New York Fashion Week February 2008 - Interview with Lauren of Second City Style

nyfw-secondcitystyle.jpg

Carol and Lauren of Second City Style

Second City Style’s coverage of February 2008’s New York Fashion Week was Fabulous! We wanted to catch up with Lauren to see what shes been up to…

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

Let’s see, I’m originally from Lewiston, NY which is near Niagara Falls. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in (which I love). I have been in love with clothes and fashion ever since I can remember. My favorite book as a little girl was “Ann Likes Red” which was about a red dress and a little girl’s obsession with the color red. I have not looked back since, even though I love many more colors now. I originally wanted to be a fashion designer, but could not draw the ideas in my head so I went to school for merchandising. Then I switched schools and degrees. I received my MBA with a concentration in marketing from Johns Hopkins University and spent years in marketing and then in technology marketing. However, I missed fashion and writing so I came back full circle. Carol Calacci and I launched Second City Style 2.5 years ago because we saw a need in Chicago. We were pretty short sided about the power and reach of the Internet though and are thrilled our site reaches much further than just the Midwest. Last May I married my New York City born and raised (and never leaving) husband and left the Windy City for the Big Apple. Carol and most of our staff remain in Chicago.

Tell us about Second City Style and how it got to the level it is right now.

As I mentioned, Second City Style started as a weekly published online magazine which we thought would be mostly about shopping and fashion in Chicago. We now get about 2 million readers per month. Within a year we added our blog which is updated several times a day. About a year and a half ago we also opened Second City Store which is an online store that sells and promotes wares from Indie designers. Most are from Chicago, but we are opening that up as well. How did we get to this level? Dedication and our fab group of contributing editors and writers! They are so supportive and inspirational. We love them and our readers. We tailor our site from the feedback.

We’ve seen all the coverage you did of New York Fashion Week’s fashion shows. What were your favorite and why?

Hmmmm, that’s a tough one. We loved Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier, but we always do! No surprise there. Some other faves were Ports 1961, Y & Kei, Carmen Marc Valvo and Marc Jacobs. I am continually amazed that the shows
I look forward to are usually the disappointments and the ones I could care less about usually pleasantly surprise me. I just love that. It keeps it interesting. I’m just glad you didn’t ask which ones we hated!

Did you see any emerging trends at the shows? On the streets?

Feathers and fur are the two that come immediately to mind! You would never know we are headed for a recession with this fashion week! Thank God! Who needs to be reminded? However, there were so many trends it was ridiculous (chunky sweaters, bubble skirts, belts, sweaters with chiffon, etc.). One thing we noticed…. pretty much every designer had one jumpsuit. Ew. On the streets or if you mean in the tents, well when it’s cold and raining outside it’s all about the coat, bag and shoes. I am always astonished by the women who teeter in 5 inch heels on the stone and cement at the tents. God bless them. I tried it one day last fall. I nearly died :)

Did you attend any parties during fashion week?

I attended a few at the beginning and of course our own party we had with Papierdoll Magazine. We started a new series with them called “Meet the Designer.” It was packed and we had without a doubt, the BEST giftbag of all of Fashion Week! Then I sadly caught a death of a cold and missed any nightlife fun the last few days. I barely made the shows! I spent this past weekend home recovering. I’m feeling almost human now.

What’s next for Second City Style?

We are updating our e-zine and the store as we speak. We are also planning a Chicago event around the store and our designers this spring. Any excuse for me to get back to Chicago really. I miss it!

New York Fashion Week February 2008 - Interview with Kelly and Tina of The Bag Snob

nyfw-thebagsnob_01.JPG

You may already know these sassy girls from Bag Snob, but we wanted to highlight these rising stars and get to know a little bit more about the The Snob duo, Tina Chen Craig and Kelly Cook…

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

Kelly: I was born in Taiwan and moved to LA when I was 7. I went to the University of Southern California (where I met Tina). I worked in fashion, finance and technology. I am married (4 years) and have 2 daughters, 3 years old and 7 months old.

Tina: My name is Tina Chen Craig, I am from Taiwan and came to the US when I was 8 years old. I grew up on the east coast and moved to LA to attend USC- where I met Kelly. I am married (to David Craig - going on 7 years!) and have a three year old son.

Tell us about The Bag Snob and how it got to the level it is right now…

Tina: Bag Snob started as a hobby and a way for two best friends to stay connected and creative after having kids and leaving exciting careers in the fashion and entertainment industries. We had no idea how far it would take us. Visiting Oscar de la Renta’s showroom over fashion week was the highlight of our career! We are now sought after by media and designers, it’s really amazing. We of course appreciate all of the attention and hope to continue to grow the site, adding video and other components to it.

Kelly: We have had a crazy ride and did not expect this kind of success when we started. We just did what we loved and voila, here you have it. We have been extremely lucky to have gotten the support of so many people, including writers, editors and of course Glam.

Did you go to any of the shows during New York Fashion Week. What were your favorite and why?

