The Atlantis

The Atlantis

I just found a great resource for families looking for a little help with their travel planning. It’s called WeJustGotBack.com, and the site is jam-packed with everything from editor’s picks, insider guides to popular family destinations, reviews of kid-friendly hotels, travel tips and more.

Many families will be sending their kids back to school in just days, but for those with kids who are preschool age, next month just might be the time to travel, according to WeJustGotBack.com.

In “September Vacation Deals for Families with Preschoolers,” the site details five great deals at such big-name resorts as the Atlantis in the Bahamas, the popular all-inclusive Beaches Resorts and Orlando’s Nickelodeon Hotel. Families with kids under five can save money on discounted rooms, free meals for the little ones, and fun activities.

For instance, September is “Nick Jr.” month at the Nickelodeon Hotel, meaning that a kids’ suite costs half as much as it does during the peak summer season, and the third night is free.

To read about all of the special September travel packages, visit www.wejustgotback.com.

Gansevoort South

Having been to the ultra-posh (and ultra pricey) rooftop bar at the Hotel Gansevoort in New York City’s Meatpacking District, I was interested to read that they recently opened a new property in South Beach, the Gansevoort South.

Not only does the property look pretty sweet with its modern lines and gorgeous amenities (just check out the pics of the pool and the roof deck), but they’re offering a Girls’ Escape package that makes it even more enticing.

Gansevoort South Roof Deck

Starting at $395, the package offers deluxe room or suite accommodations, continental breakfast for two, VIP access and two cocktails at Plunge rooftop lounge, two VIP passes to Privé, Mansion or the Opium Garden, poolside yoga classes, and more.

Gansevoort South Guest Room

Not too shabby. Of course, in terms of lounging options, guests all have access to the hotel’s beach club, designed by Nikki Beach’s Stephane Dupoux. Oversize beds, cabanas and more are available for rental. There’s also a main infinity pool at the hotel that overlooks the beach.

Plunge, the hotel’s roof deck that sits 18 stories above ground, is adults-only (which means no kiddies splashing in the pool) and has a 110-foot long pool on a palm tree-fringed deck. Come nightfall, it turns into a lounge.

Pool, rooftop lounge, nightlife. Do I hear bachelorette party, anyone?

To learn more about the Gansevoort South and its special packages, visit www.gansevoortsouth.com.

beachhousebeach.jpg

A longtime playground for European travelers, the Maldives has begun to garner attention by Americans, as well, thanks to celebrities like Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Madonna, and Penelope Cruz putting it on the radar. A nation consisting of 1,192 islands situated due south of India, the Maldives isn’t the easiest spot to travel to from the United States, but if you have the time (and money), it’s worth every minute (and penny) spent en route.

When to Go: Thanks to its equatorial climate, anytime of year is fair game in the Maldives. Days are longest from December to April, but prices are higher over holiday periods (obviously). May through November is the official low season due to tropical storms and extreme humidity, but if you don’t mind frizzy hair and the occasional rain shower, you might be better to go then (less people and lower prices make for a more enjoyable vacation for you!).

Where to Stay: You’ll immediately feel like you’ve landed in a tropical heaven as you’re led to your private villa at the Beach House at Manafaru’s, with its sandy paths lined with 700 banana and mango trees (located in the northern atoll of Haa Alif).

beachhouserow.jpg

Upon arrival, you’ll spot a single wooden jetty that juts out into the vast Indian Ocean and a handful of staffers making their way to its end to greet you with a warm smile and glass of refreshing ginger-and-honey concoction in coconut shell.

Women in traditional Maldivian garments adorn you with fresh-flower leis, as the general manager Philippe, an attractive, deeply-tanned Frenchman, and his charming, equally-attractive Uzbeki wife, Veronica, proffer welcoming hands. In the distance, faintly lit, grass-topped huts dance atop the placid waters.

Once you’re escorted to your beachside villa – you needn’t check in upon arrival, that’s conveniently taken care of when your butler meets you at Malé International Airport prior to transferring to your domestic flight – the only sounds in the distance are the gentle waters lapping over the white-gold sands and the occasional breeze whipping against the enormous banana leaves that decorate your private back garden. The resident lizard extends its curious head to survey your intentions, but you’re already too well immersed in your lava-rock-bottomed pool to notice. Welcome to paradise; you’re home at last.

