Kimora Lee Simmons Hosts A Decade of Fashion

Kimora Lee Simmons and Djimon Hounsou

Who was one of the last to arrive at Kimora Lee Simmon’s Decade of Fashion party? Kimora, of course. As you know, fabulosity takes time. The minute she waltzed in, the energy in the room shifted. Reporters perked up and photographers had their cameras aimed and ready. She hit the red carpet like a pro, smiling and posing with hottie honey Djimon Hounsou. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that with all the presence she exudes on television, she’s even more striking and charismatic in person. The stylish glamazon had much to say…

GlamChic: What was the inspiration for your new line?

Kimora: Um, it’s a little Saharan Desert and disco. Disco in the desert. So, it was a neutral palette with pops of bright color. And it was sort of utilitarian pockets mixed with asymmetrical necklines and wide legs and high waists and big chunky jewelry. So it was very disco-ish. Great bags, great accessories.

GlamChic: What are your plans now that it’s over?

Kimora: I’m going to my dinner and after party here at The Plaza.

GlamChic: Are you relieved now that it’s over or are suffering a little Postpartum Depression?

Kimora: Well, Postpartum Depression is like when you’re sad and out of your mind and don’t know what’s going on. I’m in high ecstasy mode…high, happy, and ecstatic. I’m relieved it’s over but not depressed at all. It went really well. It was a great crowd. My honey was there, Carmelo Anthony was there, André Leon Talley was there. Serena Williams was there waiting for me. And I saw her at the U.S. Open, and I’m so proud of her. We’re going to party and have a good time tonight.

GlamChic: How do you stay down to earth with all the glitz and glam surrounding you?

Kimora: I am really down to earth. A lot of people don’t know that about me. I am very down to earth which means I will curse you out and love you equally. I’m from Saint Louis, Missouri. It’s like no airs about me. And anyone who knows me knows that’s true, and if you don’t know me, you think “Oh my god, she’s this and she’s that.” But you don’t know me. If you know me, I’m a good mother, I’m very down to earth. I keep it real. I keep it moving, hunny, which is why I’m a fashion staple. If you can’t keep it moving, it’s no good.

GlamChic: Speaking of motherhood, are you planning on having more children in the future?

Kimora: I would love to. I practice every day.

Costume Institute Gala Highlights

There was a lot of sartorial splendor to be found at last night’s Costume Institute gala, most of it the kind of stuff only seen at the Oscars, society weddings, and other fantastical events. (Fitting reference eh? The A-list festivities were in honor of the new Costume Institute exhibition: Superheroes: Fiction & Fantasy, but more on that later.)  Highlights of the evening–including Hilary Duff posing as Fergie’s arm-candy and Victoria Beckham looking skinnier, scowl-ier, and more fabulous than ever–can be found on the Glam mothership but I thought I’d take a moment to point out this lovely little style snapshot:

And the Oscars Award Goes to…

heidi klum oscars academy awards dior dress red

Miss Project Runway herself, Heidi Klum wins the both the Early Bird Award and First Designer Dress Sighting Award at tonight’s Oscars ceremonies.  Gilded with rose-gold and diamond jewels she designed for Mouawad, and clad in a John Galliano dress for the Red Dress: Heart Disease Awareness effort, Klum was officially the first head-turner of Hollywood’s biggest night. (Sorry, Mary Hart. That lemon-colored look you’re sporting just doesn’t come close to Klum’s crimson number.)

Katherine Heigl’s Nerdy Make-Over

katherine heigl 27 dresses

Katherine Heigl

Not one to waste time when a new trend is afoot, Katherine Heigl got a jump start on Fall ’08s matron chic. At a 27 Dresses photo-call yesterday in Madrid, Spain, the actress wore a trench-pencil-skirt-hair-pouf combo which bore a strong resemblance the smarty-pants styles Michael Kors’ models wore on his runway last week. But instead of Buddy Holly-worthy glasses Heigl set off her nerdy look by posing as if she were a 1950s Sears catalog mannequin. Way to go Method, Katy, way to go!

An Ode to TV’s Best Blonde & Brunette

mischa barton rachel bilson
Barton wears Chanel at the Viper Awards in Berlin, while Bilson poses in Lucky’s March issue

Betty and Veronica. Brenda and Kelly. Serena and Blair. The small screen has long been populated with blonde & brunette dream duos. But for those of us of a certain age (read: 16-30) and temperament (i.e. pop-culture vultures) we’ll always have a special place in our hearts for Summer and Marissa, the girls who pioneered shows that revolve around label-dropping and the luxe-life. Before these two, nary a Stam bag or Chanel 2.5 had ever graced the silver screen before. (And, to calm uproarious Sex & the City fans, let’s remember that HBO doesn’t really count as basic TV.)

While the actors behind these TV icons–Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson—may distance themselves from their O.C. characters, their attempts will most likely be futile. After all, has Audrey Hepburn ever stopped being synonymous with The Little Black Dress? Can you recall any other garment that Mary Tyler Moore ever wore other than a polyester pantsuit? If I say Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, don’t high-waist denim minis, Keds, and two-layer neon tube socks immediately come to mind? In this month’s Lucky, cover-girl Bilson says, “I’m definitely grateful for my role as Summer, but I must admit that I’m looking forward to becoming more than Summer.” While that makes for a great magazine pull quote, Bilson should take cues from her former co-star Barton sit back, borrow a few killer threads, and enjoy her membership in the Fashion Hall of Fame.

While You Were Sleeping…

…the cool kids partied at Gucci’s gigantic Unicef fundraiser at the United Nations–a locale which had surely never looked so stylish. Madonna and fam headlined the event while Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Salma Hayek, among many others, all turned out for the event, which included a performance by Rihanna. More could be said about the high-profile affair, but when inspecting the VIP wardrobe choices is the first priority, why waste words? Gaze on below:

The Best-Dressed Crowd Goes for Conservative Chic

marion coitillard nina ricci sheath

Golden Globe winner Marion Cotillard at the Critic’s Choice awards in a chic Nina Ricci sheath

Blame it on the fact that the writers strike has kept more than a few red carpets from being rolled out…OR that disaster dishabille has the trend pendulum swinging in the other direction…OR that the current recession has made bling seem a tad Marie Antoinette-y excessive, but conservative chic is back in a big way.

Instead of high-wattage accessories, jewel-tone gowns, and revealing cuts, many a flashbulb magnet and magazine covergirl has opted for the subtle, fuss-free route when navigating the current sartorial scene. Best-dressed all-stars including Golden Globe winner Marion Cotillard, the worshipable Christy Turlington, and the inimitable Ashley Olsen have all donned simple, noir separates at recent high-profile events. Even Beyonce—she of the mercury-colored gowns and diamante jeans—made waves this weekend in Milan when she turned up at Giorgio Armani’s men’s show clad in a simple black dress, leather jacket, and newly-darkened chestnut mane. Whatever the reason behind this burgeoning trend, it seems that glittery spectacles (be they ensembles or events) may just be a thing of the past.

Johnny Depp = Hollywood Golden Boy

johnny depp tux red carpet
The suave Mr. Depp at the 2007 Venice Film Festival

This just in: Johnny Depp scored a Golden Globe for his starring hair-all-akilter performance in Sweeney Todd. However underwhelming the accolade may be (considering the circumstance) the trophy serves as an appropriate time to remind readers that Depp has long ruled another one of Tinseltown’s ruthless competitions: Hollywood’s best-dressed list. For a refresher course on Depp’s excellent taste in garb (and girls) check this out.