Tina: Yes! We went to many shows, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, Ports 1961, Nanette Lepore, Diane von Furstenberg and several others… my favorite was Diane von Furstenberg and Vera Wang. They are my favorite female designers and both offer beautiful and wearable clothes

Kelly: Oscar de la Renta was the highlight by far. The President and Retail Director came up to us and wanted to give us a private meeting with Oscar himself and to view the bag line (and everything else, too) in their showroom. It was really amazing, but you can read all about it on Bag Snob.

Did you see any emerging trends at the shows? On the streets?

Tina: I loved the deconstructed coats. Ports showed a few with a cowl back, an unexpected element of a classic silhouette!

Kelly: I don’t think this season will go down as making history, everything seems to be continuing in the same direction, like colors (jewel tones) and silhouettes (flowing and not super constructed). I did love the overall hair for the week, it was soft and natural and very loose curls.

Did you attend any parties during fashion week?

Tina: I attended a few parties, most notably a private dinner thrown by Tamara Mellon of Jimmy Choo. Kelly left the week early so she missed out!

Kelly: No, other than meetings and shows, I just went home to rest for the next day.

Fashion Week is very hectic… So what’s next for The Bag Snob?

Kelly: We are planning to do web casts. It will be mini episodes of Bag Snob with various topics and themes. It will be a fantastic added feature that I’m sure people will be entertained by.

New York Fashion Week February 2008 - Interview with Karla Borders Pope of Brown Girl Gumbo

nyfw-browngirlgumbo_01.jpg

We got the chance to meet Karla Borders Pope from Brown Girl Gumbo at the Glam Writer’s Den event during New York Fashion Week.  She’s a new addition to the Glam Network and we’re so happy to have had the chance to get to know her.  Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I’m originally from Chicago, but I’ve lived in New York City for 5 years now. I moved to New York to pursue my dream of becoming a magazine editor. I have a background in writing and received my Bachelor’s degree in journalism. I got my start as an intern at the now defunct Honey magazine, I then went on to work at People magazine in the photo department for about a year. After that I landed a position with Parade magazine as an Associate Photo Editor. Now with my blog, I’m back to doing what I love — writing!

Tell us about Brown Girl Gumbo and why you decided to launch it…

Brown Girl Gumbo is a blog that stirs up everything that chic brown girls love! I decided to launch BGG because there were blogs for fashion, beauty, music, arts & entertainment, celebrities, but BGG is a one-stop shop. You can get it all at BGG — that’s why I call it Brown Girl “Gumbo” because it’s a mixture of everything. I’ve always had a passion for magazines so this is my outlet. Even though it’s called “Brown” Girl Gumbo, it’s really for any body who enjoys reading about fashion, beauty, health/fitness, celebrities, entertainment, etc., but since I’m a “brown” girl, I decided to call it that.

Were you able to catch any of the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week. What were your favorite and why?

Yes, I was able to attend a few of the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week. I actually enjoyed the great clothes that were shown by Brazilian designer, Iodice. I wasn’t familiar with his line, so it was great to see!

Did you attend any parties during fashion week?

I did attend a few parties, but I’m not exactly a party girl so I didn’t go to one every single night during Fashion Week.

What’s next for Brown Girl Gumbo?

I want to include more celebrity interviews as well as more movie and music reviews. I also want to start conducting giveaways and contests for my readers. In addition to more content, I’d also like to host a few promotional parties for BGG. By this time next year, I want everyone to know about it!

Thanks for chatting with us!

You’re more than welcome. The Glam event was so great! Thanks so much for inviting me.

New York Fashion Week February 2008 - Interview with Kristopher Dukes

nyfw-kristopherdukes.jpg

We caught up with Kristopher Dukes in New York during fashion week to see what she was up to and here’s what she had to say…

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

When most girls in LA were figuring how to become an extra on Saved by the Bell, I was figuring how to get paid to write. My elementary school scheming paid off — by age 15 I was contributing to local LA publications, and by 17 I was published nationally and received my first check (I think it barely paid for a soy latte). By 21, I’d been published in a bestselling book series, hand-picked to write for a public software company, and contributed to fashion bible WWD.

Tell us about Kristopher Dukes and how it got to where it is right now?

KRISTOPHER DUKES the dot-com, not the chick, started as my online portfolio. It morphed into a fashion blog a couple of years ago, and since has been featured in WWD, VOGUE.fr and mentioned in FORBES.com.

It took a lot of soy lattes.

How was your trip to New York during New York Fashion Week? Did you catch any shows while you were here?

It was lovely. I don’t really bother with the shows. They’re like adult Disneyland: too much wait for too little return.

Did you attend any parties during fashion week?

A party of two in my hotel room, with YouPorn.com.

So what’s next for Kristopher Dukes?

Landing a rich, first ex-husband.

Or further building my life of independence and freedom and making money stringing dirty words together.

Thanks for chatting with us!

Thank you. I like a lot of four-letter words, but “Glam” is really one of my favs.