Here you’ll find sixty-eight waterfront villas, each with its own terrace and fiber-optic-lit pool, are for rent on four price levels.

A lavishly appointed room

The ultimate splurge is the Grand Beach Pavillion, a palatial duplex with a sauna, Jacuzzi and steam room. But all bungalows are bedecked with a fiber optic-lit Infiniti pool, iPod connector, open-air rain shower, old-fashioned soaking tub, wireless Internet access, flat screen TV, and shaded sala (think gazebo), in which guests can receive private spa treatments. Added luxuries include pillow and soap menus.

beachhouse2-445.jpg
Rooms come complete with decks and ladders to the ocean

What to Eat: The island’s modern Asian-influenced continental fare can be explored at any of the island’s three restaurants – or even from the convenience of your villa’s own backyard if you prefer a more intimate meal. The resort’s signature dining experience Saffron offers the tastiest of Asian-fusion cuisine in a stylish and romantic setting perfect for those honeymooning or needing a break from the kids, while Medium Rare (obviously) caters to meat lovers with its mouth-watering steaks and lobsters drawn directly from the eatery’s central pond. Four Corners is ideal for the indecisive diner like myself: With a full buffet of food from all over the world, you can sample a little of everything, including comfort food from your own country should homesickness strike.

What to Do: The Maldives boasts some of the most crystal clear, unpolluted water on the planet. Even if you weren’t previously a diver, you should take this opportunity to complete your open water SCUBA certification at the island’s PADI center. If you’re not confident enough to take the full-on plunge just yet, test the waters with a little snorkeling first. Or book a boat trip to one of the nearby local islands and get a feel for what life is really like for the natives. (Spoiler Alert: It involves much dancing and drumming demonstrations.)

If active endeavors aren’t your thing, you’ll enjoy taking advantage of the Jungle Spa (the Chocolate Extravaganza is to die for), lounging in the Amazon Pool (complete with submerged benches), or making use of the resort’s many offerings, like the karaoke lounge or golf simulator.

Out the Door Spring Rolls

Spring rolls from Out the Door

Farm-fresh ingredients. Seasonal California cuisine. Celebrity chefs with serious star power. San Francisco is known for its fabulous food—but it often comes with a price.

Luckily for visitors, many of the city’s well-known chefs have opened less expensive outposts of their original blockbuster restaurants, so you can enjoy gourmet food at a fraction of the price.

The latest of the bunch comes from chef Dennis Leary, known for his incredible California cuisine at the shoe box-sized Canteen. People are buzzing about his latest venture called The Sentinel, a no-frills spot serving soup and sandwiches at lunchtime that he recently opened. Simple favorites, such as a brisket sandwich and roast pork loin with figs and sweet onions, star on the Leary’s homey menu. (37 New Montgomery St., 415-284-9960)

Leary isn’t the only chef who’s experimented with less-expensive (but just as delicious) fare. Here are some other options for visitors who want to experience the city’s finest food for less:

Charles Phan/The Slanted Door—Ever since it moved into the Ferry Building, Phan’s Slanted Door has become one of the most sought-after reservations in town. Check out one of two outposts of Out the Door, which serve some of Phan’s classics in a more casual setting. Fresh spring rolls, noodles and a refreshing grapefruit and jicama salad are just some of the options. (Ferry Building & Westfield Shopping Centre food court; 415-861-8032 and 415-541-9933)

Elizabeth Falkner/Citizen Cake—Falkner is known for her decadent desserts at Citizen Cake. If you’re sightseeing in the Union Square area, you can head to the top of the Virgin Megastore to sample some of her addictive cookies and cupcakes at Citizen Cupcake. (2 Stockton St., 415-399-1565)

Traci des Jardins/Jardiniere—Jardiniere, which serves elegant California fare, is a favorite for pre- and post-opera and symphony outings. James Beard award-winning chef des Jardins opened an authentic taqueria in the Ferry Building called Mijita, so if you’re checking out the organic produce and artisanal food stores, swing in for a taco or two. (1 Ferry Building, 415-399-0814)

If you’re visiting San Francisco and looking for dining deals, it’s also helpful to check the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau for special offers and coupons, which you can do by clicking here.

Mandarian Oriental Miami

Mandarin Oriental Miami

A typical concierge might be able to score you good dinner reservations or tickets to a sold-out show, route your sightseeing destinations on a map and offer good general advice.

