We got the chance to meet Karla Borders Pope from Brown Girl Gumbo at the Glam Writer’s Den event during New York Fashion Week.  She’s a new addition to the Glam Network and we’re so happy to have had the chance to get to know her.  Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I’m originally from Chicago, but I’ve lived in New York City for 5 years now. I moved to New York to pursue my dream of becoming a magazine editor. I have a background in writing and received my Bachelor’s degree in journalism. I got my start as an intern at the now defunct Honey magazine, I then went on to work at People magazine in the photo department for about a year. After that I landed a position with Parade magazine as an Associate Photo Editor. Now with my blog, I’m back to doing what I love — writing!

Tell us about Brown Girl Gumbo and why you decided to launch it…

Brown Girl Gumbo is a blog that stirs up everything that chic brown girls love! I decided to launch BGG because there were blogs for fashion, beauty, music, arts & entertainment, celebrities, but BGG is a one-stop shop. You can get it all at BGG — that’s why I call it Brown Girl “Gumbo” because it’s a mixture of everything. I’ve always had a passion for magazines so this is my outlet. Even though it’s called “Brown” Girl Gumbo, it’s really for any body who enjoys reading about fashion, beauty, health/fitness, celebrities, entertainment, etc., but since I’m a “brown” girl, I decided to call it that.

Were you able to catch any of the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week. What were your favorite and why?

Yes, I was able to attend a few of the fashion shows during New York Fashion Week. I actually enjoyed the great clothes that were shown by Brazilian designer, Iodice. I wasn’t familiar with his line, so it was great to see!

Did you attend any parties during fashion week?

I did attend a few parties, but I’m not exactly a party girl so I didn’t go to one every single night during Fashion Week.

What’s next for Brown Girl Gumbo?

I want to include more celebrity interviews as well as more movie and music reviews. I also want to start conducting giveaways and contests for my readers. In addition to more content, I’d also like to host a few promotional parties for BGG. By this time next year, I want everyone to know about it!

Thanks for chatting with us!
