-shirts; instead the festive ensembles echo the brand’s signature hipster come-hither attitude. (And of course, the costume separates are available to buy on the online store.)

American Apparel’s “Hollywood Blvd. Streetwalker” costume
While the cheeky costumes are sure to cheer—especially those who have a costume party to go to and nothing to wear—was especially amused by the non-descript names given to each ensemble. What is obviously a reference to Julia Robert’s Best Role Ever is simply, inadequately titled Hollywood Blvd. Streetwalker. (Could it be that after its many controversies, AA is now prohibited from name dropping lest some VIP get sullied by association?)

American Apparel’s “80s Dancer”
Fortunately, if you’re between the age of, say, 7 and 60, the result of pop culture osmosis should allow you to fill in the blanks yourself. And if it can’t, chances are that a raging All Hallow’s Eve isn’t in your near future; better skip the costume, stay in, grab a few bags of Barbie-sized sweets and just call it a night now.

A Peter Miszuk snapshot as seen on Elle.com
Models are a special breed, even among the stranger, hipper-than-thou fashion set. They are placed on a high pedestal for a number of reasons, not least of which for their sense of style. During the various fashion weeks, many were photographed in their own clothes, darting around town in between shows or loitering backstage during the lengthy hair-and-makeup stages.
In these shots—the best of which can be viewed on Elle.com, FaceHunter, and The Sartorialist—it’s clear that even fresh-faced catwalkers have perfected the dishabille-meets-disinterested chic. The signature multi-layered look has stayed strong in the modeling crowd—mainly because the time required to assemble the ensemble is virtually nil—and likewise, the whole je ne sais que-aspect is just as tempting as when Kate Moss first pioneered the look during the early ‘90s. While the finesse is maddeningly impossible to duplicate, I thought I’d point a few model-approved styles should you want to duplicate their look:

Phillip Lim’s dress, on Net-A-Porter

Swell’s Tinted Shades

Rick Owen’s Leather Bomber on Net-A-Porter

Frye boot, on Nordstrom
