Poems & Pretty Dresses, Part II
Tower Of Light by Pablo Neruda
O tower of light, sad beauty
that magnified necklaces and statues in the sea,
Monique Lhuiller’s Resort/Holiday collection
calcareous eye, insignia of the vast waters, cry
of the mourning petrel, tooth of the sea, wife
of the Oceanian wind, O separate rose
from the long stem of the trampled bush
that the depths, converted into archipelago,
O natural star, green diadem,
alone in your lonesome dynasty,
still unattainable, elusive, desolate
like one drop, like one grape, like the sea.

Sonnet 44, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Beloved, thou hast brought me many flowers
Plucked in the garden, all the summer through
And winter, and it seemed as if they grew
In this close room, nor missed the sun and showers.
So, in the like name of that love of ours,
Take back these thoughts which here unfolded too,
And which on warm and cold days I withdrew
From my heart’s ground. Indeed, those beds and bowers
Be overgrown with bitter weeds and rue,
And wait thy weeding; yet here’s eglantine,
Here ’s ivy!—take them, as I used to do
Thy flowers, and keep them where they shall not pine.
Instruct thine eyes to keep their colors true,
And tell thy soul their roots are left in mine.

Everything Is Illuminated
Perhaps it’s because he was just recently featured in both the MOMA’s Color Chart exhibition and had his own solo show at Zwirner + Wirth, but artist Dan Flavin is having a moment–and the fashion world is contributing to his resurgence by paying homage to his oeuvre. The influence of the minimalist artist’s masterpieces–i.e. his distinctive fluorescent light works–can be seen across the current sartorial landscape, in realms both high….
…and low:
Of course, that fluorescent lights are becoming a popular fashion prop makes sense considering the rising “It”-factor of neon hues. (Only problem is, these colored lights aren’t exactly green, but that’s for another post—and blog.) But the irony is, that since Flavin’s novel approach (the artist broke onto the scene in the ‘60s, and passed away in 1996) was that he used commercially-available items as his medium…and now similar installations are being used to make commercial visuals seem more artistic.
Whether Flavin-esque bright lights will be a permanent fixture in the fashion world remains to be seen of course, but the artists works can be found at The DIA’s Dan Flavin Art Institute.

Trend-Spotting: Inflated Figures
With a recession hovering on the horizon, penny-pinching is trendy again, however being economical with space? Not so much: Spring magazines, shop windows, even runway shows were full of billowing mushroom-cloud dresses. This inflated silhouette—which comes thanks to the trend-setting Alber Elbaz at Lanvin—swallows its wearer whole, reducing the figure two limbs and a tiny pin-head. In wearing one of these filmy, imposing gowns, the gala-going girl becomes entirely swept up in fabric and high fashion. But considering the current landscape, who can blame us for wanting such a dreamy, encapsulating escape?

Sadly, I can not take credit for creating these artful wonders, nor can I crow about using my cool-hunting glasses to find them online. (That honor is reserved for the charming and insightful Susie at Stylebubble.) I can however, pile on the accolades for the French e-commerce site My Prestigium, for have the genius idea (and advanced Photoshopping skills) for these magazine-worthy spreads. Leave it to the Parisians to match up la mode with Impressionist greats: Who needs the Louvre when you can have a shopping spree and art history lesson all rolled into one?

And while we’re on the topic of touchy-feely fashion week moments…designers usually give shout-outs during their shows to their sponsors, collaborators, PR gurus and the like but none are as generous with their gratitude as Anna Sui. The designer included not one but two pages of thank-yous which included both bold-faced names to unknown talents alike:
Listmaker: Chris Benz & His Facebook Friends

Chris Benz at the Sartorialist Party
In the past few months, designer Chris Benz has been sweeping the fashion industry’s popularity contest. And really, what’s not to like? In addition to his fresh aesthetic–one which revolves around a insouciant, youthful sophistication–Benz boasts inimitable personal style, impressive Ebay sleuthing skills, and is the mastermind behind a highly inventive, witty blog. But perhaps the best testament to his Zeitgeist prowess is his Facebook profile which includes a very creative list of of likes and dislikes as well as 285 friends–and counting. Taking cues from the social and modern-minded Mr. Benz, we ask him NOT for his dinner party dream list, but who in history–fact or fiction–would make the best Facebook friends:
1. Carol Channing
2. Jacqueline Bouvier
3. Margot Tenenbaum
4. Jacques de Bascher de Beaumarchais
5. Suri Cruise
6. Carol Burnett
7. Colette