There are certain cities where nightlife is just as much an attraction as the typical sightseeing fare. New York, London, Las Vegas and Paris come to mind—as does the chic, see-and-be-seen hotel scene in Miami. More often than not, though, it’s tough to get past the red velvet rope into South Beach’s coveted hotel bars, like the impossibly hip (and sometimes impossible to get into) Delano.

Not one, but two local hotels have launched a new concept that sounds pretty cool, if you’d like to live and party like a rock star while you’re in town: the nightlife concierge.

The Mandarin Oriental, Miami has launched two new packages, Miami Nights and Ultimate Miami Nights, that, along with accommodations, spa services and the like, feature the services of a personal nightlife guide who can help guests tailor their nights out at VIP venues.

The Four Seasons Miami has a dedicated nightlife concierge who will help you get into your club of choice, as well as help you with selecting the right clothes for the evening with the help of the personal styling section at Neiman Marcus.

So go on, indulge. That’s what visiting cities like Miami is for, isn’t it?

Calisotoga Bike Shop

Calistoga Bike Shop’s Cool Wine Tour, Calistoga, CA

With the rising costs of travel and gas, we’ve already written about gas rebates, new airline charges, and the current trend of “staycations.”

If you’re dying to get away for the weekend, but don’t want to shell out a wad of cash for a flight, you may want to check out the New York Times‘ new interactive feature on “One Tank Trips.” They profile more than 50 round-trip adventures you can take on just one tank of gas (yes, you heard us correctly) from New York City, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Each destination is only about 150 miles away from the origin city.

What’s so great about the story? No matter what you have in mind—a weekend with the kids, a girls’ weekend, a romantic getaway—there’s a little bit of something for everyone. And since you’ll only be using one tank of gas, you can rest assured that you’ll have plenty of money left over to spend on the rest of your trip.

Here are just some ideas for those lucky to dwell in the featured cities:

New York City: a 19th century lighthouse bed-and-breakfast in Saugerties, gallery-hopping in New Haven, the boardwalk in Point Pleasant, and the chic Lodge at Woodloch in the Poconos (pictured below)

Boston: strolling the trails in the Berkshires, hitting the clam shacks in Wellfleet, and book tours in Amherst

Los Angeles: doing Santa Barbara on the cheap at the Montecito Inn (pictured below), an art tour of Costa Mesa, seeing Mojave National Preserve

San Francisco: touring farms in Sonoma, hiking in Sutter Buttes, biking and more in Napa (from Calistoga Bike Shop, pictured at top of story)

Travel Journal

I don’t know about you, but I always have good intentions of journaling when I travel, or of creating a scrapbook when I get home with all of my ticket stubs, pamphlets, a few leftover bills, etc. More often than not, I get completely disorganized about it, then end up just tossing everything away when I get home.

This eco-friendly travel journal from UK designers Sukie, made on one hundred percent recycled paper, isn’t just inspiring (I love the retro cover), but what’s great about it is that it’s got pockets to save all of your scraps of paper and odds and ends.

Travel Journal

Plus, it’s just a whole lot more fun than most boring old leather-bound travel journals (not that those aren’t pretty, but this really stands out).

Available for $15.89 at Delight.com.

Iron Horse Hotel

Yes, you read that correctly. The new Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee, set to open in September, is a luxury hotel geared towards both business travelers and motorcycle enthusiasts (because, in a sense, they’re both “road warriors”).

How would a hotel cater to motorcycle enthusiasts, you ask? Well, the rooms feature custom hooks for hanging heavy leathers, as well as a bench for removing and storing boots and helmets. Downstairs, covered parking for motorcycles is available, with rag bins and check in carts, so that riders can easily transport materials up to their room.

Special packages, including packed lunches and ride routes, will be available, as will rejuvenating spa services geared towards riders. And did we mention that the hotel is located near to the city’s new Harley-Davidson Museum?

Located in a 100 year-old warehouse, the urban boutique hotel features 100 loft-style guest rooms, done up in modern-chic furniture and fabrics, as well as two top-floor, two-level suites. All of the rooms offer wireless internet, luxury linens and flat-screen TVs.

For more information on the Iron Horse Hotel, visit www.theironhorsehotel.com.
