Spend or Save? Marc or Forever 21?

Want the look but short on cash? Look for bargain items that reflect the feel of a higher end piece. We love this Marc by Marc Jacobs Habotai Ruffle-Front Dress (available at Net-A-Porter.com), but it costs $360. The Forever 21 Ruffle Woven Wrap Dress (available at Forever21.com for $27.80) isn’t an exact replica (which we think is a good thing), but it has the elements—the ruffles and the waist tie—that make the Marc dress so chic.

What a (Stylish) Stud!

Sometimes the perfect thing to complete an outfit is a little hardware, and we love how versatile studs have become. We think they can add just the right amount of dimension to a basic outfit. And they’re not just for rockers—even the ultimate girly-girl can find pieces to compliment a lace-and-florals-based look. In fact, we’re thinking ruffles and studs might be a match made in fashion heaven.

Fly Away With Me?

When we first saw the D&G butterfly blouse and skirt (#3 below), a few things immediately came to mind. Summer garden parties, picnics in the park, and Alexander McQueen’s incredible Spring 2008 tribute to Isabella Blow. We love that the motif has emerged from its previous place alongside hearts and rainbows to become an elegant embellishment on clothes and accessories. We think our favorites below show that butterflies aren’t just for little girls anymore.

Ask GlamChic: Beach Daze

Excited for the party but not sure what to wear? Can’t decide on a dress for that upcoming wedding? Confused about what business casual actually means? Stop your worrying—GlamChic is here to help you out! We’re all set to bring you weekly installments of outfit tips and suggestions based on what you want to know.

________________________

askglamchic1This week, Ask GlamChic is dishing out advice for beachwear. The concept is simple—swimsuit, cover-up, and go—but we’ve got suggestions that’ll make you extra stylish as you frolic in the sand. Tired of the same old baggy cover-up? Revamp your summer beach wardrobe with our tips!

beachday

1. Retro Stripe Bikini ($50 at Topshop.com). This part’s a given. If you’re going to the beach, you need a swimsuit, whether you’re lying out in the sand or diving straight into the water. We like this bikini, since it plays into this summer’s widespread nautical trend.

2. Sheer Button Down Shirt ($240 at LaGarconne.com). Instead of the standard, loose dress-shaped cover-up, why not try a cute button-down shirt? This one is chic and elegant, but still fun since it’s a little sheer. And if you leave the last few buttons undone, you can transform your look by creating a tied-up blouse.

3. AE Cutoff Denim Shorty Shorts ($34.50 at AE.com). Play with the classic white-shirt-with-jeans look by pairing your top with a pair of denim cutoffs. The worn look of these shorts will keep your outfit from looking too done-up for the beach.

4. Straw Bucket Bag ($34 at Newport-News.com). Nothing says beach day like a big straw tote filled with goodies—books, magazines, snacks, a towel, sunscreen, and whatever else you need. We love this bag because it’s roomy enough for all our stuff and it has a nice nautical feel to it.

5. Women’s Printed Flip Flops ($5 at OldNavy.com). We don’t recommend wearing super-expensive shoes to the beach, because we don’t want your prized sandals getting wet and sandy. But inexpensive can obviously still be really cute, just like these colorful plaid flip-flops. Pretty and practical.

Step Into the Harem

harempants

Get with the program- everyone in Europe has already been wearing them! You might feel like you’ve stepped out of a scene from Aladdin, but that only means you’re sporting the hottest look around. Harem pants can be tricky, but almost every designer has a pair out there–and if worn correctly, you’ll have everyone staring in envy. If you thought harem pants/gypsy pants/pajama bottoms, whatever you choose to call them, were only suitable for tall skinny-minnies, you’re mistaken! No matter what your height, throw ‘em on with a simple, tighter tank top and high, chunky heel… and you’ll be oh so fashionable. And if you’re jetting off to  Europe any time soon, you’ll fit right in! ~Ashley Grossman

Plaid Fad

In our minds, plaid shorts are a perfect casual summer staple. We can imagine wearing them to the beach with a tank and flip-flops for a day at the beach (over a swimsuit, of course), then moving on to a nice evening BBQ. You can go for as much or as little color in the pattern as you like, but we personally prefer the brights for extra summer pop.

Ask GlamChic: Finicky Weather Blues

Excited for the party but not sure what to wear? Can’t decide on a dress for that upcoming wedding? Confused about what business casual actually means? Stop your worrying—GlamChic is here to help you out! We’re all set to bring you weekly installments of outfit tips and suggestions based on what you want to know.

askglamchicFor our very first installment of Ask GlamChic, we’re tackling problematic weather. We’ve been talking about summer, vacation, and amazing weather quite a bit recently, but reality can be a little harsh. So what do you do when you’re getting doused with rain instead of bathing in the sun? We’ve got an outfit and a few pointers on hand.

finickysummerweather

1. A.P.C. Madras Lurex cheesecloth Dress ($120 at LaGarconne.com). Even if—or maybe especially when—it’s a little dreary outside, we love to bring some bright summer color into our outfits. We also like the idea of a dress, since the very idea of soggy pant legs makes us cringe.

2. Oversized Blazer (available in Zara stores). Since it is summer, we don’t think you need a real coat—just something to ward off any morning or nighttime chills. Plus, since this blazer is affordable, we wouldn’t mind as much if it got a little wet from the rain.

3. Humanoid Short Heel Boot ($395.50 at LaGarconne.com). We think shoes are the hardest things to choose when it comes to unpredictable weather. Rain boots are a natural choice, but they can be heavy and clunky—and you’re feet can get a little toasty. We’ve chosen a nice ankle boot instead, to keep the water out without smothering your legs. If you choose leather boots, though, make sure they’re properly protected. (We like Aldo’s Defense Protector Spray, available at AldoShoes.com for $9.99.)

4. Leather & Canvas Tote ($32.80 at Forever21.com). A big tote with a zipper is ideal for keeping your important possessions dry. We like the idea of a light-colored bag for the summer months—and again, an affordable one to use in case it gets wet.

5. Star by JulienMacdonald Gold Glitter Leopard Umbrella (approximately $25 at Debenhams.com). A light, compact (and, of course, cute) umbrella is your best friend when you’re experiencing on-again-off-again rain. Remember to choose one that fits in your bag—and make sure it’s sturdy, too!

Knots for Nautical

knotsfornautical

We’re kind of obsessed with the nautical trend, especially when it’s done subtly enough to escape that costume-y feeling. Lucky for us, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon—Chanel’s Resort 2010 had some distinctly nautical pieces, but we traced the trend back to Spring 2009, and even further back to last year’s resort collections. And even though “nautical” usually brings stripes and anchors to mind, we think it’s actually a pretty versatile trend, ranging from sophisticated to playful, and from hats to seashells to boat shoes —even a little rope accent on a belt can turn your outfit seaworthy!
