What is it about a little dollop of whipped cream on top of a dessert that makes it so appealing? It dresses up even the simplest fresh fruit or cake. But I always have the same problem when it comes to whipping cream. I only need a little bit to garnish a dessert but I end up buying at least a half pint container and throwing at least some of it away. For the occasional use, nothing beats fresh whipped cream and no fake cream will do.
Having whipped cream on hand enables you to make fun snacks like this one developed by pastry chef Gale Gand. It’s a colorful layering of strawberry jam, pineapple chunks and mandarin oranges topped with whipped cream - good for snacking or dessert using nothing more than pantry staples.
Pineapple Cornucopia
Makes: 5 servings
5 teaspoons seedless strawberry jam
10 slices of fresh pineapple or 1 can (20 oz ) pineapple slices packed in juice, drained
Whipped cream
1/2 can (11 oz ) mandarin oranges, drained
Spread 1 teaspoon strawberry jam in the bottom of five 4-ounce custard cups. Cut each pineapple slice into 5 sections.
Place pineapple slices around the bottom of each cup. Add a serving of whipped cream in the center. Tuck 5 mandarin oranges in a pinwheel around edge of the whipped cream. Serve immediately.
For convenience sake, you can’t beat a product like Reddi-wip, which unlike some brands is actually made with real cream. The packaging allows you to keep it fresh in the fridge much longer and only use what you need. No more tossing out half used pints of whipping cream!
To win one of three fabulous prize packages sponsored by Reddi-wip, just leave a comment with your favorite way of using whipped cream. It could be with fruit, cake, cookies, ice cream– anything (PG rated) goes!
- 1 signed copy of Gale Gand’s Short & Sweet:Quick Desserts with Eight Ingredients or Less
- 12 Reddi-wip free coupons
- 2 Reddi-wip branded bowls
- 1 red silicone muffin pan
Each prize package is worth $100. Leave you comment today to win!

To be quite frank and quite disgusting, there’s nothing like eating whipped cream right off the spoon. Why spoil it with all of that other business?

Whipped cream made with brown sugar is the best on just about everything, especially whole wheat waffles and fresh strawberries.

The grown-up me says on top of a sinful dark chocolate mousse.
The kid in me says getting up in the middle of the night intending on getting a warm glass of milk to go back to bed. Only to open the fridge, spot the can, pop the lid and squirt it in my mouth.

My hubby makes pumpkin pie (and roasted pumpkin seeds) from scratch every Thanksgiving, and he would kill us if we even mention the words Cool Whip. Nothing but pure 100% straight from the can whipped cream is allowed to grace the top of his pie!!! or else!

although it’s totally unoriginal, i’ll take my whipped cream on some strawberry shortcake. an acceptable alternative (or partner, depending on my level of fat depletion…) would be on top of a white chocolate mocha.

Whipped cream in a can was a popular Christmas stocking stuffer when I was a kid, because it was considered a major treat item by my crunchy granola mother. It was a race to see who could pop the top off and get it into their mouth first. Nowadays, we are a little more civilized in our whip cream consumption and eat it on ice cream or on my mother’s favorite banana chocolate pie.

Heh, why dirty a spoon? Straight from the nozzle is good for me!! (Otherwise, topping hot chocolate comes in close second!)

Super cool! I love to masserate strawberries (just add a tad bit of sugar, shake in a tupperware container and set it fridge for 24 hours) and add whipped cream on top and eat as is! Yum! I’ve eaten that for the past three days! It’s a great way to use up berries that might be getting a bit old because they plump right back up!

For a children’s birthday party treat, top unfrosted individual cupcakes with Reddi-wip. Then allow each little guest to decorate his or her own cake with a variety of sprinkles, jimmies, raisins, berries, colored sugars, granola, flaked coconut, and a cherry to top it all off. Have your camera ready!!

Whipped cream on homemade still-warm chocolate pudding. Or, strawberries on homemade baking powder biscuits. Or, caffe mocha. Or, fresh raspberries just picked from the garden. Or, on top of fresh gingerbread with lemon sauce. Or, dang now I want some;-)
